Butter In Coffee

I drink coffee in the morning and do not eat breakfast. I've been reading about "Bulletproof Coffee," basically putting unsalted butter in your coffee in the morning instead of cream. It is supposedly very smooth and creamy and delicious. But I want to hear some opinions from real life people who've had it. What do you think about the taste? The benefits?

Edit to add: I also read that it's important that you use grass-fed butter. Something about cows that are fed a corn or soy based diet do not produce butter with the same fats present. Thoughts?

There have been several threads on it already. If you do a search, you'll find opinions posted.

I love BPC!

I drink one every morning at around 6.30AM before I head off to work. I don't eat breakfast, so this is my breakfast.

I make mine in my Aerocino (milk foamer).
I put 1TB of Kerrygold unsalted butter, 1TB of EVCO and then fill up the cannister and whizz. My coffee is yummy and keeps me satisfied till between noon and 2 PM.
It tastes nice and creamy, no oil floating on top.

I just tried it a couple days ago and love it! I use the same recipe as Mimosa, but I use regular butter. The taste with the regular butter is fine for me but I cannot compare having not used the grass-fed stuff. I used a scoop of unsweetened protein powder today to see how it would taste and it was just as good with a protein kick. I use a blender to make mine. It has a staying power with me; keep me full until noonish or so. Give it a 'whirl' so to speak!

I make my bpc like this:
2 c hot coffee, 1 tbs butter ( I use just normal butter), sometimes I add a tsp of coconut oil too. I then add a scoop of vanilla whey powder then crack an egg on top. I make sure I have the magic bullet ready to go as the egg will only sit on the powder for so long and you dont want it sitting in the hot coffee for too long as it could start to cook a bit. Made this way keeps me full for the whole morning and even into the afternoon!

I love bulletproof coffee; it gives me so much energy and helps to keep me full! I use a regular cup of your favorite coffee, 1-2 tablespoons of Kerry gold butter (Ive used both salted and unsalted can't taste the difference), and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil. I also add in some sugarfree carmel syrup to sweeten it! The coffee is so creamy and rich!

I have coffee(decaf), 2 T Heavy cream, 1 T coconut oil...this is the base I use every day

At times I will add:
splenda 1-2 packets (if I am feeling a sweet tooth)
SF flavored syrup (then usually no splenda)

I have not tried the butter or egg, but I want too when I get an immersion blender.

Butter from grass-fed has a slightly better (higher) ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. But save your money, the difference is small. One serving of GF butter contains 120 mg of Omega 3, and 219 mg of Omega 6. A 4 oz serving of salmon contains 1,700 mg of Omega 3 and 30 mg of Omega 6.

Before BPC I was having up to a tbl of CO in my coffee. The CO turns from a solid into a liquid just fine but does not mix in very well. It leaves a 'layer' of CO on top of my coffee, which, frankly I do not mind because I like the taste of CO. However, when blended in a blender or such device the coffee and CO, butter, etc. becomes mixed without the separation. Good Luck!

I never get it online. It's all over the place, Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, most supermarkets in my area, any vitamin store such as GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, and more.

If I don't have a Bullet, will the butter and coconut oil still melt in the coffee or should I nuke it first? I have never put butter in my coffee but I am thinking about it...

It will melt, but it won't stay mixed. The fat will float to the top. I don't mind it, but some people don't like it.

I've had BPC for breakfast the past few days and am finding that I can drink it on the way to work (8:45ish) and feel fine until lunch time.
This is miraculous for me because I've been frantically, chronically HUNGRY for months. (And whining about it here a lot! lol)
I seem to do better with the 300-ish calories in BPC than I do eating 500 calories worth of eggs/sausage/cheese. I can normally eat a 500 calorie breakfast at 8:30 and be very hungry again at 10am. (I get up at 5am to ride my horse before work every day.)

