Really?? There is wheat in my Bouillon!!
I have to get better about reading labels.
No wonder I have constant binge twinge. No wonder I have been 'white knuckling" each day. I drink bouillon at will during induction. I drink a lot of it. I like the bouillon better than broth as it can be more intense and more salty. I have examined my hand written journal that tracks every single bite of food since Jan. 15 looking for why I haven't enjoyed the benefits of ketosis I expected. I could find no reason till I read the Bouillon label. Good grief: I won't bore you with the whole label, but MSG, wheat, soy.......etc. also the nutrition facts say sugar: 0 HOWEVER the second ingredient on the list is ~ wait for it ~ SUGAR. Geesh Sometimes you can't win for losin'. I surely am learning some hard lessons this time around. Onward.

I believe that the FDA doesn't have to list the carbs on a food label if the amount is less than 1 gram per serving. I guess they think that you are only going to eat one serving. So if your bouillon has .75 carbs per serving and you are drinking 5 cups a day, there is an extra 3.75 carbs per day or 26.75 carbs per week.
I remember this discussion in previous years about Diet Mountain Dew. One of the ingredients is orange juice, yet it has zero carbs. Ok...................... Sorry your bouillon deceived you ![]()

At least you figured out the mystery. I don't trust anything anymore, especially if it says 0 carbs. I instantly go to the ingredient list at that point to see what's REALLY in it.

What brand is this?
Wheat is insidious. It is in practically everything. Twizzlers, even. Just a heads up - it is also in Slim Jims!! Of course, I found this out 3 days after buying (and opening) the 100 count box in my office. Ugh. |

Buffy posted this awesome chicken broth recipe on our December NK thread. You might like it as well as the bullion you have been drinking. I've edited the original post to cut out everything but the recipe.

That foamy stuff that forms when I make broth just grosses me out. Maybe I do it incorrectly, but I am with you. I just like bouillon. But I pitched it and will figure something out. |

You didn't answer the question on brand, but I have the following:
Golden Kettle Chicken (225 count from Costco) Weis Beef (25 count) Wyler's Chicken (25 count) ...and none of them have wheat in them. Really glad you brought this up so I could check. 1 carb each from sugars - did not know that!! |

It was a store brand............Shur Fine? I pitched it so can't go look it up as the garbage is out for pick up this morning.
I am on SS so I usually save money where I can. I am learning to read read read. Good to know that Wylers has no wheat. I will try to adjust to boxed broth. Trader Joes has a good one (so my son tells me) but TJ's is a 50 minute drive for me. I will figure this out! Thanks for caring!! |

What was most interesting is that the Costco brand had about 1/4 the number of ingredients than Wyler's.
Who knew there was such a disparity in bullion of all things?? |

It is incredible the amount of simple foods that have wheat, soy or sugar (or all three) in some form in them.
Even though I work a full time job and have a commute as well, I try make everything from scratch because of this. So frustrating! The other day I was reading the label of some organic mayo and it had wheat syrup in it... What in heaven's name is wheat syrup?????? And what is it even doing in organic mayo????? Really, the mind boggles.... ETA: can you get the bouillon concentrate from Knorr or Maggi? It looks like a jelly, and you dissolve it in water. They have no wheat in them, and are pretty good for the other ingredients too. Great flavour, and they come in beef, chicken and vegetable....

Do you skim the foamy stuff off? It's a pain, but will remove the impurities and your broth will taste much better.

Better Than Boullion is one of the best shelf brands, but they do indeed use some sugar in their broth. A negligible amount, if you're consuming one or two servings a day. But I'd count a gram of carbohydrate per two servings to account for it, and if you're highly sensitive to wheat/sugar, even in the tracest amounts, better to make it from scratch yourself

If you are primarily concerned about wheat, there are gluten free (i.e. wheat free) products available. Try doing a google search for Minors soup base, and then look under the gluten free products on the website. (full disclosure, there is still the speck of cornstarch or other non-perfect ingredients in there... it will be in ANY soup base or boullion)
Also, if you take broth and boil it down to concentrate it, ,you can get it too taste more rich and salty, which is the flavor you are seeking. Dr Atkins DID allow for boullion on Induction, btw... you just have to include it in the carb counts. Last edited by Strawberry; 01-28-2013 at 06:38 PM.. |

I think the government should be required to put the TRUE nutrition facts on the label. None of this <1 and fake 0 BS. In Europe, they go down to the DECIMAL point on their labels. At least that way we would know HOW MUCH sugar or wheat was in our food. The way it is now, we can only guess. I hate bacon that says "0 carbs" yet "brown sugar" is the 2nd ingredient. 0? I don't think so!!!!! Our government is not doing a very good job on this IMHO.

It is in EVERYTHING! Really disgusting when you start to see how much crap and wheat is in all of our food. It's why I make everything from scratch.
