I did use one when I got to my high weight just to see what my bmi was, and it was in the 24 range, so basically overweight, which corresponded to how I felt and looked.

But, for my goal weight I just went back to what I weighed before I gained weight, and the regular BMI chart shows that as underweight. But, then I found a BMI calculator that accounts for frame size, and since mine is small, my BMI is within normal range.

I think the one on the NIH website is the standard one.

Just go by how you feel- BMI ranges are pretty wide for a healthy weight.

I do use one, but I also recognize that the BMI charts are just WAY in the heck off and try not to pay any attention to them The problem with them is, they just take your height and your weight and go to town with telling you how overweight you are (if you have a higher BMI anyway) and they don't account for muscle mass or bone structure or anything like that... which is obviously VERY important! It's body fat that makes us "overweight" or "obese," not lean muscle mass or our bones

Try googling "height weight frame size chart" and see what you come up with there. That's what I actually did. I'm either on the very upper level of "medium" framed or toward the bottom of "large" framed bone structure-wise based on my wrist measurement... so knowing that, and knowing my height I was able to look at a decent "goal" range for my size

Thanks! The last BMI cal I used said I should be around 125-130 for my 5'5 height! Heck i'd look like I was sick if I weighed that! I tried the BMI on LCF and it says i'm on the Higher side of Normal at 153 lbs. I've decided long ago that my goal is 140 because I want that 5 lb cushion. But I may stop at 145 depending on how I feel/look. Right Now I need to lose those last 10 lbs or so And tone up! I'll google the height/weight/frame chart. How do you tell what "frame" you are? My wrists look pretty small.

I just found this one that includes frame size -

BMI Calculator

I also like how it tells you your weight is "desirable" if it's normal and not under/over weight

Found the way to measure "frame" and it says i'm Medium frame. So I "should" weigh between 121-140 lbs. So 140 would be where I was thinking anyway

Best BMI calculator i've ever seen! Most of the calculators I have seen report my weight as giving me a "normal" BMI...but I know this is wrong. The mirror clearly shows an excess of abdominal fat.
This calculator had me just into the "overweight" level. Even though a loss of only a couple of pounds would put me at the high end of "desirable" the chart clearly showed that the range of desirable bmi would include a weight well below my ultimate desired weight. This is the first chart to show this. Most others would call me "underweight" at my ultimate goal weight, and I know from experience that they are wrong.
Great find!

Avid that's where my excess weight/fat is too. Abdominal area needs a Lot of work still. I've lost quite a bit there but still quite a bit to go. I Can finally feel my hip bones though! Whoo Hoo! Lol!

If you want to see something interesting, do a Google search for 'Illustrated BMI categories'. It's a flickr album with pictures that people have uploaded of themselves at various weights & BMI categories.

That link is a good one, because it accounts for frame size. I used to think I had a medium frame until I found out how overweight I was. My goal weight was way to high for my frame size originally. When I got down to my original goal weight, something was wrong, I still had several pounds of excess bodyfat. I am at a much healthier weight now for my frame size.

Yes, as discussed here many times that abdominal fat is very tough to lose.
I have been working out at the gym for almost a year now, and even though I work my entire core area hard the fat is still there. I'm not discouraged though....I know that sticking with the LC lifestyle and the gym will bring me to the "best I can be"...
and that's good enough for me.
Good luck to all of you sharing thier journey here at LCF

I like the one that webMD uses as it factors gender, age and pants size along with height and weight.

I'd never use BMI (it does not account for body composition) & don't believe in scale-based goals.

That BMI is scary!!When did they decide that a BMI of 17.5 was desirable for a woman!!I am 6 foot tall and even with a tiny frame ,127lb would have me hospitalized!!

Also when did a BMI of 22 become overweight?
It used to be 18-24 for men,19-25 for women.

I used to be skinny(as in comments from strangers skinny) at 147lb.

footnote my frame is _small_ if I was only 5' 2" let alone 6 foot.

It's just a guide and won't work for everyone. At your height and 127 and an average frame the bmi becomes underweight.

I am just worried at how dangerous the numbers they are suggesting are.I have the smallest frame possible and even so the numbers are scary. At 147lb(lower than my current goal)I was a US size 6 in an A cup bra,all hipbones and collar bones sticking out.I guess 10-12% body fat?
This BMI said I was _overweight_ and should lose another 20lb?!!

if i had seen this at 18 I might have tried...

It depends on your build. I don't have bones jutting out anywhere and I am 110 at 5'6. But, I also have a really small frame and small bust.

If these charts made people go out and achieve very low weights we wouldnt have an obesity epidemic.

I think you made a mistake, at 147 and 6 feet you are not shown as overweight.

O.K. it was being glitchy now it says desirable. It now says overweight at 165lb.But that is still a BMI of 22 and a tiny bit. When did they change the categories for overweight?

Kiwistars.... which BMI calculator are you using?

The webMD calculator says for a woman with a height of 6 ft, a healthy weight is 136 - 184 lbs. So your goal of about 150 is pretty much in the middle of that.

Oh I played with it.I think they just moved the BMI number over a few to do small frame as 22 is desirable for average frame but overweight for a small frame.

my goal weight is a combination of the one you just used here and my weight history.I was playing with the one in previous posts in the thread that adjusts for frame.

this is from an Australian site so I think they have different BMI ranges (probably because their obesity levels are much lower so their average weights aren't as high).

I am in N.Z. and I am sad to say our rate is third behind the US and Australia for obesity last time I looked.
BMI is a mathematical formula based on desirable weight not averages so it is not meant to change even in a slim country.

weight(kg) divided by height(mtrs)X2 is the metric formula.