I make my BPC with 2 tablespoons of regular unsalted butter and one tablespoon of coconut oil. I put it in my blender with 16 oz of coffee.

Me too - chronically hungry - I've been reading all these posts and I'm ready to try it. I almost always wake up hungry so it will be interesting to try it. I drink coffee on my drive to work at 5:30 am and eat something around 6:30 - maybe I won't be so hungry when I get to work.

Here in Florida, I can find big jars of Coconut Oil in Costco. (This was NOT the case in California.)

Any health-food store will likely have it, too.

When we started this, around here, we initially drank so much of it (ie: our bodies were screaming for that CO!) that we over did it, and made ourselves sick. So be warned: Back off on the CO on successive cups, if you drink it throughout the day!!

My first cup of the morning has 2 eggs, some HWC, and about 1 TBS of CO. Whip that in the immersion-blender with just enough coffee to melt the CO, then top it up when I take the blender out.

Only the first cup has the eggs. And later cups, I'll cut back on the CO. For my husband, I'll skip the egg and add a touch of unsweetened cocoa powder. (NOTE: If I'm going to the gym, I may have 2 cups in the morning. Otherwise, those "later cups" are happening around lunch time.)

Thanks you all for the responses! I don't have a magic bullet but I do have one of those stick blenders so I'm going to zap it with that to get it creamy. I bought some unsalted butter this evening so I'm ready to go. It seems odd to put butter in coffee but then again butter is just churned cream

Well, I tried it this morning. Tastes pretty much the same as having cream in there. I only put in 1 tbsp butter since it's my first time, I'll see how I do and then maybe put in 2 tomorrow. It's hard for me to really tell how I like it though because the only coffee I have in the house this morning is instant Starbucks which I don't like much anyway

That's awesome that the salted kind tastes okay. I can get that so much cheaper (costco) than the unsalted.

We have it at our costco here in san diego, nutiva brand.

I think I may have to try this, too. I just packed up my coffee maker yesterday bc I was having too much HWC with my coffee and too many calories. But if I can get some kerrygold and some CO in there, I'll call it health food.

I tried the butter and coconut oil in my coffee this morning along with my SF syrup and I was truly surprised! I don't have a bullet or anything else to help mix it, so I nuked it in the microwave for a bit and then stirred in my coffee. It was pretty good!

Good to know you don't have to blend it. I have always wanted to try this. I love my coffee and I love butter and I love coconut oil Might try this in the morning. How long did you last with it? I would love it to make me not hungry for a long while.

PS--are you in the Myrtle Beach area or Charleston? We love to summer in Edisto. I am smack dab in the middle of the state--Columbia.

Well, this was my first day trying it so I also ate 2 pcs of sausages when I got to work, but I lasted until 1:00 and wasn't really hungry then. I was cautious about putting the butter and coconut oil in so I only added a little. I will use more tomorrow.
I am about and hour from Myrtle Beach. Close enough to enjoy it but far enough away to stay out of the commotion during peak tourist season. Columbia is about 2 hrs from me. Actually my husband just got back from Columbia. He was up there taking classes for his job. Glad to meet someone else in SC!

I dip a spoonful of CO out of the jar and set the spoon in my cup then put it in the Keurig to make the coffee. The CO is always melted when the cup of coffee is done. I add a little liquid Splenda and some heavy cream. I love the slick of CO on the top. I eat just a little something with it (need something in my stomach to take morning meds) and I can usually last until lunchtime. I need to get some Kerry Gold and try it, too. Cant' handle the idea of an egg though.

froggy--that is funny. You can tolerate the oil slick but not the egg LOL. I have eggs in my protein shake all the time. I can picture that egg in my coffee, but not the CO. I tried co in my tea and loved it, but somehow the idea of co in coffee just isn't a good one to me. We all have our tolerances don't we??

What butter do you have? I have some Kerrygold in the fridge right now. Thank goodness Publix has it. I can get it easily here.

You must be in Florence?
