My name is Barb, I am new to the forum but not to Adkins. My husband and I are retired and just do whatever we want to do. Right now he is on his way to Cardinal Spring training games in Fl. and I have the house to myself. During this time alone I want to reflect om my past accomplishments while on Adkins and renew my committment to myself to be a lifer with Adkins. I am 5' 4 " and weigh 165 on my way to 135. I am also just keeping DB knocking at the door. I just cannt trim the waistline, ugh.

Hi Barb!

Some time alone to reflect is good, I hope it helps you to keep on track!

Joined today, mostly as I am trying to figure out my lack of appetite and bloating. I am not following a specific diet, just not eating grains and fruits and potatoes. I am eating eggs, fish, some cheddar cheese, lots and lots of raw veggies in a salad (this is not new, I eat daily salads and have for years), nuts and some chicken. I don't really enjoy lots of red meat, but I am not opposed to eating it.

Fats are ghee, olive oil, coconut oil and butter (also sesame seed oil in the raw tahini I eat with my salad).

Anyway, off to look for a thread that can shed some light on the bloating and appetite issues.

(I LONG for bread or fruit. I am 5 days in and really miss bread, pasta and fruit )

Introduction

Hello, My name is Carol.
I've been a Carb addict my whole life and I'm ready to figure out how to stop it. I had Gastric Bypass in 2008. Started out at 5'11" and 300lbs. I lost 135lbs and maintained it for two years.. then I lost my mother in 2011 and I've gained 40lbs in 18 months... I'd like to learn how to get back to where i'm comfortable. My main challenge is my eating habits and my limited menu. Theres a long list of things that i don't like.. Most vegetables are included. So are most Condiments, sauces and dressings. This has made it difficult to say the least. I'm hoping to find a way to eat healthy.

Hi! I hear you re: fruit. This is my second go round on Atkins, and I'm modifying induction the same way I did the first time. I include Greek yogurt, nuts and strawberries in small amounts. That takes care of that craving

Good luck!

Newbie here on site but not to Atkins

Hi a friend on another forum said this was a great site so I thought I would check it out.

I am losing on Atkins for the second time (Atkins 2002 version) and it is good to find a website that seems to be strictly Low-Card dieting. I used Atkins back in 2004 I think and lost 82 lbs with the bulk being gone around the first or middle of July (I had started sometimes in February). That was from the 200 pound mark, a weight that I never thought I would see again, but in the last four years with depression, stress, losing my grandmother and finally quitting cigarettes here I am again.

So far I am getting really close to 190 and I started my Atkins on the 14th.
I feel great!

Peg

New and saying Hi!`

Hello, everyone! My name is Kim, and I'm pretty brand new to the boards. I've read a few of the threads, but I haven't posted until now.

A bit about me....

For years I resisted the low carb approach to weight loss because I bought into the thought process that eliminating an entire food group was not a good thing. Well, this meant I did one weight loss program after another for years. I was fairly successful on one plan that helped me lose over 100 lbs, and I kept it off for about 5 years. Then I moved to an area that didn't offer much in the way of safe places to exercise. The pounds crept back on over the next 5 years bringing along a few pesky friends. The plan I had lost the weight on lost all its appeal, and I just couldn't get motivated to do anything about it outside of researching weight loss surgery options

Then motivation hit me square between the eyes after a yearly checkup at the doctors office. My fasting blood sugar was 136, HbA1C was 6.7, and my cholesterol was 210! All of these numbers were outrageous to me because I have never even been close to having high blood sugar or cholesterol levels. Last year, I had a full work up while I was hospitalized with pneumonia; however, my levels were not even in the neighborhood of borderline much less high.

I started researching online and calling my biological sister that I had just found a few years ago to check on family medical history. I knew she had diabetes and so did our uncle, but I had no clue how many members of my birth family had diabetes and heart disease. This is not something for me to take lightly at all. I knew from researching Bariatric Surgery that most surgeons put their patients on low carb diets, so I decided to give it a shot and see if I could do it. Further research led to the information about the Atkins Diet helping control blood sugars and even reversing type 2 diabetes in some patients. Since my blood sugar levels are just barely in the diabetic category, I figured it was worth a try to see if I can get my blood sugars under control. The official diagnosis of diabetes will require a second fasting blood sugar test and HbA1C test in June. If I can get my numbers down by then, I can save myself from the official label. However, I now know this is something I have to be careful of for the rest of my life. It is not optional!

