Planning and staying OP
 
Talk to me about how you eat.
Do you simply keep your house stocked with friendly foods and eat without prior planning?
Do you plan for the week? All meals, just dinners?
Do you freezer cook? Prep for the week all at once?

I plan dinners week by week. Our dinner week goes Wednesday-Tuesday so we sit down and plan out what we can make each day based on our schedules and what day to have leftovers. We hang the week on the refrigerator

I always have eggs, bacon and coffee, splends HWC for breakfast so I know how many carbs breakfast is.

Then, based on what I know breakfast is and what dinner is scheduled to be I plan out my lunch and snacks. I always have oopsie rolls on hand and I keep canned chicken available. We often have leftovers after a night of leftovers so I will take that.

I fail miserably if I don't plan and end up just not eating

I honestly don't plan TOO far ahead like some people do... I just make sure to keep my apartment stocked with LC friendly foods, and when I notice myself running low on something that's a staple food for me (eggs, HWC, nuts, butter, etc.) I go shopping before that becomes a problem and I have to reach for something else.

Meals, I usually cook up a TON of food at once (unless it's breakfast, but usually I do egg creams now anyway) usually in my crock pot. I check the grocery sales every week (or failing that, I check my freezer) and I try to build my week's meals mostly from what source of protein is on sale. If it's a good week for pork roasts, I'll buy a HUGE one for myself and stuff that in the crock pot and eat off of it all week. Sometimes I'll cook extra and freeze individual portions so I don't run into trouble and have to dine out when I'm feeling lazy, sometimes I don't freeze extras. It all depends on how I'm feeling that week/how much I eat/how often I stay at home :)

I think I basically only think a meal or two ahead. At the end of the day, I generally know I'm going to wake up and make some sort of egg cream unless I'm going out for breakfast with family or I'm craving bacon/eggs. After breakfast, I generally have an idea of what I'm going to have for lunch and probably dinner at that point. But I don't plan my entire week to a T. For me that'd be impossible, because I'm all over the place with what I want on any given day :hyst: I applaud people who can do that and stick to it though! I usually know "Okay, I have pork roast" and from there... who knows? Maybe it'll be a stir fry, maybe a "rice" bowl, or maybe even some sort of "pasta" with it. Maybe even an egg scramble. It's always an adventure with me! LOL

I'm not a planner. The closest I come to planning is to cook a big pot of soup for the freezer. My house has nothing, NOTHING, in it that is off plan, so whatever I decide to eat is fine.

I'm a 7-day planner and really base my success on it. By Friday the fridge is basically empty except for butter, grated cheese, pickles, condiments, water pitcher, and flour bin. The cupboard has oil, vinegar, spices, cocoa, tea, and coffee.

During the workday Friday I'll doodle up a list for the week and shop on the way home. Selecting quality meat and produce really gives me something to look forward to so I don't think about snacks. Once in a while I'll try a fancy recipe but most of the time it's lunchbox/bento salad, crock pot meats/stews, or big egg scrambles. Friday night I'll get salad bar from the grocery store, and Saturday/Sunday I'm usually socializing so I'll just have yogurt or veggie dip earlier in the day.

I know some people keep a stock of cured meat, cheese, and nuts around but that really backfires for me.

I plan my day's eating every morning after talking to the husband about what he's in the mood for that day. (Sometimes we must diverge since he's vegetarian, but often I just do my own version of whatever he's eating or make him a version of what I want.) I'm one who seems to need variety so I try to keep things spontaneous.

We shop weekly with a couple of trips to the neighborhood Whole Foods and the Farmer's Market in between for fresh produce, so I just keep a running list of what I need.

I live alone, so I eat according to my whims. :)

I shop the sales, stock up on meats (I have a chest freezer), frozen veggies, and dairy, and buy fresh veggies more often.

I portion out ground beef into foil-wrapped patties, and freeze them. I separate large packages of bone-in chicken breasts, wrap and freeze them individually, and separate large packages of chicken drumsticks into baggies of four each. One breast, one burger, or four drums could each be one meal, or I could cook several together in a larger batch.

I often buy large roasts, usually beef chuck or pork roast, and have them in the freezer to throw into the crock pot whenever. I probably use the crock pot once a week, cooking a large roast with veggies, which I'll eat for breakfast, lunch, and dinner until it's gone.

So, I generally don't plan my meals in advance, but I always have food available to cook quickly.

Depending on my level of preparedness, I'll also have homemade coleslaw, tuna salad, and boiled eggs in the fridge. That ebbs and flows with my moods. I'm in the mood for coleslaw nowadays, so I've been making it a lot lately.

I like a coleslaw that's more on the tangy, rather than creamy, end of the spectrum. Not too sweet either.

I never measure, but I mix mayo, white or apple cider vinegar, a drop or two of liquid Splenda, and lots of black pepper. If I had to guess, I'd say it's maybe three parts mayo to one part vinegar?

