(365 days + patience) - (pizza + tacos) = better + stronger

I started the Atkins diet one year ago, on 11 May 2012. I haven't had *miraculous* weight loss. My scale losses have always been quite modest but, over time, those modest losses have added up to a very satisfying total. I've made progress simply because I haven't quit.

11 September: 198 pounds (-8.5 pounds)

I honestly didn't expect to significantly reduce my bodyfat because I doubted myself. I doubted my ability to *deny* myself things I want. I was an extreme overeater before I started Atkins. Before I started the diet, my lunch on the two days per week that I met with students consisted of 4 baja beef chalupas and 4 volcano burritos, and sometimes also 4 crunchy taco supremes. One of my students told me that he liked my office because it always smelled like food... Dinner, at least 4 nights per week, consisted of an entire extra-large pizza plus a 14-piece order of chicken nuggets with 3 dipping sauces, and sometimes also crazy bread. This year, I learned to love myself enough to take good care of my body. Eating a massive volume of crappy food was killing me -- I couldn't walk more than half a block without being exhausted, I couldn't stand up for more than a few minutes at a time, I had chronic lower back pain, and I couldn't have run even if I was being chased by a homicidal maniac. On Atkins, I found out that I love myself enough to comfortably live without the food that was ruining my health.

I know that it's possible to reproduce pizza and tacos in a low-carb Atkins format but I honestly don't want those meals anymore. That food was poisoning me and I'm no longer willing to kill myself just to enjoy a few minutes of the fleeting pleasure of a craptastically tasty meal. I think I'm *allergic* to pizza and tacos -- they gave me 100 pounds of excess bodyfat and horrible lower back pain -- so I'll leave the joy of chalupas to other people. I'm not saying that I no longer enjoy food -- I genuinely enjoy my Atkins meals, like fresh tuna steaks in a homemade ginger and tamari dressing or flounder stuffed with crabmeat. So I definitely still enjoy tasty food! But I'm no longer willing to be drugged and weakened by what I eat. Not everyone who is carrying unwanted excess bodyfat has a *problem* with food, but I do. So the only way I can effectively heal my body -- and have any hope of maintaining my health -- is to change my relationship with what I eat and to accept the monumental importance of making different dietary choices.

Noticeable improvements in my life
  • I no longer suffer chronic lower back pain.
  • I can walk long distances without pain and/or exhaustion.
    - Which means I don't have to pay to take a taxi to and from the market because I can now comfortably walk 1.5 miles to the market and then walk 1.5 miles home while carrying my groceries.
  • I can comfortably stand for hours at department meetings and social events.
    - Which means I don't have to sit down and wait for colleagues and/or friends to gravitate over to me.
  • I can run across the street to beat a yellow light.
  • I have enough strength, stamina and flexibility to comfortably detangle my hair in the shower.
  • I can bend down and tie my shoes or fasten ankle-straps without feeling faint.
  • I can wear ankle-strap clogs or strappy sandals without having "cankle" bulges.
  • My arms and legs don't lose circulation when I sleep.
  • I can cross my legs.
  • I can zip boots up over my calves.
  • My (still chunky) calves finally fit into "skinny" jeans.
  • I can wear my smartphone holder on my bicep, instead of having to strap it around my forearm.
  • I can actually fit into items labeled "One Size Fits Most."
  • I can now put on a sports bra without strangling myself in the process.
  • I don't overflow my seat on the bus.
    - Which means I no longer have to sit smushed against some stranger.
  • I've lost fat from my fingers, wrists, and feet.
    - Which means I can wear shoe styles that I thought I would never wear again, and cherished bracelets and rings that my parents and grandparents gave me.
  • I have lost "face fat" and can once again see my bone structure.
    - Which means I now look like I'm actually related to the rest of my family.

