Question About Ketosis
 
Hi Low Carb Forum,

I'm interested in ketosis and low carb, especially for the effects on mood and cognition. In the past when I've tried to do a very low carb diet, a few days into it I have this weird anxiety thing happen. I get really anxious and panicked like I think I'm dying. Is this a normal part of ketosis or is it something else?

It is normal for some. Every body reacts differently. It will pass if you can push through. I feel anxious and feel like I wanna throw up for about a week after entering ketosis.

I get the feeling of intense rage, sesitivity to sound, and upper back pain. It lasts about 3 days for me.

Technically, I don't think it is actually the process of ketosis that causes the mood shifts, but rather as your body begins to manufactue enzymes for your liver to be able to handle more fat breakdown, it temprary uses up your tryptophan levels to make the enzymes. Unfortunately this temporary depletion of tryptophan cause us to have a seratonin shortage which also is made fom trptophan.

In sum, may want to substantially increase your tryptophan levels before and durring the entering of ketosis to minimize the depeletion time/effects.

Turkey is the first source that comes to mind, but I actually think there are better sources of tyrptophan. Also there are tryptophan supplements as well.

I guess this is a ymmv kinda thing.
I don't notice any emotional changes related to ketosis at all.
For those of you who have this experience, I'm glad that it passes.
Being in ketosis is enough of pain just keeping the odor issues in check.
If I had to deal with emotional distress it would be a total deal breaker.