If you like celery seed, add some!

I just barely make enough to dampen all of the (store bought) shredded cabbage, because it'll break down and create more liquid as it is stored in the fridge. Beyond tasting, I don't even eat it until it's been in the fridge for at least a day, preferably two.

I mostly use the store-bought shredded cabbage, because shredding it myself is a pain in the ass.

I plan about five days out and keep a list of five to seven choices for dinner that we check off as we eat them. I generally let my husband pick between them (unless I'm tired -- then I just have him grill the meat while I toss veggies in the oven). I don't eat breakfast so that makes planning earlier, and if I run out of leftovers for lunch I keep a bag of chicken breasts in the freezer.

I don't really freezer cook. Nothing tastes as good to me after it's been frozen.

I also try to prep for the week on the weekend by making hard boiled eggs, roasting peppers, making a batch of ham/egg muffins, slicing vegetables, etc.

I live alone & eat pretty simply so all I have to do is make sure I have protein & veggies in the house.

I don't plan menus & I don't make a bunch & freeze. I sometimes make a big batch of something (a whole chicken, turkey breast, etc) and eat that for several days until gone. I don't need to eat something different for each meal or each day. I'd rather spend as little time as possible in the kitchen.

Lately I've been making single serving meals most of the time. It doesn't take long but I do need to remember to take things out of the freezer to cook.

I've seen food porn pics of Ntombi's cooking & I'm tempted to move in with her just for the food! I'm sure it would be worth the cross-country trip! :yummy:

Thanks! That sounds really good. I think I've probably been making it too sweet and missing the boat by not adding the pepper. That sounds just right.

I love good coleslaw.

I like to cook, but some weeks, I eat a cheeseburger with a fried egg on top and coleslaw for every meal. Right now, it's super ugly, but really tasty shredded pork roast with string beans and cabbage from the crock pot.

I'm an embarrassingly obsessive person so I plan the whole week out in advance. I go to the market on Sundays and buy a different meat or fish item for each meal of the week and a different veggie for each meal of the week. Then I go home and pre-cook my food for the week -- putting a meal portion of meat or fish into a tupperware container for each meal and measuring a portion of veggies into each container with the meat or fish. I cook my Sunday meals from scratch on Sundays, then I put 3 days worth of pre-cooked meals in the freezer for later in the week and put the first 3 days of pre-cooked weekly meals in the fridge.

I weigh and measure all of the food and seasonings as I'm cooking and I write the amounts on a post-it note and stick that on each container so that I can log the food into my tracking program before I eat it.

Yup, I've been performing this ritual for the past 10 months and I find it oddly comforting because I'm oddly obsessive.

Breakfast and lunch are the hardest for me since I eat those at work so I usually spend sunday preparing food for the week for those two meals. Dinner I don't unually think about until the evening before. But my freezer is always stocked with good meats so it is not hard. My husband is a carb loving vegetarian so we do have a lot of carb heavy foods in the house, but we have our own cupboards so I don't have to stare at them.

I plan my kids' meals for the week. But I don't plan for me. I planned very meticulously when I first started. Now, I'm more relaxed. I don't go off plan so I always keep foods I like around and just eat whatever sounds good for the day. I usually thi k about dinner the morning of if I need to take something out of the freezer, I do.

I plan to have things on hand to make a couple of options.

So we always have eggs, cheese, and cream. We keep burgers and Steak-umms and chicken breasts in the freezer. Veggies in the freezer and salad stuff in the fridge.

Each week I make something big. Egg/sausage bake for breakfasts, a roasted pork shoulder in the slow cooker, baked chicken thighs (depends on what is on sale). I plan to eat that a couple of days, but have enough flexibility that if my husband says "How about shrimp?" and we have shrimp in the freezer, I switch to make that instead.

My take-to-work lunches are pretty much the same, so I plan for those: bone broth and miso soup, salad with flax seed vinaigrette.

But beyond that, I don't make a menu plan.

I plan my meals for the week on Sunday morning. Then I make my grocery list and go shopping. Once I get home, I make a prep list and cook. Taking a couple hours on Sunday to do this keeps me on track all week.

I am specific in planning my breakfasts and lunches for the week, but for dinner I simply have a list of protein and veggie options so that I can decide daily what I am in the mood for. Same with snacks... I keep a couple of options on hand to have during the week.

I've been consistent with this routine for 13 months and it has helped my success tremendously.:up:

I work a weird schedule, so I cook lots of foods 1-2 days before I return to work. I keep a few servings of each thing in the fridge, and freeze several servings of each thing ( that I don't think we'll finish in the 1st 3 days ) for later in the week.

That gives us several meals we can make and mix and match protein and veggies....... and I always have string cheese, salad stuff, nuts, beef sticks, etc...... for snacks.
