About Atkins---it's really sad...

For all the positive contributions that Dr. Atkins made in terms of weight loss and general health, so many people remain adamant that he died of a heart attack.

People love to tell you how the good doc "died in his own sins."

It's just a terrible shame.

Jannybunny 04-17-2013 01:33 PM

Educate them when they say that. I do

rubidoux 04-17-2013 01:41 PM

I agree. I think he is quite a hero.

I have watched a lot of Taubes videos on youtube and it is amazing to me how disrespectful interviewers and other interviewees can be to him bc of his message. And you can see him getting his hackles up more and more over time. It's hard to go against the grain (pun intended). :(

Demonica 04-17-2013 01:55 PM

I and DH are quick to correct people when they spout off that "died of a heart attack" garbage. And if they try to argue the fact, we just walk away. Let them think what they want. They're going to anyway.

reddarin 04-17-2013 02:02 PM

So far I haven't had anyone say anything like that to me about Atkins but I'd correct them in a heartbeat. And I'd ask them what they think about being told a lie about his death and does it bother them that they are being manipulated by people that think they know what is best for them.

mojocat 04-17-2013 02:18 PM

That wasn't only the horrible thing. I remember reading an interview by his wife and people spread gossip that he was obese when he died. However she said he had accumulated fluids and puffed up from being in a coma in hospital. Atkins will long be remembered, unlike the pathetic rumor mongers.

lilbeetle 04-17-2013 03:25 PM

For the unknowing... what did he die of?

mom2jjl 04-17-2013 03:32 PM

He fell and hit his head on ice and died as a result of the injuries sustained in that fall...I am sure in goes a bit deeper than that but after his fall he died a couple of days after that..

Yeah, back in the day I remember hearing that instead of the heart attack story... except it was also followed up with "because he didn't have the energy to walk like a normal person, because he wasn't eating carbs so he just collapsed." :annoyed:

Not true. Yes, he was in the hospital due to a fall and yes he gained weight due to Gluscose Intravenous feedings, and yes, he died from heart problems. Even his wife said this although she said he had heart problems due to some virus.

Google Snopes with the question how Atkins dies plus plus just Google the question. His wife gave an interview giving those same facts.

Here's one interview with Mrs. Atkins: (there are others too.)

he had cardiomyopathy(the viral version I believe)

If you remember when Rod Donald the leader of the New Zealand Green party died it was from that.He was fit,he didn't even own a car he just biked everywhere.

Yeah people brought up his cardiac history too which he had but it was not diet related.Apparently the emergency medical treatment from the fall did make him swell and people used that to falsely claim he couldn't even follow his own plan.I also heard Gary Taubes being called obese the other day.I laughed.

watcher513 04-19-2013 01:24 AM

Taubes obese?! They must be blind.

snowdancer79 04-19-2013 06:39 AM

The one time I posted something regarding my weight loss on Facebook, a "friend" started telling me I needed to be careful because he died of a heart attack and Atkins is dangerous. I told her that was a myth, but apparently she knew better than I did. She is not a skinny girl, and I think she was just trying to rain on my parade. Well rain away, because Dr. Atkins had it right and has helped so many people in this world achieve health and happiness.

along a similar line, a relative had his car hit by a tractor trailer and in trying to save his life he was pumped full of solutions and fluids etc as well he swelled up from the incredible inflammation and trama to his body. Before death he weighed at most 130 pounds but on the death certificate they weighed him as 235. The swelling and added fluid etc were so bad that he supposedly gained 100+ pounds in the space of 12-14 hours.

so I can definitely see how people may have thought Dr. Atkins was "obese" at death but it no doubt was fluid and swelling from the trama and life-saving efforts.

That's what I was thinking!

kiwistars 04-19-2013 09:49 PM

I just had someone get nasty at me today on facebook when they made a horrible comment about Atkins and I said 'but he died from slipping on ice...'

wow.You would think I have offered to push them on the ice!People are so touchy.I think maybe it's jealousy as she knows I am losing weight low carb and she has 'failed' boot camp and diet camp twice. Why she doesn't just give LC a try I don't know if that is the case...

Ntombi 04-19-2013 10:55 PM

I was doing Atkins when Dr. Atkins died, and it was a bloodbath. All the nasty people came out to spew their two cents. :( He deserved better.

LiterateGriffin 04-20-2013 06:01 AM

My HUSBAND (who's not LC, but is supportive of it, and has watched the Lustig videos... and lives with ME, after all) had someone at work tell him Dr. Atkins died obese of a heart attack.

His response was simple, "Really? Go Google it."

Hubby knew that wasn't the correct version, because I'd ranted to him about things -- the slip on the ice, the normal-weight on hospital entry but bloated by time of death, the viral-caused heart attack, etc, etc.

My heart goes out to his widow, who not only lost the man she loved, but has had to endure his vilification and the vilification of his death.

Avicenna 04-20-2013 08:03 AM

I think the issue is not how he died but rather that people are making a moral/ideological issue of it. Say that he had died of a heart attack...so what? Heart problems are one the main causes of death, and unless someone actually has evidence that people who follow the Atkins plan regularly have heart attacks, that doesn't mean anything. I think it is better to get to the real issue and call people on why they are being so judgemental about i,t especially if they probably know little to nothing about him, and why they are buying into the popular mentality of making food/weight into a guilt issue.

I also think that, in general, it is in poor taste to talk badly about the deceased, unless they were notorious criminals or something, and it doesn't hurt to remind people of that.

In this day and age, there are some ethical issues surrounding encouraging people to eat meat and animal products, such as factory farming, environmental concerns, unequal distribution of wealth whereby some people can eat meat every day and some can't even eat it once a year, etc. However those are completely different issues and probably are not what is inspiring these kinds of remarks.

rubidoux 04-20-2013 11:39 AM

An awful lot of people who have eaten low fat have diet of heart attacks, including serious marathoners and sports heros.
