Movie Theatre Snacks
This has to be one of the hardest things for me - going to a movie and not munching on something!
What snacks do you smuggle into the movie theater? |

Old pro at this one:
A small bag of mixed nuts...I like the Nutrition heart-healthy ones that come prepackaged (gives me carb count/nutritional info & complete portion control) Also like to take a couple of squares of Lindt 90% Dark Cocoa chocolate. I nibble at that chocolate, let it melt in my mouth, and savor it..I can make those two squares last me a good 10-15 minutes of chocolate enjoyment If it's near a meal time I'll also bring a mozzarella string cheese. The trick is to make yourself wait until at least 45 minutes into the movie...drink bottled water until snack time. --OR-- Time your movie viewing for right after you eat a big meal. Then you may get by with just a bottled water.

Honestly, this is the one area where I just go for it and have the popcorn. Doesn't seem to hurt me all that much and I only occassionally go to the movies, so....

I don't smuggle snacks.
Sometimes I take water. I can live 2-3 hours w/o eating & always have. |

![]() I wish I were strong enough to NOT eat like DiamondDeb!! Seriously! I have a HUGE purse JUST for smuggling in stuff.... I have brought beef jerky, almonds and/or macadamia nuts, pork rinds (sometimes with the butter/cinnamon/splenda to make em taste like taco bells twists), water - or, on a rare occasion, diet soda ... yep. cant think of anything else |

Walking Woman - I think it's the fact that there are so many smells that trigger my saliva glands that a show (lasting anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours) is pushing the tempting button a little too hard.
![]() So I am always glad to chew slowly on jerky or such when I hear crunching from beloved popcorn from family or others around me - combine with the smell?? Oh hell - I'm done!. UNLESS I have backup |

I've never cared much for snacking at the movies, probably because of the noxious odors from the popcorn. I dislike the stuff, had a bad experience at the circus as a child. Just the smell turns my stomach and kills my appetite. I'm lucky I guess. lol

Part of going to the movies is getting to eat popcorn! I'm able to handle a small without any blood sugar problems, so I get it.
I don't HAVE to get anything, though. I've been to plenty of movies with no snacking at all, and it's fine. |

I am a food addict, plain and simple. For me I can't even imagine going to the theater right now and being bombarded by the smell of popcorn, neverending soda fountain, and the giant boxes of candy. I think having a thread of "good options" is a wonderful idea for those of us that have a harder time resisting. Thanks for the great ideas!

I like sunflower seeds, macadamia nuts. I will smuggle and don't feel bad about it at all. Cannot eat what they sell. Do buy their diet cokes though.

@Kris ~ I am also a food addict (yep; diagnosed too) ... I could tell my kids we'll rent a movie or get something off Netflix - but seriously - what does a kid want? To see a movie on a HUGE screen - why should my addiction ruin their fun when I can do something to help control the urges and allow them to see a wonderful movie as it should be seen?
I was once told that a food addict had it worse than an alcoholic because an alcoholic can survive without their addiction where as a food addict has to take the lion out of the cage three times a day and put it away unscathed ... not sure how true that can be but it's damn close on some days. Here's to the day I can walk into a place and the smells that tease me not so so anymore!!

I was never a big eater at movies to begin with and almost never had popcorn (too much and too salty) but since being low carb the smell does make me crave it. So I take pumpkin seeds (I harvest them from Halloween pumpkins). And sometimes I splurge and buy a diet Coke.
I don't feel right about sneaking something they do have, but if they can't sell any low carb snacks I don't feel bad about bringing my own. We had a family friend who owned a movie theater and he told us he made NOTHING on the movie admissions--all his profit was in the popcorn. |

I like guacamole, pork rinds, salsa, and light beer when I watch a movie. Since decent home theater gear has become affaordable, I can see no reason to watch movies in a theater. I also like to be in control of the volume, and being able to start, stop, or watch a scene again.

I seriously don't see anything wrong with snacking...there are many of us who do better with small meals, spread out throughout the day & evening...which is essentially what snacking is: a small meal. I tend to eat a bit less at regular meals, naturally. Some metabolisms are just geared that way, IMO. It is perfectly possible to adjust eating to fit our own metabolisms and still lose weight at a good steady pace, the key of course is to choose the right foods, in the right quantities. Your metabolism may be such that frequent eating triggers more appetite...in which case, sure, "break the habit" of snacking. But I really think for some people, it is NOT a habit to be broken...it's the way our bodies function best. If you can take-or-leave snacking, or really don't feel any need for it...then you're probably responding to your own metabolism functions. That, to me, is a big part of successful weight control: finding what works for your self...and following it. Last edited by catne; 01-10-2013 at 08:15 AM.. |

What about eating dinner before and then you'll be full and snacks won't be tempting.
Just please don't be the person that sneaks in hardboiled eggs! I was ready to walk out from the smell when this woman in front of us was chomping on what seemed like an endless supply of eggs. |

I don't go to a movie hungry and that really helps with the sensory issues and I guy a large coffee and sip on that. I hadn't thought of smuggling in cream but think that is a great idea and going to do that next time!!

I pretty much stopped going to the movies when I went low carb for this very reason. I just felt like I didn't have the willpower to abstain from the popcorn. But then again, with the availability of Amazon and Apple TV/iTunes I think we would have eventually cut back on going to the movies, regardless.
We have a theater chain here in IL called iPic Theaters (I think they have them in CA and AZ as well). Super comfy fully-reclining chairs, reserved seating and waitress service for dinner/drinks during the movie. I can always find something on the dinner menu that is either low carb, or can be modified to be eaten low carb. When we do venture to the movies, we usually frequent iPic. The free small popcorn that comes with the price of the ticket must be declined ![]() About once every month or two, I make popcorn on the stove at home, using organic popcorn and coconut oil. Blows the movie popcorn out of the water . . .
