Starbucks, diet soda, and the like...

I have asked questions with regards to Atkins shakes, starbucks replacements, etc. I have tried duplicating my own Atkins frappaccinos with "some" success. History on Starbucks. I have had a Starbucks addiction (sugar + caffeine) since 2002. So that is about 13 years. I started drinking them when I worked part-time as a bank teller and going to SDSU. So I was gone all day and subsequently needed a pick-me-up. When I say addiction, I mean, I had it every day of my life up until now. Every city I've moved to, I check to see where a Starbucks is located. No joke. Every country I visit I have to check out their Starbucks, to see what they serve, and also just the novely of going to a Starbucks in a different location. I am also a diet-soda fanatic. I have about 3 a day. I am a school psychologist but even when I do observatations on the kids I am assessing, or when I am giving IQ tests I always have a starbucks in my hand. (even the kids/staff say something if i don't have one, like "where is your starbucks?)?
I am thinking that instead of trying to replicate starbucks drinks or finding alternatives to sipping on something artificial all day, I want to try not to sip on anything at all. And when I say I literally mean ALL DAY! Has anyone doing low carb for a while find that their need to ingest something sweet all day has diminished? Sometimes when I am out and about, I wonder why no one else has a starbucks in their hand, like THEY are the anomoly! LOL
I want to be at a point where I don't need any kind of rush, or pick me up at all and I can go about my day being normal!
Anyone else experience this and have succeeded in breaking their sweet-drink addiction? Also, any tips? much appreciated~

Yes. And, the solution is to stop drinking those types of things, and over time your cravings will go away. You can still enjoy black coffee or with a little cream/stevia, instead of those big Starbucks glorified milkshake "coffee" drinks. Diet soda really has nothing going for it so I would just make that a once a week thing.

If you can't go cold turkey start by drinking a glass of water every time you drink a soda or coffee. After a while you start to prefer water.

I did give up my beloved Diet Pepsi.... for a week. I didn't like doing it though, and it didn't affect my losses one way or the other, so, for me, I just go with it. I drink a full gallon of water each day, but I also drink diet pepsi throughout the day. That's just what works for me.

I spent 10 years drinking Starbucks and the last 3 drinking DD.
Same as you. All.the.time and people notice if I am not drinking an iced coffee from DD.

Last Wednesday I gave it up cold turkey. I still allow myself home made iced coffee since I control what is in it and I don't add mocha like I get at DD.
I still drink iced tea, but not from DD, because I can not go there without ordering a coffee.

I am drinking a ton more water and a ton less coffee and iced tea, and NO DD.
It is very hard, but I will get through it. You will too!

I drink diet soda. When I'm not on plan, I drink a ton of it. When I'm on plan, I still drink quite a bit, but my consumption goes way down.

This is how I manage to cut down to a reasonable amount. I drink a ton of water throughout the day. I don't measure it out, but it's probably at least a gallon. And every time I want to drink something else, I have a full glass of water first. If I still want it, I'll have it, but I don't use it to slake my thirst, I drink it for flavor. Lots of times, I don't bother with the soda after the water, but I do sometimes. I drink maybe eight cans of Diet Mountain Dew plus a couple of large fountain Diet Cokes per week now, when I was drinking probably thrice that before.

That's probably a ton to non soda drinkers, but it's a reasonable amount for me. And I don't deny myself when I get the urge.

I've gone months without soda or caffeine in the past, because my doctor and I were trying to figure some things out. So I know I could. But I like it, and I don't want to cut it out completely.

DD is Dunkin Donuts, which is so much better than Starbucks, but that's an east coast vs. west coast thing, I've found.

After ten years, I'm STILL annoyed that we don't have DD out here.

How do you feel about black coffee? You can still get a caffeine boost but without all the extra calories, carbs, and artificial sweeteners.

There is a plan for a whole bunch of DD franchises in southern california but they won't open for a while.

Even just the thought of Black Coffee makes me cringe It's the cream/milk/sugar/caffeine combos that I like.

What about using a sweetener and whipping your HWC? make a espresso con panna.(expresso drunk through a blob/layer of whipped cream)
The cream melts as you go and makes it sweet and creamy plus easy to make at home.

So ice it? I don't know if that would work.. You can also try an iced americano with heavy whipping cream and SF syrup if you must go to Starbucks. I love that place but avoid it if I can due to the money I save when I don't go. haha.. I love my iced americanos for sure!

I guess my issue is that I want to not drink it AT ALL. I want to get to a place where I don't crave/need it.

So how about decreasing the amount you have, or going cold turkey? Just like stopping eating junk foods- you just stop, or decide to eat less of them and fill the void with something else (water, herbal teas, etc). You can decide to have two a day for now and really enjoy them and take time to savor the flavor.

It's a habit like anything else, and you can break it.

My name is Sweet and I have a Starbucks addiction. I had to stop 1. for the cost, and 2. for the carbs. I now treat myself once a month to an iced sugarfree/ 1/2 and 1/2 for the milk, caramel machiatto. Grande. It's about 10 carbs.

In it's place I bought an espresso machine and make my own iced lattes at home. Stocked up on sugar free davinci's syrups and almond milk ( and good coffee beans) figured I could afford it all seeing how much I spent at Starbucks.

Sometimes I add a splash of 1/2 and 1/2 for extra creaminess. Or a dash of whipped cream on top

I also occasionally use some of my mom's homemade sf hot cocoa mix for a mocha, I am still trying to pry the recipe from her.

It works for me quite well and I am still losing weight.

I looked for a DD near my hotel when I booked a trip.

Honestly, cold turkey is hard. But I can't cut back. I just can't. Cold turkey is the only way I could do it. And I told every week for about 2 months that I was quitting it. Only when I posted it on FB and felt like I couldn't show up at work with one after that did I actually quit.
And I fell yesterday and got one. And they messed it up, which was a good thing...I didn't even drink it all. Only a few sips and decided it wasn't worth it.

SchoolPsych1979 you MUST be my sister from another mother. I too had/have a Starbucks addition. My drug of choice was a Iced Venti, White Mocha with extra whip and a flat lid, no domed. I was drinking two a day EVERYDAY. Can you say 1300 calories a day, in addition to whatever I ate late, late that night-usually some sort of restaurant food. Not to mention the $11.00 a day I spent on the drinks. I lived for the winter months so I could have a Venti Heavy whipping cream Eggnog Latte, extra hot, extra foam, extra nutmeg. I was soooo proud of my gold card status!

Since I found Starbucks in 2006, I have gained 75 pounds. For the most part, I attribute the gain to the sugar in my daily Starbucks drinks. I started drinking them when I was a Realtor and didn't have time to stop and eat. I reasoned it was harmless because after all it's espresso, right? I was working 12-16 hour days, living and working out of my car. So, I understand exactly where you are coming from.

I still have a daily Starbucks, but have transitioned to a Grande Iced, Sugar-free Caramel (or Vanilla) Americano in a Venti cup filled with ice, no water with Heavy Whipping Cream and a couple of drops of liquid sweetener. I still get to have my espresso, I get the caffeine pick me up and I have the sweetness I desire and it fits in with my WOE, now that's .

Omg! I get the same exact thing at Starbucks! Venti iced white mocha whipped cream with a flat lid. Ok that's too coincidental!

Get out of here!!!! I thought I was the only person that hated that dome lid. Liquid goes everywhere if you have to make a sudden stop while driving. I hadn't really noticed an after taste with the SF syrup when its mixed with the HWC. You wouldn't be the first to say that, one of the Barista's commented today that she doesn't know how I went from the White Mochas to the SF syrups so quickly. I will say the SF vanilla syrup tastes more like "real" sugared syrup than the caramel. Those are the only two flavors I use in my drink.

Ive been lobbying Starbucks for a SF white mocha syrup for the last two years. Maybe one day they will grant my wish.

I thank my lucky stars there's no DD out here. I have a horrible weakness for their donuts (chocolate glazed) and when I went back home to Boston a couple of years ago, they were what ended my 40 pound losing streak and it took me about a year and a half to pick myself up and dust myself off after that. I am so happy that there's nothing close out here.

I think cold turkey is the only way to go. You'll have a headache for a few days, but after that I doubt you'll even miss it much.

I'm currently indulging my starbucks addiction bc I'm studying for the bar (which I can only do outside of the house or else I will find any reason not to be studying) and starbucks is the only cafe in town that has HWC. I get one venti or treinta (depending on whether I feel like hot or cold) with SF mocha syrup and a splash of HWC, then I switch to unsweetened passion iced tea. But I think after the bar, I'll probably give it up. I also feel like it would be nice to not be addicted to anything.

Get out of here!!!! I thought I was the only person that hated that dome lid. Liquid goes everywhere if you have to make a sudden stop while driving. I hadn't really noticed an after taste with the SF syrup when its mixed with the HWC. You wouldn't be the first to say that, one of the Barista's commented today that she doesn't know how I went from the White Mochas to the SF syrups so quickly. I will say the SF vanilla syrup tastes more like "real" sugared syrup than the caramel. Those are the only two flavors I use in my drink.

Ive been lobbying Starbucks for a SF white mocha syrup for the last two years. Maybe one day they will grant my wish.
Haha I've been secretly wishing for sugar free white mocha too! Let me try the sf caramel Americano style. I'll report back.

I thank my lucky stars there's no DD out here. I have a horrible weakness for their donuts (chocolate glazed) and when I went back home to Boston a couple of years ago, they were what ended my 40 pound losing streak and it took me about a year and a half to pick myself up and dust myself off after that. I am so happy that there's nothing close out here.



I think cold turkey is the only way to go. You'll have a headache for a few days, but after that I doubt you'll even miss it much.

I'm currently indulging my starbucks addiction bc I'm studying for the bar (which I can only do outside of the house or else I will find any reason not to be studying) and starbucks is the only cafe in town that has HWC. I get one venti or treinta (depending on whether I feel like hot or cold) with SF mocha syrup and a splash of HWC, then I switch to unsweetened passion iced tea. But I think after the bar, I'll probably give it up. I also feel like it would be nice to not be addicted to anything.
For me the flat lid because I didn't want people judging my venti drink and then on top of that have them think, aaaand she needs whipped cream lol
Yes it would be nice to not be a slave to anything. I was also thinking of going the Teavana route.
