I, too, have read quite a bit about the cancer/sugar connection. It drives me wild to see candy dishes on the reception counter at the Oncologist's office!
So true - the sponsors for major cancer fund raising are those same products that are the most deleterious. It would be funny if it weren't so harmful and sad.

I am also a cancer survivor. The candy is there because you get such a bad taste in your mouth when they stick the needles in your port and extremely dry mouth with some of the medicines. I was not low carbing at the time but I am sure there could be a better solution than the hard candy. After the first time () I could not stand the site of the candy again. I always just put gum in my mouth.

I'm a big believer that sugar feeds cancer, so the less sugar/carbs in the diet the better. (I had a friend with colon cancer that metasticized into liver cancer so I can vouch for this)

And you're a good wife for researching stuff yourself and not just going by what the doctor says you should do!

Oh And I am so happy that your husband is doing good! I am a three year breast cancer suvivor.

When my Dr was explaining the difference between a ct and a pet scan I was thinking then why don't they encourage people not to eat sugar and empty carbs. Of course it still took me forever after that to start and stick to a low carb diet. And I hope I will always remember how much better I feel when eating this way. It has helped so many other problems I was having and I am not feeding any stray cancer cells that could be floating around.

So good job to you and keep up the good work it is alot more work cooking and shopping wise but so worth it.

Congrats to you and your husband, and to all of the other cancer survivors and survivors' loved ones in here!

I've also cut my sugar waaaaay back out of fear of it feeding tumors. Mine are benign so far, but they suspect a few may be turning bad right now, maybe it's time to cut it all the way down to zero.

If you haven't read his blog, I think you would find it very informative.

Thank you, Pat! I will absolutely read his blog. Thank you for the info.- Leslie

And thank you so much for all the warm wishes. I am serious when I say that I don't think we could be doing this WOE with any degree of success without all of you here at the LCF Board!

And re: the candy dishes at Oncology centers- it's true! They are everywhere! I never thought about it being for the cancer patients bad taste but of course that makes perfect sense (my husband complains about it but usually drinks a diet Dr. Pepper to wash the taste out)- but there is no reason they can't provide sugar free gum and candies, right?

I also want to say that our oncologist, while not completely on board with the low carb diet (she was worried he wouldn't be getting enough calories- clearly she can't see his dinner plate!), but she was not against it either. She was really sort of "whatever rocks your boat". I doubt she will be telling her other patients to go LC. But I wanted to share our story with you all, so that if you know of anyone suffering similarly, maybe our story can give them an extra little nudge to try the LC WOE...

PRECISELY! For those that don't know, a PET scan is able to tell what spots on a CT scan are "metabolically active", i.e. more likely to be tumors/metastasis. How they do the test is that they give you a glucose drink that somehow tagged, in order for it to be "seen" by the PET scanner. They know that when you drink this stuff, the cancer cells will greedily slurp it up and therefore light up big time on the scan.

i have heard it from more than 1 source incl Dr. Atkins, of course

that tumors, lesions, neoplasms etc feed off sugars. By eliminating sugars and starches(which are converted to sugar) from the diet, we may ameliorate a cancerous condition. To be sure, sugars certainly do not promote good health. So glad for his improvement. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI
