Buffy new member introduction

Hi there! I am Buffy and live in Wells BC Canada where we get way more than our share of snow lol.... it usually is gone by July (I kid you not)! I, along with my husband, have been on and off the 'low carb' way of life since Jan 2012.
That is when my doctor suggested we try it. It worked better for my hubby than for me in terms of pounds so I gave up for a time. This years resolution was to get back on that diet and so I am.

Being on a low carb lifestyle in a high carb town is kind of hard when its just the two of us. That's why I was so hyped to discover this wonderful site!!
So far all the recipes we have tried from here have been more than just 'edible' - they have been delicious (especially liked the pizza with cauliflower crust).

My biggest problem is with wine (with dinner) which I overcame with using a liquour glass instead of a wine glass (only 2 ounces). My second biggest problem is with chips/cheezies/partymix - I have tried the kale/spinach 'chips' and they are ok but any more suggestions would be helpful.

I look forward to learning and sharing with the good folks here!

Cheers,

Buffy

I already knew I ate too much bread - 4 slices for breakfast and four for lunch - so looking for non bread diets was a no brainer. Found this web site and another and after a few hours of reading threads decided it was doable. Did it for 2 days before telling my family DD decided she'd join me and we've been doing it since. The first meals were a bit dull, but I look at low carb reciepes every day for ideas and now the meals are scrummy!
I havent done 'induction', and Im not always sure of the carb content of the food Im eating but I have lost inches and kgs over the 2 weeks Ive been doing it
Sadly I indulged in a few glasses of wine on the weekend and bam! no more weight loss So I decided to register for some accountability.

Sorry for the long winded intro - I had a lot to say and no one to say it too
We just had friends over for Euchre and I had two margaritas (5 carbs each) so I can commiserate. I am also new on here. Hope to chat with you more.

Cheers,

You can make cheese 'taco chips' by microwaving cut up cheese slices for a minute and letting them cool. They go lacy and crunchy.

do it on parchment or baking paper and watch carefully as all microwaves are a little different.

Another Do-Over-er

Hi everyone! I'm Carol, and I've probably lost well over 250 lbs... just never all at once! As a young teen, I lost 60 lbs. when the doctor warned I was on the verge of becoming diabetic. Gained 55 while pregnant in 1984, and already a few lbs. overweight; about 3 years later reached goal again. In 2009, I reached goal with a 53 lb. weight loss. In 2010, my adult son had cancer, and I rushed to his side. Wanting to build him up, I cooked for him & fed him much more than necessary--I gained 30 lbs. (He is totally well & cancer free now!) Lost that.... then had to move from SoCal to Dallas... chomp chomp chomp, stress & new cuisine to sample and BAM!!! Up 31 pounds.

I'm hypoglycemic, too, which I've been told is a "diabetic waiting to happen," so I should ALWAYS be watching my carbs. After a month of a certain commercial weight loss program resulting in a 1 lb. loss, I'm returning to low-carb. 4 lbs. gone in 3 days--while I know it's mostly water, that's DEFINITELY more like it!

Really excited to being this journey once again in earnest. It's freakin' HOT in Dallas, and I canNOT be this large in summer!!!! I'll croak!

Looking forward to sharing growth... well, SHRINKAGE... learning, encouragement & inspiration with all of you.

We are all in this together. My most recent blood test revealed elevated cholesterol, triglycerides, and worst sugars. Looks like my present life style choices coupled with the same genetics of my diabetic parents who both suffer from the same ailments has forced me to make a decision about my life and it begins now. I am new to low carbing. It is a far different diet then the usual white rice, starchy noodles, fried carbohydrates, and sweetened concoctions I am accustomed to consuming on a daily basis.
I refuse to lose control of my blood sugar. I refuse to continue suffering from the elevated mood swings and cravings I have taken as normal daily behavior. I make the choice to live my life healthy and deliberately make good decisions in what I eat, adopting consistent exercises, and how I view commercial food that is too readily available. Winter has been bad for me here in Chicago. Cold weather, cold weather, oh and more cold weather has only worsened my diabetic conditions through lack of exercise, poor eating habits, and a general malaise that has over come me. This all ends. But I cannot do this alone. Forum friends, I look to you. Let me gather from your experiences and posts the knowledge and wisdom I need to make this affirmation a solid one for my future health.
Thanks,
Ian from Chicago.

Hi I am back again I have to stick to something I will be 50 in June and I need to get this weight off. My rheumatologist wants me to consider gastro since I have been struggling the last 10yrs. I have a friend that lost over 100lbs on the 17 Day Diet so I am going to try it. It's seems like the first phase is like induction to atkins except you can have fruit and yogurt befor 2pm. Has any else ever done this? I need help

Hi everyone, I'm new to this sight and new to low carb dieting. Last Wednesday I started this, and me being a person who ate something sweet with every meal really struggled the first few days. I still have a hard time but not as bad as it was. I weighed myself Sunday and have lost 9lbs in less than a week. I am 43 years old and live in Michigan, I have a beautiful 8 year old daughter. I want to loose 40lbs. I was admitted into the hospital last July with heart problems (which runs in my family) I want to be around to see my little one grow up to be a happy successful woman, and in order to do this I need to be healthy. So here I am. Looking forward to meeting you and learning new things from you. Thank you a head of time...

Newbie....sorta. ;-) I did this ten years ago, lost 70 lbs, but....

Good morning! I've been reading some of the posts, thought I'd finally join. I've always had a weight problem, up and down over the years depending on how strong my willpower was to stick to a low cal/fat diet. Then I found Atkins and the weight came off easily even though I was eating *more*. Yep, I did this once, back in '03, and lost 70 lbs. I kept it off for a couple years until I needed 3 surgeries in 2005....I was depressed and stuck at home a lot, so a year later I was up 40 pounds. Well, once I started gaining, I just kind of gave up on it. To top it off, fast forward to 2010 and I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer for the second time in my life. (I was 44 at the time, I had it the first time...stage 1...at 26) So then I basically had two years in hell of chemo/radiation/6 MORE surgeries (double mastectomy and countless reconstruction surgeries)...which equaled being very sedentary because I was incapacitated more than not and eating comfort food when I didn't feel sick. Soooo...I had gained all my 70 pounds back plus 20-25 more.

So, I haven't had any surgeries since last April. (2012) I have to be careful and wear a bra 24/7 because one side of reconstruction is very delicate...but I'm cancer free and feeling GREAT! And I had FUN FUN FUN last year! Believe me, I made up for the past two years....traveling, going out with friends, parties. GOOD TIMES! Now here I am, I finally feel like my life is back to normal and I can enjoy it, BUT...not happy that I'm a size 16 again.

So one day a lightbulb went on, *snap, crackle, pop*, and I thought, 'I'm going to do low carb again!!' Yeah, let's face it, carbs are yummy. But I've never been a moderation person, I'm more of an all or nothing person. So obviously, all carbs is not good for me....I don't need a medical research report, I'm living proof! So I went back on Atkins March third. I had a houseguest in for Spring Break and deviated a little, mostly with alcohol, but still have lost 13 pounds. I'm so happy with that! I got through the first week of blahs, so now I'm good to go.

I like to come on here and read how others are doing, check out recipes, etc....a little motivation and company in the journey. Unfortunately, I have a hubby that can eat almost whatever he wants...so he doesn't quite get the struggle.

Have a good day!

Bren

I am new but not new to low carb

Hi my name is Faith
Several years ago I lost over 40 lbs on Atkins and my dh lost about 80 lbs My DH kept off 80 lbs for many years however has gained about 50 lbs back last year. I however i gain mine all back plus more in a shorter period of time. I am sick of looking like a egg with legs
I turned 50 at the beginning of March and I am determined to look better now then I did at in my 40's
I have been in ketosis for about 4 days
Had the ketosis flu and now just feeling energetic. I am down 4 lbs yipee
My goal is to give away 60 lbs
My dh is also on this journey but I am worried that because we both have gone on and off LC many times perhaps will not have same results. Has anyone heard of this before?

new to forum

Hello everyone, actually I am a fat new gran and hoping for some inspiration from folks so I can trim my middle in particular. Atkins has worked for me in the past, so that's what I feel like returning to. I need support and will be happy to offer the same to others.

