What is your favorite sweetener?

It seems there are a bunch of new choices on the market for sweeteners? What is your fav? Least bitter aftertaste? Lowest effect on blood sugar? Least carbs? Least stomach upsets/gas?

I'm thinking Erythritol is the best I've found so far.

Anyone tried Lakanto? Reviews?

I use ezSweets most bc I know it's calorie/carb free, but I like truvia best for taste. It's got 3G erythretol in it which worries me. I'd love opinions re whether there's anything to worry about.

I have three I like - splenda, truvia and the new one nectresse
Splenda is the one I use mainly for cooking, I like adding a little nectresse to my coffee, truvia I use the least of the three. I don't get an aftertaste or stomache distress from any of them.

I put together my own blend of xylitol and Truvia, a 2:1 ratio, and can't tell the difference between that and sugar. I also don't need things to be very sweet anymore so that cuts down how much I use.

Erythritol is natural. Our own bodies make it in small amount when we digest fruit. Even though I might me eating it in much larger amounts than my body would make on its own, I don't worry about it at all. I'm at least assured that it isn't a neurotoxin and that it isn't destroying the healthy bacteria colony I'm working so hard to establish.

Ahhh, that is good to know. I'm more worried, though, about whether it'll knock me out of ketosis.

Erythritol is one of the least likely sweeteners to negatively impact blood sugar or in any way affect far metabolism. It's my second favorite. Stevia comes in first.

Thanks! i'll keep it in the rotation.

Ya know, I did some research on it a long time ago and decided it was good, but then I forgot what I read about it. And then just recently I saw that the packets say they have 3 g carb each and I freaked out.

My favorite is a combination of the two--powdered erythritol plus a little stevia. Zsweet is a good blend available at netrition.

Kal brand Stevia extract.

No carbs, no aftertaste, no additional ingredients.

Did you know that natural flavorings can and do include things like crushed anal sacs from beavers?

This is what I use and like the most as well. Lol at natural flavors. I do get annoyed whenever I see that on ingredient labels and will avoid whenever possible. I want to know exactly what I'm eating.

I like Splenda (loose or in the packet) for coffee. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on some pure sucralose - but for now I find that the amounts I'm using it in aren't interfering with my weight loss.

NuNaturals Pure Stevia Extract. You need very little and I find that is doesn't have a weird aftertaste.

My fav, no after taste, no effect on b.g. and no carbs is liquid sucralose (commercially known as EZ-Sweet).

The sweeteners that tend to cause gastric issues are sugar alcohols (i.e. erythiritol, xylitol, maltitol, sorbitol, isomalt and a # of others). These also having varing effects on blood glucose. I have heard that the best way to count them is to use half of their listed carb count.

I read an expose on "Natural Flavors" and the Castoreum (crushed anal sacs from beavers) are used in many products including products with vanilla, raspberry, and strawberry. Playing by the rules, you could use cat urine as a natural flavoring. I have read where this is threatening the Beaver population which in turn threatens fish because they need the dams, and so on. Could be hype - who knows?

What I want to know is who is the first person to bite a beaver on the butt and say, "Hmmm, this tastes like vanilla, or strawberries."

OK back on topic.

While I don't avoid natural flavorings like the plague or anything like that, if there are two similar products and the only difference is natural flavorings, I'll choose the one without.

Truvia has Erythritol, stevia leaf extract, natural flavors. So there is more Erythriol (sugar alcohol) than Stevia in it by volume and it has those "who knows what they are" natural flavors and since it doesn't taste any better than Kal brand and since it actually costs more in the long run than Kal brand, I'll stick to Kal.

YMMV

If I use anything it is stevia, but that's very rare. The key with it is to try different varieties until you find one that you like the taste of.

But, I also think it's important to avoid replacing high carb sweet foods with lc ones because you are replacing one junk food with no nutritional value for another. Plus, when you stop eating sweet foods your taste buds adjust and everything else tastes a lot sweeter.

Thanks for all the feedback. I found that Truvia is quite nice for coffee and doesn't give me stomach gas like malitol does. I can put it in the blender and make powdered form when required for better blending.

I really dislike "Just Like Sugar". It's main ingredient is Chicory Root and it is sweet, but certainly has a awful aftertaste.

I've used Splenda but find it has a weird aftertaste too so I'm using a bit here and there to use up the big bag of it in my cupboard.

The liquid stevia i have isn't that yummy either.

I just ordered Ideal Sweetener (Brown version) from Heartland -- Ingredients: Xylitol, maltodextrin, molasses. Less than 0.3% sucralose for added sweetness.

With E-Z Sweets - because it is liquid form and doesn't have the same fillers as the powdered, do you have to count carbs with it?

Wow! I thought you were making this Beaver extract up! Went and googled Castoreum and it is true!!! Learned something new that I will have to remember to spread the knowledge!

From Health.com...

"Castoreum

What it is: Brace yourself—this food flavoring is extracted from the castor sac scent glands of the male or female beaver, which are located near the anus. According to Milkowski, the substance is pretty expensive (think about what it probably takes to obtain it) and is more common in perfume than in actual foods.

Where you’ll find it: While it sounds downright disgusting, the FDA says it’s GRAS, meaning it’s “generally recognized as safe.” You won’t see this one on the food label because it’s generally listed as “natural flavoring.” It’s natural all right—naturally icky."

I don't have the imagination to make that one up

Unfortunately the effect on the Beaver population for this is unwarranted.

I've also read where sodium benzoate turns into benzine in your digestive tract, something I'd rather not have floating around in my body. This nukes a lot of foods/sweetners for me.

Aspertame/Nutrasweet is a GMO product, and this product something I do avoid like the plague. In fact, no more corn (or corn products), soy, canola, cottonseed, yellow squash or zucchini unless the label states they are non-GMO foods. I read where sugar from beets is now mostly GMO (cane is OK), but then I'm off sugar as part of my diet. The last thing I want is an insecticide merged into the DNA or something laced with roundup (a close cousin to Agent Orange).

Saccharin has a weird aftertaste, and there is controversy about it's role as a carcinogen.

So Kal has stevia extract and no additional ingredients. Sounds and tastes good to me. So why get Truvia, EZ-Sweets, or something with Dextrose (corn) when you can get something with no additional ingredients? Doesn't make sense to me - of course YMMV.

I read that the DNA in corn gets absorbed by the bacteria in your digestive system where they continue to manufacture the insecticide long after the corn is digested. That's more upsetting than the crushed Beaver anal sacs to me.

Read the labels.

I'm in my upper 60s, all my blood work is in the recommended range, I am not taking any prescription drugs and haven't in decades (with the exception of the time I got stung by a scorpion), and haven't even had a common cold in at least 5 years. I'm healthier than most my age, have more energy, look younger, and unless I have an accident, expect to live longer.

I'm on a LC diet, I'm careful about what I eat, and I do moderate exercise. So far it's working.

Bobby