I started looking at how many carbs I was consuming, and it was OUTRAGEOUS!!!! In addition to the 265g, I drank everyday just in Coca-Cola, there was all the food!!! I estimate I was consuming close to 1000 grams of carbs a day!!! Everything I ate and drank was loaded with them. There is no bigger potato or bean lover on the planet, and I also love cookies, cakes, candy, and cornbread!!! It took about 2 weeks for me to tweak down to 20g of carbs a day or less because I was totally carb clueless. I would think I was below 20g, but find out there were hidden carbs I didn't realize I was taking in. However, I finally got it figured out and got the headache!!! It only lasted a couple of days, and the next day it was like a light switch was flipped!! I had energy and lots of it! I was also in a fantastic mood which made me realize just how depressed I had actually been without even realizing it. I decided then and there I would never go back to eating that many carbs again just because I never want to feel that bad again. I really think the carbs are poison for me. Knowing I have a very large genetic disposition to diabetes, helps me to view carbs as little razor blades slicing through my blood vessels and arteries. This makes it easier to avoid carbs.

The nice little bonus . . . I have lost 21 lbs in three weeks, and my blood sugar levels are already back in the normal range. (Fasting blood sugar is 105, and 2 hours after eating it is 99 or 100!!!) It will only get lower the longer I am eating low carb!!! I am thrilled! I will probably reintroduce low carb breads and treats into my meal plans a few times a week sooner than Atkins recommends; however, I am in this for life not just to lose weight. I would love to lose about 160 lbs, but my goal is to be healthy not reach a number on the scale.

I look forward to getting to know everyone, and support each other in this lifestyle.

Thanks!!! Hope this didn't put anyone to sleep!!! LOL!!!

Hello fello low-carbers

I'm Samantha, I am 36 and a SAHM to one lovely toddler in the Uk.
I am low carbing for two reasons.
Mainly weight loss - I am 56lbs over weight and would like to drop those before my Summer holidays. The second reason is probably more important; grains make me feel so ill. Wheat, rice, corn, rye and sugar all make me feel rotten. Migraine, joint pain, lethargy, stomach ache, indigestion etc

Today is my first day ... good luck everybody. x x

Hello all - long time lurker here. Thank you all for your wonderful, helpful, informative, funny, and honest posts, they have helped me SO much. I've been doing low-carb (this time) since November 2012 and am down 34 pounds as of today. I stalled the last few weeks so have been doing the meat & egg fast since yesterday, and it seems to be really helping! Again thank you all, I love these boards!

Hi everyone.

Im new to low carbing. I noticed a couple of weeks ago that i was struggling to get my jeans on - jeans that I bought a size bigger a few months ago than i usually wear! I did a bit of random googling and kept seeing this comment about women with a waist of 35 inches or more were at risk of lots of health issues. took a measurement and 35 inches on the mark!
I already knew I ate too much bread - 4 slices for breakfast and four for lunch - so looking for non bread diets was a no brainer. Found this web site and another and after a few hours of reading threads decided it was doable. Did it for 2 days before telling my family DD decided she'd join me and we've been doing it since. The first meals were a bit dull, but I look at low carb reciepes every day for ideas and now the meals are scrummy!
I havent done 'induction', and Im not always sure of the carb content of the food Im eating but I have lost inches and kgs over the 2 weeks Ive been doing it
Sadly I indulged in a few glasses of wine on the weekend and bam! no more weight loss So I decided to register for some accountability.

Sorry for the long winded intro - I had a lot to say and no one to say it too

I began Atkins three weeks ago. I lost 20 on induction then gained four back. SO disappointing. Doing better now. I need to loose 100 lbs and thirty of that by May per my doctor. I miss eating snacks like chips and bread. I have been depressed by health issues as i cannot walk well due to wt. Issues. Exercise is a big problem for me. I need lots of suggestions as i know my husband is tired of Atkins type meals already. Thanks.

I cant help you with induction, I never did it. I google LC reciepes a lot and get lots of ideas from that.

Wow. Thank you so much. I was afraid to click on the Induction Food Porn thread because I figured it was going to be pictures of food people deprive themselves of on Induction. Now I've gone through it a little bit and wow, great recipes!

Best to post a question like this in the Lobby or one of the sub-forums. But there are a couple of free podcasts that might be a lot of help to you.

This one is about beating your carb cravings. Very informative with specific recommendations. Google "ATLCX (Episode 19): How To Beat Carbohydrate Addiction | Julia Ross".

This one particularly mentions bloating. Google "Livin La Vida Low-Carb Show Episode 266: Julia Ross Says Carbohydrates Aren’t Food, They’re Addictive Drugs".

Hi everyone! I've been lurking on this board for a while and think it's a great place to learn about low carb, share experiences and help others if I can.

I started low carbing just under a year ago. I've dropped 90 pounds so far and would love to drop about another 40 (46 years old 6'1" male). Low carb's worked just fantastic for me. I feel better with much more energy, never really hungry like I always was on other diets (low fat/low calorie).

Looke forward to participating in the forum!

All the best! - Jimmy
