Hemp Seeds?

There was a bag of these right next to the flaxseeds at Costco. Thought I'd come here to see if people used/liked this.

I tried a recipe on here for a hot cereal that used hemp seeds, but I never got the cereal to a consistency that was pleasing to me. I still have a small amount left and haven't found another use for them.

Well, I don't do protein shakes OR cereal. (The process of eating cereal is just more than I can handle in the mornings. lol)

So, since that's all I'm seeing, I'll leave 'em sitting on the shelf, for now.

I used to enjoy hemp seeds before I went LC,
Hadn't even thought about them till now.
Looked it up and found that they are

2% Carbs
75% Fat!
25% Protein

Looks pretty good!
I use to just eat them by the handfuls.
Anyone have some good suggestions on what to do with them.
I am thinking they would be a nice addition to a kale salad!

I would put them on a salad, or just spoon into my mouth lol!
I used to use hemp seed oil in my smoothies, but I am no longer a vegan and have cut out the fruit smoothies.
Hemp hearts are good though.

I like them sprinkled on salad or a 50:50 mix in MIMS (50% almond meal, 50% hemp hearts). It gives the mims a nice texture like whole wheat bread.

I'm sensitive to flax, but like hot flax "cereal" so I do a 50:50 mixture with hemp for that and it's a nice texture almost like oatmeal.

They are EXPENSIVE. But WF sells them in bulk.

I have been eating 4 tbsp of hemp hearts ( hulled seeds) every morning, plain with my breakfast, for over a year now. They have a mild, slightly nutty, pleasant flavour. Great for extra fibre (excellent for regularity), sorry if that`s TMI !!

I get the kind from Costco. I like them on my salad and hubs loves them in his smoothies. They rock & are really good for you.

I didn't realize you could get hemp seeds to eat like that! I just recently found unsweetened vanilla hemp milk at my local Krogers. It was with the non-refrigerated soy and almond milks. To me, it tastes kind of like skim milk that's had an old leather boot marinating in it for a while. It had a weird taste, for sure. It was milk-esque and I could drink it, but it wasn't too pleasing to my taste buds.

Hemp seed meal has a really sweet, nutty taste - and in my opinion is a great addition to oatmeal. (I also put flaxseed meal & chia seeds in mine.) Good in cookies, too!

Huh. Maybe I'll get some, and grind for my baking. (I've been doing a lot of Experiments in unsweet "sweets", and that could be another tool in my arsenal!)

I'm really fond of baked stuff, because it is so convenient to be able to grab-and-eat something baked. I can take one on my way out the door, and not need a plate, or a bunch of napkins, etc. (I'm also fond RIGHT NOW, because it's so darned COLD here right now, and the oven makes the house warmer!) I mostly use flax meal, with some nut-meals added in. This could be a good addition!

I buy mine in bulk at Costco, by the way. Love the idea of sprinkling it on salads - never thought of that!

P.S: Hemp seed oil is yet another tasty oil alternative.

They are touted as a great source of protein (probably arising from the vegan community). Since I have to limit my protein, my supply sits unused. I also have a carton of hemp milk which is similar to almond milk although I haven't tried it.

Some time ago I was researching the possible addition of hemp seeds to my food plan.
I was working then, and had read about a possibility of eating hemp seeds causing a cross reactivity if one was ever "drug tested" from a random work place test event....since I was working then, I chose not to even try hemp.

Now that I am retired, I can disregard that concern.
Yesterday, I bought a 2oz sample for $ .99 at the local health food store....now I am getting excited!

I haven't done any recipe research on hemp, they were yummy right from the spoon when I tried them today!

Can anyone else offer how they use hemp seeds...other than the ones already listed: salads, smoothies.
I was thinking maybe in the One Minute Muffin?
I haven't seen any info on nutritional degradation because of heat of baking or cooking...does anyone know?

I think it's time to try the Costco Hemp seeds. Saw them today but passed them by. I recommend to all the Flax USA flax powder and also the Costco chia seeds to a lesser extent. I had a problem with the fact that whole chia seeds stick to things like barnacles( somewhat inconvenient despite diligent flossing). Now I just put them in 16 oz water and use a straw to "get em on board". Not sexy but quite effective. Flax & Chias every morning.
Highly recommended!!! Scoop or two of hemp seeds, what could possibly go wrong?

My coop was giving away free small bags as samples.
I thought they tasted fine, but as I generally try to avoid seeds, I won't be purchasing any for a while . . . but they tasted ok.

OK...
I think I found the answer to my question re: nutritional degradation...I found it on the LIVESTRONG website.

"It is also highly unlikely — although not impossible — to get a positive drug test result after consuming large amounts of shelled hemp seeds.
Buying, Storing and Using
Look for shelled hemp seeds in the refrigerated section of natural food stores. Since the oils in hemp seeds can quickly go rancid, they are best kept cool and used quickly. Heating hemp seeds will destroy the nutritional benefits of the fatty acids, so add hemp seeds to foods after cooking."

So, I think I'll keep looking....since I know that most 'sellers of hemp seed' don't keep it in the refrigerator....so perhaps there is an "expiration date" for when it goes bad after it is harvested.....just like EVOO.

I add them to granola along with chia, flax, and sesame seeds which I make for the family. One of the things I miss eating but have tried to make a similar product for myself using TVP as the grain base rather than oats and 7 grain flakes. It is what I eat in place of cereal.

Thank you! I'm super excited, especially as I'm now emerging from first trimester nausea and exhaustion. The more kiddos the better, it's not like they're significantly more work at this point, just a lot more love
