A ketosis side effect question...
I stink!
I know that ketosis can make one's breath a little nasty, but what about one's sweat and pee? LOL Sorry for the TMI but sheesh. I smell metallic and strong and it's a little gross. I'm drinking a lot of water/green tea so I know I'm not dehydrated. Granted, I'd rather be a little stinky than fat...but I'd really rather not be either! Anyone else have this side effect of ketosis? Or am I the single stinky low carb friend?! :dunno: |
So is this standard while in ketosis even after a while?
|
Yes, ketones find a lot of ways to leave your body. Fluids are the easiest lol.
Try eating some parsley or taking chlorophyll tablets, that can help. |
MY wife used to tell me that she could smell the odor of ketosis "coming out through my pores"...pretty damning eh? LOL
I suppose it can lessen over time. At least she's not complaining as much :sing: |
I'm glad you posted this. I got home from the gym and my clothes smelled so strong of ammonia i thought my cat had an accident. I hope the people around me couldn't smell me.
|
I don't find that I smell different but my breath definitely does. I was hoping keto breath stopped after some point but it is still going strong.

drink more water!

The only change in my diet has been that I added more green leafy veggies. I did this after reading articles by Dr. Terry Wahls and seeing her amazing story on youtube.
So there are two possiblilites I suppose. first, is that the increased carbs in the greens (spinach, kale, collards etc.) have taken me out of ketosis...or second that all the chlorophyll from the greens have mitigated the ketone smell. I do know that I was losing weight faster without the added greens, but I feel stronger and more energetic since adding them. In short, I feel healthier so I'm sticking with it. |
Interesting... did you read anything about the mechanism of how chlorophyll reacts with ketones to change them into something else? Is that what happens? Or is there some other related reaction that synthesizes something that breaks down the ketones to something less stinky?
|
oh duh.. I actually did a study with chlorophyll (as a productivity marker for marine algae) and I should know that chlorophyll a is a ketone. I'm going to get to the bottom of this!
|
Wow! Yes! My work claimed they thought I had been drinking on the job I smelled so funky. It did not help that my boss disliked me. It was NOT funny, as I am a teacher but I did find chlorophyll tablets helped. My job was slightly more important than my carb count so I did up those as well. It was horrifying...especially since I rarely even drink. The "fruity alcohol" smell was a tough side-effect.
|
Humph, I think carb eaters smell funky - all yeasty and kind of 'off'. However, I would never let on to one of them as I think this would be the height of rudeness.
|
Hmmm, now I'm wondering if I'm in ketosis or not, I may have to pick up some stix, I don't smell any body odor or breath odor... but I am losing so, hmmm
|
I find if I drink enough fluids, I don't stink as much.
Sweat has a more pungent odour, pee smells stronger and my breath... Well..... Anyway, drinking enough will help most of the smelliness! Some days I don't drink enough, and I definitely smell myself, so it serves as a good reminder, LOL! |
I can imagine alot of people after being told that they smell will drop LC
like a hot potato |