I now eat substantially smaller portions, following Dr Atkins's instructions to "eat when hungry" and "eat until satisfied, not stuffed." Which is a lot easier now that I've taken the time to learn what "hunger" is -- as opposed to "boredom" or "celebration" or "social interaction" or "free pastries in the faculty lounge" or any of the other fifty thousand non-hunger reasons that I ate massive quantities of food. I stayed low-carb on my birthday, every holiday, during family gatherings and weddings, at every work event, trips to my favorite restaurants, and my aunts' "special" meals. I enjoy the fun, because my life is not about food when I'm out with colleagues (or friends or family) and I avoid the shared platters of cheese fries, nachos, and the stuff that people call "you've gotta try this." I've learned that I don't *have to* eat unless I'm hungry. And that being at a restaurant or at the movies isn't the same thing as being hungry. And I've realized that 50 other people will tell my aunts how awesome their homemade pasteles are, so they don't really need my feedback. And that I can just say "yeah, it was great" when colleagues ask if I tried the "incredible" pasta salad at an event because nobody will notice or care that I didn't actually eat any of it. I honestly don't have great willpower. I never learned how to deny myself things that I want. It's just that, right now, what I really want is to be strong and fit. Somehow, saying "no" to birthday cake feels like saying "yes" to things I want more.

I'm not yet at goal so this isn't a success story. And I can't predict the future so I can't definitively say that I will ever actually reach my fat loss goal. But I'm much better off than I was on this date last year -- no freakin' back pain -- which is AMAZING!

Notes
I have followed Dr Atkins New Diet Revolution (2002), staying on induction-level carbs of less than 20g per day for the first 9 months -- adhering to the guideline to eat no more than 2 cups of salad veggies plus 1 cup of "other" veggies per day. I moved up to the first rung of the ongoing weight loss ladder on the first Monday in March, sticking to the list of induction-approved veggies but measuring my veggie intake by a carb count of up to 25g per day rather than the 3-cup daily induction limit. And I moved up to the second rung of the ladder on the first Monday of May (this month), adding "fresh" cheeses. I weigh, measure, and log everything I eat as part of my accountability to the plan -- and accountability to the promises I made to myself when I started this program.

I weigh and measure my body once per month. My trainer, who weighs me and takes my measurements, rounds up to the nearest half pound and to the nearest quarter inch. My trainer is a childhood friend who is coaching me as a favor so he knows how obsessive I can be about "exactness," and rounding up keeps me from pulling my hair out about an ounce of weight or a millimeter of size.

BRAVO Trillex! Wow, what an inspiring read. I particularly LOVE this:

That's the ticket isn't it? My weight loss has been slow but sure, nothing miraculous either, but the way I'm doing my woe it hasn't been painful either. It's been DOABLE and sustainable. Even as the tortoise, if I DON'T QUIT, I'm going to cross the finish line looking quite different in 9 months too, which will be a year for me.

Seeing your pix just so motivates me. Congratulations girl!

Trillex, not many things make me tear up, but your fabulous story did just that. Thanks for being a great support for the rest of us here t LCF. You are a true inspiration. I pray that others look at your story and realize that they can do it too. It's not about losing a whole bunch of weight in a short period of time....it's a lifestyle change that will work if you stick with it. You make me wish I had done pics along the way.

Thank you for sharing so much about your journey. You are an example of someone who decided to make a lifestyle change to save your life! These points really struck a chord with me:

83 lbs in a year is fantastic! Stories like yours are so inspiring. This gives me hope that my 46" hips may be below 40" by the end of the year.

I nearly laughed out loud at the free-pastries-in-the-faculty-lounge comment. You have KILLED this weight loss and have worked your rear off. It shows physically, sure, but the most important component is your attitude shift over food. That is what enables long term success - when the mind is in the right place the behaviors WILL follow, be you have been a picture perfect example of that.

You look amazing, and I'm so glad your quality of life has improved substantially. Bravo!

I'm new to this board but WOW! I'm so inspired by your story. You are beautiful! The next time I'm tempted by all the goodies that people bring in to the faculty lounge (which is a daily struggle for me) I'm going to remember your post and be inspired to just say no.
