Wheat Belly on Dr Oz

The Wheat Belly author Dr Davis was on the Dr Oz show yesterday, 12/3/12. Dr Oz repeated the blood sugar test that Dr Davis put in his book. 5 test subjects were given 1 slice of whole wheat bread. The blood sugar was tested. The following day the same 5 people were given a snickers bar and tested again. The results astonished Dr Oz. 3 of the 5 had blood sugar levels 2 times higher with the bread than the snickers bar. The other 2 had the same high numbers with both the bread and candy. You can see the video on the Dr Oz site or the Wheat Belly blog site.

Not surprising. Dr Atkins touched on this a decade or more ago. He said something about the combination of fat, protein(peanuts) and carbs helps "dull" the effects of the carbs. He didn't recommend it, but he did touch on the subject.

But, its not like that a LC WOE ever danced with controversy either eh?

I thought Dr. Davis did a good job, and Dr. Oz actually read the book, listened to the explanations and seemed to agree with it. I could have done without the yellow water demonstration--I think Dr. Oz doesn't think much of his audience's intelligence. The blood sugar tests were very good, but Dr. Davis missed an opportunity when one of the women whose blood sugar spike doubled with whole wheat said "I guess I should just eat Snickers bars instead"--that was exactly Dr. Davis' point!

However, I won't be surprised if Dr. Oz is plugging a "healthy, whole grain diet) tomorrow.

I find, if I do eat something higher in carbs, and I eat it with something very high in fat, it will keep my bg lower. It's definitely not a healthy way to live though, and sometimes it will just delay the higher bg spike.

Emily has her biases too, don't forget. One of them is disregarding lay explanation of anything medical. I actually had to stop reading her blog, the snooty tone finally annoyed me to the point of diminishing returns.
