benign dietary ketosis is when your body switches from a carb-burning metabolism to a fat-burning metabolism. you can burn either dietary fat or body fat. you need to restrict carb intake to a certain level to achieve this (different for every person, but generally under 50g). ketones are the by-product of this activity.
the goal of being in ketosis is that fat burning is supposed to be less efficient for the body than carb burning, meaning you end up burning more calories just doing normal daily things. as well, many people see other benefits to fat burning, such as stable moods and energy, and needing less sleep.
