It seems more people are doing Atkins then South Beach?
 
I used to do South Beach. I still use their way of eating for the most part. I really do not follow any specific "Plan". I know Atkins is carb counting, high fat. And South Beach is not *really* low carb, but I think that South Beach is more liberal, and seems more balanced.

I think I need to stick with a plan though. I am not interested in the Paleo's or Primal diets. I eat wheat, and dairy.

And what is the point of the 2 week induction periods? Is that a must? Why not start in Phase 2 of South Beach or whatever Atkins calls it? Is it JUST to eliminate the cravins? Or is it because this is the only way to jump start your metabolism?

I think the induction phase is just a good way to get started, detox from junk, and get an all around jump start to your new WOE.

Induction is to make sure you get into ketosis, which is a part of Atkins, and not a part of South Beach. Once you're done with the two weeks, you slowly add new foods, one at a time, increasing your carb count, until you no longer lose weight, then you drop back down a level, so that you can continue to lose.

South Beach can be more balanced if you don't have carb sensitivities, but for some people, it is far too high in carbs and low in fat. I personally don't like that it discourages animal fats, hewing to old, discredited thinking.

I prefer staying in ketosis, eating high fat, moderate protein, very low carbs. It works for me.

If you haven't read DANDR, or Atkins 72, you can get it from the library.

Choosing an eating plan is an exquisitely personal matter. My impression of South Beach is that it promotes grains, demonizes saturated fat, and encourages the use of margarine. I'm comfortable with many low-carbohydrate plans, but I really don't consider the SBD much different from WW. It's not for me.

I've done South Beach in the past. I'm on Atkins now and feel more satisfied due to the higher fat and lower carbs.

To answer your question about the "induction" period of South Beach. My personal opinion is that Dr Agatson was just copying Dr Atkins in regards to Induction. As pointed out, there is no ketosis or apetite suppression from ketosis in the South Beach plan.

The two week induction on South Beach is just to kinda get you in gear and adhering to a strict plan and to kick start weight loss a little bit. You could certainly start in phase 2 of South Beach if you wanted to. You just may not lose weight as quickly as in the more strict South Beach Induction period.

In Atkins the induction period serves the important purpuse of getting your into ketosis, which usually happens over the first 3 days, ,and then getting adapted to ketosis, which takes a couple weeks. You then very slowly add in carbs, carefully monitoring how your body personally responds to the carbs to find your personal level of carb tolerance, starting with very low carb foods like berries and progressing to higher carb foods at the top of the carb "ladder" that Atkins outlines.

South Beach doesnt really do that, it just has you add in more foods and gradually slow down weight loss until you hit maintenance. It does serve the purpose of gradually adding in foods to teach you how to maintain eventually while enjoying a varied diet.

The second Atkins book is Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002), which is what I referred to as DANDR upthread. That's the one I follow, stricter than the more recent books, not quite as strict as the '72 version.

I never read the South Beach Diet book(s) so I might be totally off, but it always seemed that South Beach was a more conventional, publically acceptable version of low carbing that still appeased the "yay food guide" crowd, in a sense.

I personally liked Dr Atkin's New Diet Revolution the best, as it was actually written by Dr A (unlike the newer ones), but not as restrictive as the 1972 book. It has some modern updates with things that Dr A didn't know about, like... fibre.

I tried south beach diet but it was just to many carbs for me. Also to low fat. I have a book called Dr. Atkins new diet revolution, completely updated 3rd edition. I was wondering if this is the same book and if it was written by Dr. Atkins.

Yes, yours was written by Atkins. It's what is called DANDR, the 2002 plan.

Thanks emel, I couldn't tell when it said Michael Bernstein lead the team in the revision of the book. I'm glad to know that Dr. Atkins wrote it. I will check out 1972 plan. Years ago I had the paper back book which I believe was the 1972 book. Like a dummy I got rid of it haven't seen one around. You would think they would republish it. Btw I lost weight very well with that book.

SB is a good plan and it is your choice.

The reason there are seemingly fewer peop following SB is because they are at the beach instead of on their computer.

I have a friend who swears by South Beach. She lost 170 pounds about 7 years ago and has kept it all off. Obviously it does work for some people.

I chose Atkins because of the study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association last summer..

I didn't like SB because I don't like low-fat daily and wheat makes me sick but I'll be forever grateful to it because it led me to Atkins (which I've since modified to a more Primal WOE but still Atkins-compatible.)

I had great success on the Atkins 72... I bought the 2002 book & gave away my original 72 book. The 2002 plan didn't work for me... among others... So I bought the 1972 book again, online. (I see much of it is available here.)

I'm coming up on 2 weeks into restart of ATKINS 72... -9 to date. Because it works. I'm not hungry. My heartburn & acid reflux are gone... put the Gaviscone away!

Check your local Goodwill or local thrift stores....sometimes they have Atkins paperbacks for 50 cents to a buck :)

Good idea about the goodwill. :) I think I will check it out tomorrow. Also there is a used book store downtown, haven't been in there yet. I would love to find the 1972 book. I like having a book that I can go back to after I've read it.
