Can I eat an apple?
 
I'm not on induction and only have about 10lbs left to lose... :)

All I can think about is eating an apple!!!

for some reason I have been craving them like crazy!

If I eat one, and smear it liberally with almond butter, will the fat help to reduce the blood sugar impact of the apple? Or is there anything else I can eat with it that will help?

Or is eating an apple going to sabotage me? I don't binge, but sometimes I cheat by having a bite or two of non low carb food and that puts my weight loss off for a day or so :annoyed:

Right now I'm more concerned about steadying blood sugar and avoiding becoming diabetic than about the size of my butt... so can I eat this apple and not wreck my blood sugar?

I'm doing low glycemic and apples are pretty low glycemic (havn't eaten any yet though) unsweetened applesauce is also low glycemic but for strict low carb I really don't know.

That's a difficult question to answer - if you're not on induction and are on Atkins OWL, then an apple would be acceptable if you factor your day's eating with that apple and stay within your carb budget.

Yes, fat will help reduce the blood sugar impact.

As far as an apple sabotaging, you need to know yourself and how you'll react.

Perhaps half an apple, as a compromise to test the waters if you know that you can stop. I think what's key - what you'll eat AFTER the apple later in the day and the next day. Is moderation possible or are you an all or nothing type of person.

My daughter is a type 1 diabetic and requires insulin whenever she eats anything. She eats apples. But will NOT, ever eat one without a fat or protein. I have her eat peanut butter (she dislikes almond butter) or a cheese stick with it. Then she has to do insulin. So you can have an apple if you are a diabetic. But you have to decide if you have the carb allowance for it! What plan are you following? And one apple doesn't make a person diabetic. Apples are higher on the sugar ladder than strawberries (my favorite fruit!) so I don't go out and have an apple. But then again I don't dream about them either!!! LOL.

I agree that pairing with a fat is the best idea to minimize the blood sugar impact. Instead of eating the whole apple, how about 1/4 apple, cut into thin slices with the almond butter?

did you have tests that say you are on the verge of diabetes? I assume you think your blood sugar levels are in peril somehow?


eat 1/2 the apple and smear with almond butter :) even a quarter like suggested.

we 'dream' about taste and food, but once you have it, you probably don't even need to have the whole thing

Of course you can eat an apple. Yes, they have some sugar, but apples are not junk! As I always say: America is not fat because we're eating too many apples.

I love to eat them with peanut butter.

FYI: I eat a fair bit of fruit (probably too much) and my weight is not out of control.

I have eaten apples all through my weightloss and they have never caused me a problem. I just add them into my daily carb allowance. I slice them and dip them in softened, sweetened cream cheese. YUM!

I'm diabetic 2. And last months AC1 came back at 5.6.

I eat 2-3 apples a week with peanut butter, which I'm going to switch to almond butter the next shopping trip. I eat half the apple, and later eat the other half.....

I am still losing weight. Yesterday I had an apple for breakfast w/a sausage patty, lunch was black eye peas w/bacon/onions, and dinner I had a shake made w/frozen berries, almond milk, ground flax, and chia seeds, and splenda to sweeten....I'm down a pound down this morning...

Like everyone else says, you can have an apple....just make sure to count it in your daily carb level. one small apple without the skin is only 15 net grams of carbs. eat it with pb or cream cheese or cheddar slices and you can minimize that glycemic impact even further.

remember a carb is not a carb is not a carb.......I do MUCH better with veggie and fruit carbs than I do with grain/flour/white sugar type carbs. I can have days with higher carb levels when they are fruits and vegs without any gain.

Depending on the size & type, an apple should be in the 20-total-carb range. For example, according to the USDA, a medium (3" / 182g) apple is 25 total carbs with 4.4 fibers, and a large one (3 1/4" / 223g) yields 30 with 5.4 fibers.

Once you're out of Atkins Induction, fruits can be added - and kept on if your losses aren't held up as a result. Love the idea of having half of one with nut butter on top. I'd test the waters by incorporating that once while keeping all else the same in terms of diet & fitness - then weigh the next 3-4 mornings. This will enable you to take stock on whether you can hack it. I think you'll be able to.

I'm pretty sure most people aren't fat because of fruit. :) Enjoy your apple with some fat/protein. It's a healthy treat! :)

I eat apples but usually 1/4 to 1/2 at a time. Since low carbing they sure are A LOT sweeter than before low carbing YUMMY!!!!

I'm of the belief that if you want to eat something so bad, just eat it. Apples didn't make you overweight in the first place, and I'm sure it will have minimum inpact now. If you eat it with some protein, like the almond butter you mentioned, you will be just fine. At 10 lbs from goal, it's all about finding a balance in your diet.

:goodpost: I agree with post too - I really don't think one apple will hurt you if it's in your carb allowance for the day.

I have Type II diabetes and have gotten my bs to normal levels with diet and exercise. I will very very occasionally have an apple. I don't eat it alone and I don't eat the whole thing. I might split one with my daughter, for example.

So far they have not spiked my blood sugar. You could also just have a piece of cheese or other protein at the same time. I do think the nut butters that are higher in fat are a good choice to balance your bs, though.

Cut into thin slices and sprinkle with cinnamon and sweetener (optional) yummy. I tried using jicama to make mock apple pie filling, now that is gross. Stick with the real thing folks.

I eat an apple or other fruit once a day with my breakfast protein and it works fine. I used to have insukin resistance but now blood sugars average around 88.

Last summer I made a Apple Cobbler, subbing zucchini for the apples and it turned out awesome....

I found that half an apple has about the number of carbs suggested for a single low carb meal (around 10). I just make sure I have it with a meal containing protein & fat.

ita! we grow our own. there are a couple of them left in the cold storage so i will be making a pie for desert for dh & dd. for my desert tonight i'm eating 1/2 apple with core scooped out and filled with pb then sliced into bite size pieces. might even top it off with a dollop of whipped cream.

i do have to watch how much fruit i eat cuz it gets my sweet tooth going.

I'm not diabetic, and occasionally eat half of a medium apple with an ounce of cheddar as a snack. I just make sure to count the carbs. Ginger Gold and Ambrosia apples are my favorites. :)

Apples always remind me of dieting, so I rarely eat them, but a baked apple with spices, butter, ricotta, and some whipped cream sounds pretty good.

I made my own apple pie spice because it is so expensive in the stores. Then cooked up some chunks of apple with the spice with a couple drops of stevia. It went into my Greek yogurt. Tasted like a creamy apple pie.

I like to eat one or two chopped up in full-fat cottage cheese with chopped walnuts and cinnamon.
