A ketosis side effect question...

I stink!

I know that ketosis can make one's breath a little nasty, but what about one's sweat and pee? LOL Sorry for the TMI but sheesh. I smell metallic and strong and it's a little gross. I'm drinking a lot of water/green tea so I know I'm not dehydrated.

Granted, I'd rather be a little stinky than fat...but I'd really rather not be either!

Anyone else have this side effect of ketosis? Or am I the single stinky low carb friend?! :dunno:

So is this standard while in ketosis even after a while?

Dottie 01-29-2013 05:34 AM

Yes, ketones find a lot of ways to leave your body. Fluids are the easiest lol.
Try eating some parsley or taking chlorophyll tablets, that can help.

MY wife used to tell me that she could smell the odor of ketosis "coming out through my pores"...pretty damning eh? LOL
I suppose it can lessen over time. At least she's not complaining as much :sing:

I'm glad you posted this. I got home from the gym and my clothes smelled so strong of ammonia i thought my cat had an accident. I hope the people around me couldn't smell me.

Bamboozled 01-29-2013 12:44 PM

I don't find that I smell different but my breath definitely does. I was hoping keto breath stopped after some point but it is still going strong.

creseis 01-29-2013 01:14 PM

drink more water!

The only change in my diet has been that I added more green leafy veggies. I did this after reading articles by Dr. Terry Wahls and seeing her amazing story on youtube.
So there are two possiblilites I suppose.
first, is that the increased carbs in the greens (spinach, kale, collards etc.) have taken me out of ketosis...or
second that all the chlorophyll from the greens have mitigated the ketone smell.
I do know that I was losing weight faster without the added greens, but I feel stronger and more energetic since adding them. In short, I feel healthier so I'm sticking with it.

creseis 01-29-2013 05:45 PM

Interesting... did you read anything about the mechanism of how chlorophyll reacts with ketones to change them into something else? Is that what happens? Or is there some other related reaction that synthesizes something that breaks down the ketones to something less stinky?

creseis 01-29-2013 05:49 PM

oh duh.. I actually did a study with chlorophyll (as a productivity marker for marine algae) and I should know that chlorophyll a is a ketone. I'm going to get to the bottom of this!

bee_a_queen 01-29-2013 05:58 PM

Wow! Yes! My work claimed they thought I had been drinking on the job I smelled so funky. It did not help that my boss disliked me. It was NOT funny, as I am a teacher but I did find chlorophyll tablets helped. My job was slightly more important than my carb count so I did up those as well. It was horrifying...especially since I rarely even drink. The "fruity alcohol" smell was a tough side-effect.

Humph, I think carb eaters smell funky - all yeasty and kind of 'off'. However, I would never let on to one of them as I think this would be the height of rudeness.

Hmmm, now I'm wondering if I'm in ketosis or not, I may have to pick up some stix, I don't smell any body odor or breath odor... but I am losing so, hmmm

Mimosa23 01-30-2013 12:41 AM

I find if I drink enough fluids, I don't stink as much.

Sweat has a more pungent odour, pee smells stronger and my breath... Well..... Anyway, drinking enough will help most of the smelliness!

Some days I don't drink enough, and I definitely smell myself, so it serves as a good reminder, LOL!

I can imagine alot of people after being told that they smell will drop LC
like a hot potato

My goodness, I know what you mean about stinky breath! I, and everyone I know, has INCREDIBLY stinky breath when we are hungry. My breath is absolutely completely totally atrocious when I'm hungry.

Me Smelly too!

Starting about a week ago, Ive been in Ketosis for 7 weeks. I noticed my deoderant is not working. I though I might be pregnant! I dont notice an ammonia smell it just seems like increased BO! Is that Ketosis too?

DlaneyLynn 07-02-2014 01:54 PM

I seem to go through phases of stinkiness. For breath, I put a few drops of peppermint essential oil in my water and swish it around my mouth with every drink. It helps a lot.

Slinky 07-02-2014 05:12 PM

I was laughing with a guy at the gym about this today. He was kind of far from me but I could smell him and he reeked....
Ummmm, nope it was me!! Egads. Thank goodness it's the gym and I sort of blended in.

Yellobrix 07-07-2014 08:58 AM

I have found that early in ketosis, the smell is stronger. As I become keto adapted, the odor goes away. Just give it some time, and you should see an improvement. Some people also notice that their test strips no longer turn purple.

maximumdensity 07-10-2014 02:40 PM

I was doing some on line research on ketosis and foung that if you are eating more protein than you need it can make your breath etc, smell worse than the standard keto....

I also used to use tumeric as one of my supplements, but it made me smell horrific so I gave it up......I wonder if supplements contribute to the keto oder? may not be keto at all might be too much vitamin?????

Mr_Geiri 07-10-2014 03:14 PM

The smell from my sweat and breathe are much less now that I have reached my goal compared to the first few months. I'm not any less in ketosis though I think it's just a part of the adaption process. I've made very little changes to the diet so it's not that.
