I think it's important to tell your doctor. There are several medications that ketogenic diets are not good to take with a ketogenic diet. Impossible to treat someone optimally if you ade hiding something. Several migraine And seizure medications should not be given if on a ketogenic diet and can be dangerous or not effective . Docs are pretty use to people lying about their habits and not following their advice but they are there to work WITH you and treat you to the best of their knowledge. You need to be your own advocate.

I've never met a doctor who knew much about nutrition (even those who claimed to know it all!). I can't imagine discussing it with one.

I definitely don't look for them to approve of how I eat any more than I'd look for approval from anyone else.

I adore my doctor. She thinks I'm a little nutty for how low-carb I am, but she's seen the results, so she supports me. She's also told other diabetic patients about what I do, so she's pretty open-minded about it.

The best thing about her is that any doctor she refers me to shares a similar open-mindedness, so I trust her referrals implicitly. I got lucky with her; she was already my doctor before I was dx'd with diabetes. Thank goodness!

Yup, my primary md is awesome. Very ope minded. Believes we are all different. He also encourages holistic along with traditional medicine. I am very lucky

WOE: low carbs

When I was diagnosed with Type 2, I asked my Dr how many carbs I could eat, and he said, "As few as possible", then said I COULD go to a local hospital and talk to a Diabetes Educator, and he made a face like biting into a bad apple. Since I already knew something about low carb eating, I just ran with what I knew.
On a later visit, my DR told me that Carbs are evil, and that he was eating low carb to loose a few pounds.
Now, if I could only get him to stop hounding me to take a statin...

My dr told me to add a tbsp flaxseed meal a day. The year I started, my cholesterol dropped by 20 pts.
