Tell me about apricots
Can anyone give me a good reason not to eat apricots during OWL (Atkins?). At about 4g carbs per fruit, I would like to include them as an occasional ingredient - have found a lovely recipe for Moroccan lamb which requires them, but I can't find any mention of them in the acceptable foods list. I'm pretty sure this is only because they're not exactly a popular fruit, but wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything before I eat them! The recipe actually calls for dried apricots, but those are much higher in sugar than fresh, which is why I was going to use fresh (3 apricots in a meal for 2, ie 6g carbs each serving).
Please chime in if you can think of a reason I shouldn't do this!

As long as you are calculating the carbs into the total- I don't see the problem. Apricots are slightly lower on the Glycemic index ( although higher than berries which usually come first)

As long as you pay very close attention to what happens to your appetite I think it would be fine to do a little experimenting.
If you were sitting down to eat them alone (with out fat or protein) on an empty stomach then I would be more concerned. You never know they may be just fine for you at this point. I can't wait for the day when I will be having these kind of contemplations! Good Luck! |

One of my favorite fruits! Glad you reminded us of how low in carbs they are, eaten in small quantities of course.

love them, but never on an empty stomach. Keep a couple of jars in cupboard- no sugar added of course. And when in season, I buy and stuff with raw cashew butter, herbed goat cheese, etc. Also grilled with Mac oil and balsamic. Delish in a salad with avocados, blue cheese, and grilled steak. Ooh....come on summer!!! |

Remember that the "acceptable foods list" is only for induction. It doesnt mean that those are the only acceptable foods for the rest of your life! Dr Atkins wanted you to add in fruits and higher carb veggies as you progress towards reaching your weight loss goal and maintenance. I enjoy incorporating things like fruits into savory dishes, where its just a small amount of fruit that lends a pleasant sweetness to the overall dish.
Your morroccan chicken sounds really yummy! I love apricots. |

weigh your apricots though. often the calorie/carb listings are for a fruit size WAY smaller than what's typical in grocery stores today.
