Why We Get Fat
 
I was feeling the need for some extra motivation, so I ordered Why We Get Fat.

A must have book to understand the science of weight. It was the first book that really opened my mind to why I got fat. Whenever anyone asked me about how I lost the weight I always recommend they read Taubes book.

It was a life-changing book for me. I knew LC was working, but this book explained why. It also explained why this way of eating is truly healthy. It helped me shift my focus away from this being a diet that I'd follow for a little while to this being a way of eating.

I'm part way through it. All makes sense so far.

I love the part where he says that if you want to make yourself hungry to prepare for a big meal you may cut your calories during the day and exercise to work up your appetite...
And if you want to lose weight...you also cut your calories and exercise...
I never thought of it that way!

I feel like I mention this in every post, but I read Why We Get Fat and started eating low-carb at my next meal. I was just blown away to realize I'd followed all this advice about how to eat healthy - when the science showed I should have been doing the opposite.

About the same for me. I watched Taubes for 1 hour an youtube one night 2 years ago, and cleaned out my kitchen the next morning. I couldn't believe how much sense it made!
I just got the book. I may not even read it, but bought it because I'm grateful for his presentations being available.

It is really well written and reads like a novel. You'll enjoy it.

My son saw the book today and said "Do you really need a book to tell you why you get fat?"
He is only 6 so I explained it as simply as I could...but yes, we do need a book!

Aw! How cute!! I personally haven't read this book but what everyone is saying here it seems very moving. Maybe I need to check it out. How many pages is it?

As long as you take it with a grain of salt. You do have to eat some carbs, and most of us just need to reprogram our metabolisms to the point of where we can accept a reasonable amount of carbs in the diet. Our ancestors most likely had access to carbs at least during part of the year, it was an easy food to collect. (ie. wild fruit and veggies, eggs, seeds, nuts and some grains, dairy). If you eat no carbs for years, you will likely waste away to nothing eventually.

WWGF is not a zero carb book although carbs are not a necessary nutrient.

I know someone who read wheat belly and the next day cut out all wheat products and went gluten free. Fine, that makes sense. But I asked her what she ate in terms of carbs. She said because she cut out most grains she pretty much lives on sugary foods and fruit. I'm not sure the book addresses the carb issue completely.

The WWGF diet plan includes two cups of leafy greens and a cup of other vegetables per day. It's hardly a no-carb diet.

If you are talking "Wheat Belly", he DOES say to avoid the special gluten free products at the store. Those are just as bad as regular products. So no, when she (I am assuming your friend is a woman) says she lives on sugary foods and fruit---that is not in the book! I don't know what she would consider sugary foods, but in the Wheat Belly cookbook xylitol is the preferred sweetener NOT straight up sugar and almond flour as well as coconut flour is what I see used. Oh, I have seen a recipe or 2 with garbanzo bean flour and flaxmeal. She (your friend) must be doing her own thing because Wheat Belly is more than just fruit and sugary foods.

I am reading a great book right now called the Diabetes Miracle which talks about how to manage your blood sugar. The type of diet that WWGF discusses also for some people would produce too low of an insulin response to be able to store fat and build muscle effectively. In the book, the author discusses that that type of diet should only be short term, otherwise the person will waste away to nothing. The author is Diane Kress. Although I don't agree with everything she says, it is worth a read for anyone doing a LC diet.

It would be interesting to hear her response to Richard Bernstein, MD, (Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution) who has always recommended a low-carbohydrate plan--and walks that walk, as a long-time diabetic himself.
