protein powder recommendations?
Hi there,
I'm trying to add more protein to my day and think that a protein shake would be a great way to do it! I got overwhelmed looking at the choices. Haa... So, what types/brands do you recommend and do you know a good place for different recipes? Thanks in advance |

Personally I use protein powders in my cooking more than I drink it. I really like designer whey brand that I find in my organic section of our Kroger store. Body Fortress was one I use to like but the carb count changed and now I am not sure about it. I really like Designer Whey plain and simple as the carbs are quite low on this one. But it isn't sweet at all

I really like the EAS Lean 15 Vanilla. It is lower in carbs and personally I like the taste more than others. I mix it with unsweetened almond milk which is only 30 calories per 8 oz and it makes a great low calorie/low carb shake.

I like Jay Robb vanilla whey protein the best. Blended with unsweetened almond milk and if my carb count can afford it a couple of frozen strawberries it taste good and is filling.

Optimum Nutrition casein powder!! Whey is quick digesting and is meant to refuel post workout. I'm always hungry an hour after I drink a whey shake.
Casein is slow digesting and keeps me full for hours. Bodybuilders like to drink it at night so they don't wake up in the middle of the night from hunger. |

I like Natural Factors Whey Factors, no rBGH, no added sugar, no artificial sweeteners, GMO free, tastes great, mixes easily.

Not being critical just asking a question. What are you guys using this stuff for? Why use this stuff as opposed to just grabbing a piece of meat? (Is is cost savings, ease of use, habit, or something else?)

Stevie, I have protein shakes in the morning while I am driving to school. A scoop of protein + cup almond milk + oz coconut oil holds me over from 8 AM-6 PM while I'm busy with school and away from home. Eggs, bacon, and kind of meat or protein would never hold me over that long.

My two favorites: Isopure makes great protein powder (I like chocolate the best, but also use vanilla, too. Usually I blend the vanilla with frozen fruit or sometimes peanut butter). My absolute favorite, however, is Synthrax Matrix mint cookie. It is FABULOUS - tastes like thin mint cookies! These are delicious and mix easily.

Huge fan of Jay Robb Vanilla Whey for shakes & sweets like LC donut holes, and Jay Robb unflavored for savory things like breads & pizza recipes. Great way to kill the grains AND sneak a little extra protein into the meal.

I love Syntrax Nectar. It's 0 carbs, mixes easily with water and has a great variety of flavors - the fruit flavors are great for a change from the standard chocolate, vanilla and strawberry - through, their chocolate truffle is great too!

I used Optimum Nutrition and Body Fortress whey protein for years. But, my doc has told me to quit dairy products, including the whey protein.
I researched alternatives; most seemed pretty expensive and I'm not sure that they are complete proteins. They also seem to be aimed at vegans. I wound up ordering some Carnivor Beef protein. It seems to offer a pretty good bang for the buck. I haven't gotten it yet, but I'll report back when I try it. |

I buy Nitrean+. It has 23 gms of protein and 3 carbs per scoop. I buy the vanilla and then change it up with sf syrups, cocoa, blueberries or peanut butter powder. No soy!!

I have several tubs of whey protein left but I will use those as a drink to have along with my meals, so that I won't be having the whey by itself... |

I Use Arbonne. They're vegan- No whey or soy. It's 20 grams of pea, cranberry, and rice protein per serving.. 13 net carbs for 2 scoops of the chocolate.

I use Primal Blueprint vanilla protein when I drink a shake. Made with coconut, stevia, and other 'whole' ingredients. Healthiest protein shake I could find but it costs *$80* for a big canister, so it is not budget friendly!!!

I use protein drinks because I'm not hungry when I first wake up, but I have medication I have to take with food. So I can manage to sip one of these down. I have also found that the vanilla torte makes an awesome lc mousse with cream. |

The Best I have found
A product called Syntha6 is fabulous!. I just had a lumbar spine fusion and was advised by my surgeon to include at least 100 grams of protein a day in my diet to help the fusion in my spine. Someone recommended Snytha6. It comes in a variety of flavors, but my favorite is Vanilla Ice Cream. Simply yummy!

I use a whey protein powder, mostly for recipes, but occasionally I'll drink some.
Reasons to use--- sometimes I don't feel like meat, or feel like something sweet, or have a little hunger before my meat meal is finished cooking. It would be better for me to order a stevia-sweetened brand next time I need some, but the EAS 100% whey is available locally, so that's what I grabbed. |
