Anyone tried coconut oil in their tea?
 
I drink coffee sometimes, but I drink tea most days. English Breakfast, Irish Breakfast, Orange Pekoe, mostly strong black teas, usually with HWC and a drop of liquid Splenda. I also drink herbal teas, but I'm mostly thinking about the holder black teas in this case.

With all the talk of bulletproof coffee, I'm wondering if anyone has tried doing the same thing with tea?

Thoughts? Experiences?

Tibetans drink tea with yak butter in it, so why not? I'm fixin' to make some Scottish breakfast tea right now, so I'll be a guinea pig. :D

I tried it this morning, and I was disappointed. Of course, I'm used to putting heavy cream or half and half in my tea, and so the tea didn't taste the way I am used to ... but coconut oil didn't seem to "enhance the tea experience" by taking out the bitterness or otherwise improving the taste, for me. I'd rather get the coconut oil from cooking or eating coconut butter with a spoon, and use coconut milk creamer in place of dairy, if necessary to cut dairy. But tastes are very individual, so you can only tell for yourself if you try it.

Of course, I thought of it after I had already added HWC and splenda to my dinner tea, but I'm really curious.

I cook with CO, and I am not necessarily looking for more ways to get it in, I'm just curious.

Ok. Let me say first that I can't do CO in coffee. :sick: Neither can I do HWC. It just coats my mouth with an oil slick - gag.

So I made a two cup pot of tea and put CO in the first cup along with some milk and a little Splenda. Meh. Couldn't really taste any difference, but it left my lips greasy. Second cup got butter, milk and a little Splenda. :yummy: Still had greasy lips. :laugh: It's cold and stormy here tonight and the buttery tea felt warming and comforting in my tummy. Win!

I don't think I can take the extra calories on a regular basis, though.

I like it well enough in coffee--but then I'm not much of a coffee connoisseur. I've been making Bulletproof Coffee lately, and using an immersion blender to really blend it all in. Sweetened with stevia and a splash of cream it can get me through the morning.

But when it comes to tea I'm a bit of a snob :rolleyes: and can't stand the texture and taste of CO in my tea.

I put about a tablespoon in my coffee and then cream. I use cream only with the co because somehow masks the greasy slick on top of the coffee.

Well, I have been cutting out dairy, so I started using coconut cream from a can instead of cow juice cream. I read recently that there is 1 tbls oil in every 3 tbls of coconut cream, so really you could just use the cream if you didn't want the oily oil.

I drink CO in my rooibos tea (it is flavoured with vanilla). I add a couple of drops of liquid stevia, a TB of EVCO and then stir and sip, stir and sip, etc. I haven't tried to emulsify it, so can't say how that would work. I think you'd need something like cream or butter for that to work.

I prefer my BPC in the morning. I only drink the coconut oil in my tea if I need extra CO that day.

I have coconut oil in my tea every day, along with HWC - 1 Tbs of each and a shot of some flavored syrup. I drink from a mug with a lid on it, so I don't see the 'oil slick', but it doesn't bother me if I'm drinking out of an uncovered cup - I do it to keep from spilling on my way to work. I swirl my mug before each sip - it tastes like a yummy Starbucks-type of blended tea. Usually only the last few sips are... less enjoyable... because the tea has gone mostly cold and the oily taste is more pronounced.

Not coconut oil, but coconut milk is great in chai. I'll have to try the CO. There are tiny battery powered whisks that help blend CO into coffee, and that would work with the tea too of course. The Tibetans use special containers to froth the butter into their tea so it isn't just a slick on top.

I have a decaf coconut chai tea that I use it in with a little bit of HWC. I like it. Just like with coffee, you have to keep stirring. ;)

I used to have tea all the time with my coconut oil. I have not tried it with HWC though. I love the coconut oil in my tea and it was a great way to get it in daily :up:

I did it last night with my English Breakfast, and I enjoyed it! I won't do it all the time, because it does change the flavor, and I still it plain best, but maybe for the first cup of the day, it would get my body off to a good start. My calories are a bit lower than they should be right now, because I'm dealing with another issue, so this might be a good solution.

I also might try it in earl grey, which I drink without HWC.

Thanks so much for asking this question. I don't drink coffee and have been wondering about this. I don't like the oil slick on my tea that happens when I just add it to my tea, so I think I am going to try with the immersion blender to give it a shot.

I can't put co, butter, or anything oily in my coffee or tea because I hate the taste but I do love a quick breakfast of coffee and some coconut cream concentrate on the side with some nuts or coconut flakes.

I dont drink much tea...just dont care for it much. But I have tried coconut oil in my coffee and hated it.

I prefer my coffee with SF caramel torani syrup, and hwc.

I've been having coconut oil in my tea maybe every other day for a week now, and I'm glad I started. I don't bother with the immersion blender or milk frother, I just stir it in and yes, it ends up like an oil slick on top, but it doesn't bother me. Heck, my lips are probably more moisturized. ;)

Eventually, I'll break out the blender and see how that works out. I'll post the results if they're unexpected.

I have one of those tiny hand frothers--a battery operated whisk. I paid all of $3.99 for it at Ikea, and to keep the delicate wire from getting bent I invested a whole other dollar in a plastic toothbrush holder from the Dollar Tree to store it in.

I whisk the CO in my tea or coffee. If you froth it, it has a nice, pleasant froth instead of an oil slick and it tastes fine.

Just a little update: I did buy a frother by Aerolatte, from Bed, Bath, & Beyond for twenty bucks, and I like the results even more now. :) I drink my bulletproof tea almost every morning, and it allows me to move my first meal back by a couple of hours, which I appreciate. I'm not a bit morning eater, so this is just enough.

I still add the HWC and drop of Splenda, and about two teaspoons of virgin coconut oil.

I just ordered Artisana coconut butter from Netrition.com. Holy cow! This stuff is great! Very sweet. I also tried the coconut manna from another place, not nearly so good. Though, if you prefer it less sweet you might like it better. Its at least half as sweet...or less.

Just thought I would share. I like this much better than oil.

I really like it too, Dottie. Mine has a hard plastic travel case, which is convenient. It sits on the shelf with all my syrups.

Now I want one :p Next time I am at BB&B. Or better yet, I can ask my neighbor who is a District manager to bring me one home :) I am going out of town in 2 weeks, surely I need it by then!
