Weight loss without ketosis
 
Is a 10 pound weight loss within 2 months of low carb eating without being in ketosis low or is that normal? I know it's different for everyone but I'm just wondering what it is usually.

That actually sounds pretty good to me, honestly. You have less to lose than a lot of people who are doing LC, and the closer you are to your goal weight the slower the weight will come off. For not being in ketosis 10 pounds in 2 months is pretty awesome... congrats! :)

Are you not trying to be in ketosis, or are you trying and thinking you're not succeeding? I'm just curious, because a lot of people who are trying to be in ketosis think they aren't when the sticks don't show positive, but first of all, the sticks aren't very accurate, and secondly, some people don't excrete ketone in their urine. So you can be in ketosis without showing a positive.

If you're not trying to be in ketosis, a ten pound loss within the first two months is very good, congratulations!

Initially, I wanted to be in ketosis just to experience it and see how it is. Sometimes, I'd get traces of ketones in my urine, but it would disappear as soon as it appeared. I also never experienced any of the symptoms usually associated with ketosis according to people, except for a single morning where my mouth had an acidic taste. Someone's explanation of my unsuccessful attempts of entering ketosis was me not consuming enough fat. I can't consistently eat enough fat everyday; I don't really know how everyone else keeps their fat protein ratio so high. So, I just gave up, and decided to just stay low carb. Either way, at the end of the day, even if I never entered ketosis, I still learned so much about the body, got into the habit of drinking a lot of water, can cook a little, and now it's so much easier to stay away from sugar. Would entering ketosis make me lose fat much faster? Also, I'm still using carbs right now for energy correct? Is the metabolism of someone in ketosis different than regular?

So the answer is, you don't know if you're in ketosis. None of those are good gauges. One does not need to consume large amounts of fat to be in ketosis, but keeping fats higher can help keep the protein moderate, which does help. Eating too much protein can sometimes cause the body to release enough insulin that weight loss can be slowed or stalled.


Yes, one burns fat faster in ketosis than not. The process of burning fat for energy is more consuming, so it takes more calories to do the same thing when your body is in ketosis. That's why people generally lose faster.

I've never been in ketosis, either by symptoms or by any measurable markers. As long as the weight comes (and stays) off, who cares? Seems to me you're doing really well. KUTGW!
