I'll apologize in advance for the long post, but I wanted to share this.
My DBF is 60, he has COPD (45 years of smoking ), high cholesterol, and has been pre-diabetic for years. His Dr. has him on cholesterol medication, and recently put him on a medication to help protect his kidneys from the high blood sugar. The medication for his kidneys had some side effects, so he quit taking it. I can really see where this headed. More medications, and then medications for the side effects of the medications and so on.....
This isn't what I want for him. We've talked so often about making changes and trying to get healthier, but life seems to keep getting in the way.
I've "used" Atkins many times over the years to lose weight, and then gone back to my old ways and gained it back. This is the first time that I've ever really been committed to it as a lifestyle. It's not just about losing the weight, although that plays into it, it's about being healthy and staying that way. Finally!
Anyway, about a week ago, he finally agreed to give this way of eating a try. He's tired of feeling so tired all the time. We agreed that this wasn't about losing weight for him, it's about getting his numbers down. Bringing down his cholesterol and blood sugar. That's our main goals for him. Mentally, he's having a really hard time with this. When I put a Ribeye Steak and Green Beans with Bacon in them in front of him for dinner, it goes against everything he's been taught for the last 60 years to sit there and eat that in an attempt to get healthier. He's really struggling with that.
But he got on the scale to see how much weight he had lost in a week.... and he's down 7 pounds!!! Now I realize that isn't our main goal, but it sure does help him to stay on track to see that number!
His Dr. has him come in every 3 months to have his blood work done, and by the time he goes in next month, he will have been eating this way for 6 weeks. I'm really praying that his numbers will be better and he'll be committed to this WOE too!!

That's wonderful!! it does take a few weeks for blood tests to catch up with the improvements he's making. If his tests don't look good this first visit, tell him to hang in there and read more about Atkins. In time his numbers will be great! And I'm sure he'll have loads of energy too! You're a good GF, enjoy this time eating well together!
