Sugar Free Root Beer....

I have never been a soda drinker at anytime in my life. Last week, however, someone mentioned they made a root beer float with diet rootbear and heavy cream.

Well, I bought a large bottle of A & W rootbeer and I actually like it plain, but just noticed it's sweetened with aspartame. Isn't aspartame the devil?

Is there a rootbeer sweetened with splenda? I actually think the aspartame is giving me a mild headache....:stars:

My favorite is Hansens Diet Soda-it's sweetened with Splenda. They have a tangerine lime one that is amazing!

Here is a list of flavors!

Diet Cherry Vanilla Creme
Diet Black Cherry
Diet Kiwi Strawberry
Diet Tangerine Lime
Diet Ginger Ale
Diet Creamy Root Beer
Diet Pomegranate
Diet Original Cola

Thanks Melisa!:high5:

Oh man, Hansen's Diet Creamy Rootbeer is great! It also makes great protein shakes in the summer time, just it for the liquid.

Jennyl 11-09-2012 01:28 AM

I love a&w rootbeer

watcher513 11-09-2012 01:31 AM

I love A&W also but try to stay away from aspertame and unfortunately they use that.

flatferenghi 11-09-2012 05:43 AM

i never worried about aspertame versus splenda or stevia

i am already brain dead anyway. so harm no foul. but I will look for that Hansen's. Those flavors look very inviting. I am a moderate diet soda drinker, down from being a very heavy one. for example, it was ususal for me to total 4 litres of the stuff on a daily basis. I make one 2 litre bottle last about 4-5 days. I do have 1 diet chocolate soda (sometimes less)daily. Those are 20 oz size bottles. i only allow myself diet soda IF I get in some real water. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI

I bet those floats would taste good with A&W diet cream soda, do you just use heavy cream?

Lori37 11-09-2012 07:10 AM

Aspartame is the Devil! And while Splenda isn't that much better, it is better.
Shasta brand uses Splenda and it happens to be the cheapest soda out there!

There is Zevia too which is found in health food stores, made with Stevia. :)

I'm on the East Coast, so you may not be able to get these things that I find in my local supermarket:

A soda brand called Waist Watchers--it's sweetened only with Splenda, and they have a root beer. Although I no longer drink diet sodas, I've had these in the past, and they are excellent.

Also Zevia, canned soda sweetened with stevia. I have not tasted this brand, but for some reason, it's stocked with 'diet foods' (as opposed to with all the other sodas). I mention this because you may have to look in another section for non-aspertame sodas.

melisa82 11-09-2012 09:47 AM

I've tried the Zevia brand, and could not get past the "weird" aftertaste. Not for me. Good thing I'm not a huge soda drinker. Sometimes, I'll just mix SF flavored syrup with some club soda and have any flavor "soda" I want!

PaminKY 11-09-2012 10:19 AM

I've tried all the Zevia flavors and they just aren't that good, the least offensive were the cream soda and the caffeine-free cola, but they are great to cook with.

The fear of Splenda and Aspartame results from a successful campaign by the sugar industry to spread false rumors:
Big Sugar began a campaign against sucralose, claiming it was actually a chemical made with chlorine that lacked long-term scientific studies establishing safety, while presenting sugar as a natural alternative for health-conscious consumers. The sugar industry and the diet industry hid their main concern, money, behind concerns for public health.

I see this as a significant cause of the obesity epidemic -- many people choose sugar drinks over those sweetened with AS. Sugar is much worse. Don't let the sugar industry succeed in fooling you.

Shasta diet sodas use Splenda.

I was quite surprised to find aspartame/Equal DOES give me headaches. It's really not just made up. I avoid it.

Wow; I can't wait to read these links because I have been wondering whether or not Splenda was dangerous. Very helpful, Thanks PianoAl!

Hi, I love the Zevia, especially the cream soda, cola one, I really love them all. I am a diabetic so can drink them. Glad I like them because I am a soda drinker. The thing I like about Zevia is that it doesn't make me just want to drink one right after the other. One will satisfy me.:)

Charski 11-09-2012 03:28 PM

I usually avoid aspartame, because when I drink too many sodas sweetened with it, I end up with a bump on my nose!

I really like the Hansen's diet root beer - has great flavor.

I also like the Zevia ginger root beer. I like most of their flavors, the Dr. Zevia is tasty stuff, the only ones I didn't care for so much are the cola (but the cherry cola is good) and the lemon lime, but I'm not a lemon lime fan anyway. My main gripe with them is that they run about $1/can! I did get some cherry cola at SaveMart on sale for $3.99/six pack last week though.

For a RB float, just add a couple tablespoons of heavy whipping cream (not whipped) to your glass, then pour in the root beer. It's really good.

Also really good - the whipped cream vodka and Hansen's diet root beer! Makes a VERY yummy root beer float with a kick! :D Just sayin'........

watcher513 11-09-2012 04:22 PM

Lol, gotta love that kick.

I haven't found Shasta anywhere in Colorado. When I was growing up in MN, our grocery store had it and my mom would let us get some once in a blue moon (we were a pop free family)

years ago I had my wisdom teeth removed....I remember drinking root beer with cream in it all the time

Sugar Free Root Beer

Blue Sky creamy root beer is my favorite

GME 11-02-2013 09:48 AM

Trader Joe's has the best price on Hansens I have found.

I like the black cherry mixed with wine (whatever kind you like) and poured over ice for a homemade, sugar free wine cooler.

Just Russ 11-02-2013 12:13 PM

I like the Diet Barq Root Beer but it is sweetened with Aspertame. I save it for special occasions... I take it to family BBQs & Picnics where it always disappears... funny, seldom do any the other 'dieters' bring any offerings. I just bring enough to share & get my 1 or 2.

Arctic_Mama 11-02-2013 04:00 PM

I have zero issues with aspartame and Splenda. Sugar actively destroys health. Those substances haven't been conclusively proven to do more than give people headaches (and not significantly beyond the realm of the placebo, either!) and raise blood sugar slightly in anticipation of consumption (as all food does).

So I'm good with the normal diet sodas, but it's nice there are alternatives for those who are less comfortable :)

Karerose 11-04-2013 12:39 PM

Not a fan of any diet root beer.

However, I do drink Waist Watchers Diet Black Cherry with heavy cream. It is like dessert. Their soda is flavored with Splenda and they do have root beer too.

Sometimes I make a single serving of strawberry ice cream (frozen strawberries, heavy cream, and sweetner blended together) and pour the diet black cherry over that for an actual float.

Hated the Zevia flavors I tried and couldn't even do but a few sips. At least other diet sodas that I don't care for I could drink even if not a fan.

moonmirror 11-04-2013 06:10 PM

I love Zevia root beer!! Its the best Zevia flavor imho. I do think there are some carbs in it due to the erythritol content, but I don't drink it every day, just when I really want a soda.

Big Stevie 11-04-2013 06:14 PM

Thanks for the advice guys. I am so sick of living on ice tea and water. Time to try a few of these suggestions. I can't do the aspartame either.

ncgirl 11-04-2013 09:14 PM

I wonder if Root Beer tastes are not very individualized..I'm a A&W fan, and while I've tried most of the others listed - I just don't really like any of them. It's almost like Root Beer has the greatest variance of flavors within a 'namesake' of sodas. Just a thought, I could be wrong! My mom says all Root Beer tastes like Pepto Bismol.
And I can live with liking Pepto...

Just Russ 11-05-2013 09:36 AM

I use a lot of diet lemonaide mix (splenda). It's one of my staples.

Thanks for this very important information.
I was alway afraid of AS and not of "natural" sugar.:stars:
