Added sugar in canned tomatoes??

WTH?? I made a homemade tomato sauce tonight, and grabbed my can of italian diced Red Gold tomatoes. I looked at the label and the sugars looked a little high, even for tomatoes. When I looked at the ingredients, the third one was sugar?? Why?? Tomatoes have enough sugar on their own. So I checked another brand and it had added high fructose corn syrup! Even worse.

So instead of making my own I grabbed my jar of Ragu reduced sugar sauce.

Anyone know a brand that does not add sugar? This has me really aggravated!

I usually buy Muir Glen organic tomatoes. Most varieties don't seem to have sugar. I don't get it either, why sugar is added to nearly everything. I recently discovered that my favorite broths had sugar added. I don't get that at all. There are brands without sugar added, but it really takes label reading to be sure.

The sweetness of the canned tomatoes depends on the season they're harvested. Some companies will add sugar to keep the flavor consistent during off-season harvests.

Most Red Gold tomato products do not have any sugar added... or HFCS! Their diced tomatoes list: Tomatoes, Tomato Juice, Salt, Citric Acid, Calcium Chloride

And there's 3g of sugar per serving for 5g total carbs

Oh, I wanted to add... it seems like your safest bet will always be to buy the plain old diced tomatoes and add your own seasonings to them. When there's added sugar, it's usually in the diced tomato blends like the Italian one you mentioned, or the ones for chili.

I'm usually so good about reading labels. I just figured tomatoes were safe. Lesson learned!!

It's hit and miss. Sometimes Hunt's brand don't, sometimes they do. I really hate the tiny black letters on the red backround! More often than not, I don't buy any.
I was low sugar long before I went low carb and it is in everything... tomatoes, corn, saltines...
I used to buy some decent frozen mixed vegetables, but now they are all "seasoned" or full of carrots!
Oh well, it encourages me to buy fresh.
