Doctor Visit
 
Went to the doctor today and discovered that my cholesterol is 214, HDL is high at 60, but LDL is also high at 127. I'm concerned but the doctor didnt seem to be (total to HDL is 3.6). When I was at induction levels my blood work was great, but since raising carbs a little to maintain, not so much. Should i be concerned with these numbers?

Chapter 11 (I think) in Gary Taubes' Why We Get Fat is devoted entirely to the discussion of cholesterol. It is a great read and easy to follow. From what I remember, is that HDL is really the only thing used to assess heart attack risk for women (I forget if the ratio is still used for men more). If the HDL is too low that is bad. If HDL is high, then that is good (reduced risk). Worth checking out the chapter! :)

Triglycerides are most important in my understanding. What where yours? Perhaps that is why your doctor was unconcerned.

The guidelines for LDL cholesterol vary based on your other risk factors for heart disease. For eg, if you are an otherwise low risk, non diabetic, non smoker, an LDL of 127 is fine (i.e. its below 130). If you are diabetic or have several major risk factors for heart disease, the goal is now to get your LDL down to below 70, including the use of statin drugs if lifestyle modification doesnt work. Moderate risk patients have LDL goals of below 100 or below 130, depending.

(Note: just stating what your doctor would follow as standard medical guidelines, not trying to debate alternative views that would be against statins, etc. I think Gary Taubes believes otherwise than these guidlines!)

Thanks for the link. I don't have any risk factors for heart disease so i feel a little better about my numbers based on the chart.

Also, be aware that all LDL is not the same.

Once upon a time, we were taught that cholesterol was bad, period.

Then we learned that there were two types of cholesterol: HDL was good, LDL was bad.

Well, guess what? Turns out there's two kinds of LDL, too... One is bad, one is harmless.

If your doctor is aware of this (ie: of the current research), he'll be placing more weight on your trigliceride/HDL ratios than on your raw LDL numbers. Sounds like yours knows what he's doing. ;)

I've been maintaining for over a year. For the six months I was losing weight, I was at 20g of carbs today. I'm now maintaining at 60-65 carbs per day. The extra carbs are from higher carb vegetables and yogurt; no processed food or anything.

Maybe you should be retested. Your triglycerides are within the normal range but on the high end. Most people eating low carb for the length of time that you have bee, will have much lower #s.

I checked 3 sites---webmd, heart dog org, and mayo clinic.

your total is 'mildly high', 14 points away from 'desirable'.
LDL is 'above optimal' about 15 pts away from 'near optimal', and 27 pts away from 'optimal'.
Triglycerides should be below 150, so you're good there.
And your HDL is optimal. 60 is right on the mark for where you want to be.
HDL helps remove LDL. So even though your LDL is not quite optimal, you have good HDL to keep things moving.

My guy described it that it is a train with freight cars. HDL is the cars. We load the LDL into them and they move on down the track and get removed.
So you have a little too much LDL but plenty of 'cars' of HDL to move your LDL 'freight'.

When I was at 20 carbs a day, my numbers were fantastic. Now that I've added some carbs to maintain my weight, that has changed.

Cholesterol seems to be one of the factors that is being 're-visited' as a health risk.
I suspect that there is much more to it that just high and low numbers.
Time will tell.

Also keep in mind that they're finding that the ratios between your numbers may mean more than the numbers themselves.

Your HDL/CHo ratio and the HDL/LDL ratios are good.
