Beef Jerky
 
I'm leaving on a trip in a few days. The flight leaves at 0800 and it is a 5 hour trip. I looked at the inflight breakfast and it is not low carb friendly. I went to the store today to buy some snacks and I really wanted beef jerky but they all had 6 grams of sugar per serving or more. Is there any low sugar or sugar free products out there? If so, where do you get the jerky and the name brand. TIA

I've never seen jerky without sugar so I do without.

I guess some people are OK with eating a little bit in jerky & others make their own.

Have you tried requesting a special diet meal for the flight? I've done that when flying.

Oberto bacon jerky is 1 carb per ounce according to the package. It's cured with water, salt and sugar. So I can't say for sure if it really is as low as it says it is. It's the lowest packaged jerky that I've ever run across. Like you said, most everything is 3-6 per ounce, which is way too much. I get the Oberto at Sams Club, but I think Wal Mart carries it as well. I know long flights can be tough, so good luck staying on track. ;)

I found a "local" brand in the gas station, of all places, but it's not widely available.

Look at the "pepperoni sticks" instead. They're generally sugar-free. (Think "Slim-Jim" style). Look near the jerky.

We flew cross-country in September. Sadly, the days of full meals on planes (let alone being able to special order a meal!) seem to be behind us.

Also, macadamia nuts are your airplane-friend. :D (Or were for us!)

Thanks for the replies.....I was afraid low carb beef jerky might be hard to find. I bought Baby Bel cheese, nuts, dried salami. I will buy the mac nuts and pepperoni sticks tomorrow. My goal isn't to eat a meal on the plane but snack on a few things until we land and I can get real food.

My husband loves that kind of food so I have to get enough for him too. I won't gorge on it but just enough to stave off severe hunger.lol

My whole family flew cross-country (CA to FL) in Sept. From the time we got up that morning, we did not have access to a single full-meal OR any snack that wasn't carb-based... except for the bag of home-made "trail mix" I'd packed in my purse. Heavy on the macadamias... Boy, was that a lifesaver!

And I go through kicks where I buy pepperoni sticks in bulk, because they're so easy to carry.

I've got no problem making a meal out of snack-foods. And this IS your breakfast. :)

I have some beef marinating at this moment. I will oven dry it tomorrow...hoping for a great jerky! Love being able to pick the ingredients.

Recipe??? I love the idea of doing my own. How long do you oven dry it. Does it need to be refrigerated after it is done? I don't think I will have time to do before I leave but it sure will come in handy this summer.

I buy terrific beef jerky online that is grass fed, grass finished and processed with NO sugar. If you check around, you can find it, but it is expensive. To me, quality food is worth the cost--because eating low carb I believe I actually save in the long run by not buying fast food, carby snacks or other things that are typical of the SAD.

This is my first attempt so I will be happy to share if it turns out well. I did a google search for recipes and then used my grass fed beef and wheat free soy etc. It will 'cook' for around 8 hours today and then I can evaluate!! :yummy:

There is a brand called Grass Fed Jerky Chews that is great- grassfed beef, and only seasoning like salt, no sugar.

What about just eating beforehand or after, or fasting? I hate carrying food around so I usually just do a short fast, and it's supposed to help with jet lag as well.

I am going to be doing some long air travel soon and was thinking that making some almond crackers would be good for travel as well. They are good on their own or can be a 'vehicle' to some plane food. Macadamia nuts are the best for this situation as they are both filling and quite portable.

Well, it is a big window of time where you can't eat LC easily when you count the before flight time, time in plane, deplaning and getting luggage, etc.

Maybe as much as 10 hours?

I'd try to eat a hearty LC breakfast before leaving for the airport. 5 ounces of macadamia nuts is about 1000 calories and very LC friendly so I'd try to take that, along with whatever else, and reserve it for myself. If you can find some low sugar no sugar jerky I'd take some along to eat myself too.

I wouldn't worry about calories. The important thing is not to get in a position where you are starving and go off plan.

Depending on where the destination is, it can be quite a long time to go without food. I am a frequent intermittent faster but this is not the same.

With 1/2 hour travel to the airport, arriving 2 hrs. before departure, an 8 hour flight (assuming on schedule), waiting 1.5 hours for connecting flight... another 2.5 hours of flying and then customs, gathering luggage, collecting rental car and then travelling to final destination.... it can be a very long time and that is if everything goes as scheduled!

I consider that a nice break from eating and a break for my body. I love not having to be occupied with food, and not schlepping around stuff to eat. Plus, then I have a good appetite later and really enjoy my food.

But, I don't get tempted to go off plan if I am a little hungry, so it might not work for other people as well. YMMV. I'm also at goal and couldn't afford to eat 1000 calories of snacks on the plane when I usually eat 1200 for the whole day.

Eating before hand will be tough. I live 2 1/2 hours from the airport so I need to leave here no later then 4:30. Even staying at a hotel close to the airport we need to leave the room at 6:15 to catch the shuttle. Most restaurants are closed in the airport. Wendy's will be open. May go there and do some muffin tossing but I have to plan if timing isn't right. Planning ahead is what keeps us on plan.
Our return flight is at 0745. These 2 times were the only none stop flights available.

I guess it is a matter of perspective. In a situation like that the important thing, to me, is to stay LC. Gaining 6 ounce of body weight is neither here nor there. Not allowing myself to be willingly put in a situation where I might go off plan in a big way would be my goal.

The whole issue is control. A relatively long period of time as a fast is fine, refreshing even, *if* you are in control of the environment and can gracefully fail at the fast by throwing in the towel and eating LC.

I need to think ahead for traveling and flying, plus I do a two week field trip with students in August that is very challenging. I need an absolute backup for when schedules go awry and I get stressed. I am thinking the almond crackers sound like a winner, not requring refrigeration, and something I could probably find a toppers for, maybe some of the mini cheese wedges could work. Jerky too, but it is hard to find good. Food dehydator has been on my lwish list for quite a while so maybe it is time.

Jack Link's Beef Steak are my favorite. Not too dry, not too chewy.
I get the Original or Peppered.
(Teriyaki & other flavors are too sweet.)

They come in 1oz pkgs which don't have nutrition info on them, but the 2 oz package (which is VERY filling!!!) says (for the whole 2oz):
120 calories
2 g fat
3 g carb (2g sugar)
23 g protein

So, they're not sugar-free but pretty low ratio to the protein, and a 1 oz serving with a nice cup of coffee keeps me full for a long time.

I get them at WalMart, about $1 for the 1oz pkg
(which is pretty economical, too...lots of jerky is $22 or more per lb).

Sunflower seeds in the shell are a nice way to keep yourself busy if you're getting the urge to snack or crunch but aren't terribly hungry, and the calories won't pile up as quickly as eating peanuts, macadamia nuts, etc! :laugh:

Either my oven was too hot or they simply dried out a lot faster than expected because it is like bark.... hurt my teeth to try and chew. I had set my oven for the lowest temp it would allow of 170 and the beef was in there for around 4 hours. I will try again.

Cathy, you might try rehydrating the meat by putting a dish of water in the oven with the meat to make a high humidity environment. Dunno if that'd work but you have nothing to lose I reckon.