Lixpeni, I am also intrigued by parts of the 17 day approach. I am assuming there is a thread about that somewhere here. I like the concept of 17 minutes of exercise . . . that amount can kind of shame me into moving my butt. One thing about that approach that I am not sure about is the low fat dresssing recommendation. I have been so atkinized that I always look for the low carb dressing. Anyone else have opinions about this?

Hi! I'm new to this also...I joined yesterday after a little lurking and liking what I saw. :-) I feel like I've joined AA-the first step was actually admitting how much I weigh to someone other than my doctor! Actually, I think I have a case of reverse anorexia...I look in the mirror and see a slim person...anywhoooo...I started Atkins as I remember it on Monday, March 25, 2013. It's now Thursday, March 28, 2013. I'm still not in ketosis, and I don't know if I've lost yet, I go to the Doctor next Tuesday, so I'll get weighed then...Two of my coworkers are on Atkins and doing successful so that's why I'm giving it a shot. I actually started my weight loss quest back in November by going to the gym, but I wasn't watching what I ate and lost a grand total of 2 pounds between November and now. Seems like there is a lot of good info to be had on here and I look forward to chatting with and learning from you! Hopefully when I get to my goal, I'll be able to inspire others also! Julie

I'm a Renewbie!

Hi all! It's been forever since I've been so I think by now I'm a 'renewbie'
I have always done Atkins/Low Carb off and on....mostly off lately and I'm feeling it healthwise. Health has mostly been my motivation in the past, but of course being a smaller size is great too!
I've missed the incredible knowledge and ideas here and decided to come out of lurkerdom again and say hi to everyone
I sure have some catching up to do!

Hi all!
I am new to this forum but not LC. I have lost so much weight so many times I have lost count . Now I have learned it is a total lifestyle change. I am part of TOPS and I love the organization but sometimes I get into problems early in the morning or late at night after my afternoon shift at work. I know there will always be someone here to talk to if I can't call my friends.
I am a gluten free vegetarian. I have food allergies. I weigh and measure my food. I have no sense of portion control. i read allot of 12 step books to help me understand what is going on trying to stop the binge.

Look forward to meet lots of people.

Annie

You will be fine. You do not need exercise to lose weight. Period. I lost my initial 60 pounds with zero exercise and a sedentary lifestyle. I've lost another ~10 pounds without exercise.

Lots of good health reasons for moderate exercise, and in some cases it can help with weight loss if you build muscle mass, but other than that there isn't a lot of benefit as far as weight loss is concerned.

Newbie

Hey there everyone. I am just starting to take my weight seriously. I am 58 years old and need to lose about 25 lbs. I am too old to be carrying around all this extra weight. I really believe the low carb way is the way to go. I will be going to the grocery store to buy the veggies and proteins for the next week. I checked the Atkins website and reviewed the Induction Period - the first two weeks of very low carbs to break the hold that the carbs have on us and it sounds reasonable.

Welcome Back!

I have tried the 17DD. It does have similarities to induction, with the exception of a fruit and yogurt. The best advice I can give is to plan ahead. The one trouble spot I always have with my eating plans is that we are always on the go. Literally every night at a ballpark. It's difficult to plan or bring your food for the entire day when you aren't sure when you will be able to get back home.

I had pretty good success with it. Lost about 10 pounds in the first 17 days.
Stick with it and you will do well!

new to this site, but not new to LC

Around 2003 and 2004 I lost about 90 pounds on Atkins/ South Beach/ My own LC plan. I have gained every bit of that back, and more in the last 7 or so years. I need to take that weight off again, and keep it off this time.

I'm 32 years old.

I don't work out at all, but I want to start.

I have tried almost every diet fad under the sun... LC is the only thing that works for me. I have finally realized that it is the only way of life for me- it can't just be a temporary thing this time.

I plan to stay very close to induction until I've got my weight under control- so until I've lost the first 50 or so pounds.

I've lost 10 pounds and tomorrow will be my 14th day this time.

I can not stop reading!
