As a newbie, I am very confused about the many posts that refer to keeping calories at a reasonable number. As I read the menu plans for today, so many of them seem to be lower than what is recommended on other threads. Please help me to understand the importance of calories.

On the other hand we often do not mention how much oil/butter we use. Calories are important if you decide to track them, some can comfortably loose even without counting calories and I have done that for a long time but as goal approached it seemed always more needed to start counting.
