Question for Successful Re-Inductioners...
This question is for people who have gone through Atkins Induction in the past and successfully lost weight (for me it was 41 pounds). Then, having gained it most or all of it back went through Induction again and were successful at losing weight again. Here's the question...
Was it easier or harder to lose weight the second (or third) time on Induction? Thanks, Phil |

I lost about 50lbs in 1 yr. and then regained it and 50 more. So when I came back to Atkins, I had 100 to lose this time and now I was almost 10 yrs older. Lost about the same for the first year (55lbs) but then hit my current stall.
I do think that many people who have previously done Atkins come back and don`t bother to brush up on the specifics of induction and include foods that are not induction friendly. It may work but it may not. |

I'm not sure if it's easier or harder. It was easy the first time. It's been easy now.
The difference for me. The first time, it was easier for me to fall off. I lost the weight and was maintaining even jumping off once an a while, then thought I could jump off and jump back on anytime. Not so much for me, because one of the jumping off, I stayed off. Now I know to watch for that habit. This time around, I'm looking for more the long term maintaining vs the first time was just to reach goal. |

Parrot, I know exactly what you're talking about! When I look back at why I fell off, I can see the reasons why. Plus I'm more informed now about how and why LC works.

cfine, I agree. I'm finding it harder to lose the weight this time. Which is the reason why I started this thread, I wish I knew why it's harder.

Philly - is it harder because you can't seem to get focused and stay fully on plan or because despite eating perfectly on plan the weight is just glued to you? If it's glued I don't know what to suggest other than to look at the calories and see if perhaps it needs an adjustment since you are a tad more sage.
This is my 4th time getting going to lose a major amount of weight but not each time did I use LC. This time around I'm just finding it hard to motivate myself fully. I need a week of no one messing with me. No BBQ's, birthdays, weddings, movies, etc. Once it starts to come off I'll be fine once again -focused and obsessed.

Well, if you consider induction only eating 20g of carbs, then I am always on induction and found it easier the second time around.
If you consider induction eating only the foods recommended by Dr. A, then no, I'm not. It was the restriction of certain food that kept me from returning to this type of induction the second time around. Now I eat those foods, but stay below 20gs carbs, still get into ketosis, and lose weight. It's a YMMV kinda think, I guess....... ![]() |

Philly - all the other times I tried induction - I couldn't get past the first few weeks and I'd fall off the wagon. Because I just couldn't hack it.
This time I started seriously and totally sincerely 12/31/11 at age 49 and 176 pounds (the 226 in my sig is the highest I have ever been) and right now I am 4lbs from goal - I have not had a hard time losing, but I have not had one cheat day, I have eaten more carbs than I should in one day but they have been legal carbs. Reading the I fell off and gained it back threads, made me decide to make it a lifestyle from the beginning this time so I think of this in terms as just how I eat now and I love it. Audrey |

Harder because:
1. I'm 12 years older and approaching menopause (at least you won't have THAT issue!) 2. I'm much heavier the second time around. 3. I'm in much poorer physical condition. 4. A lot of metabolic damage was done in the intervening years, I have to accept that I did this to myself. It has NOT been easy, but I'm now 52 pounds lighter and counting (halfway there). My first time, it took 6 months to lose 40 lbs, this has taken more than a year so far. When I ask myself if it was worth the struggle, the answer is ABSOLUTELY yes. I was in such bad shape healthwise that I fully expected to die soon, and things have only continued to improve for me. Someone here has a great sig line that says something like: Low carbing is hard, and being obese is hard, choose your hard. I pick low carbing for health, hands down. |

The first time was easier, partly because I found it so amazing! I lost 50 pounds and kept them off for two years. I didn't gain all of it back, but most of it. It was all due to carb creep and mindless eating.
Now, it's been harder (but not impossible) and is taking longer (but not forever). I'm making fewer mistakes, and it's once again, very important to me. I tell myself it doesn't matter how long it's going to take. I know what can go wrong, and think I'm avoiding most of the pitfalls. You've probably heard this before...I read it on this board..."A year from now I'm going to wish I'd started today". |

I lost 60 lbs in 2009, gained half of them back, and am almost back to my 2009 weight. I've lost just as rapidly as I did in 2009, but my motivation at times hasn't been as good. When I've stalled, I simply have taken in tooooooooo many calories. It's all about COMMITMENT; I'm just not as invested this year as I was 3 years ago.........

FOR ME ITS A LITTLE HARDER THIS TIME BUT FOR REASONS OTHER THAN THE FIRST GO ROUND. THE FIRST TIME I LIVED ON MY OWN AND DID ALL MY OWN COOKING. NOW I MOVED MY MOM IN WITH ME AND SHE DOES A MAJORITY OF THE COOKING. NOW I PRECOOK ALOT OF MY MEALS ON MY OFF DAYS SO I HAVE PLENTY OF FOOD ON HAND.
THE PIC BELOW IS FROM MY FIRST TIME LC. I WENT FROM 311 DOWN TO 257 IN THAT PIC 3-17-07 Last edited by zombiegoat2000; 08-06-2012 at 05:07 PM.. |

Good point zombie! My first time, the only other person living with me was my wife. Now I'm living in a new state, new culture (in the South every event, it seems, is centered around food) and my sister-in-law and her daughter live with us. And instead of dealing with only one-non low carber I'm dealing with three, lol! -------------------------------------------------------------------- Quote:

For me the first time was easier because the weight came off at a much faster rate which kept me very motivated to stay 100% true to the plan. This time the loss is much slower and although I've not slipped up the loss is not as motivating this go around.

The first time was easier and I lost weight faster. I did lose this time and am maintaining quite well; however, the loss was a lot slower (which I really didn't mind). For me, I would say the slower loss this last time was age (older) and exercise (less) related.

My very first time, I was the incredible shrinking woman. Then I got pregnant. I had the baby and tried to go back on... and then got pregnant.
Two babies (and 3 pregnancies) later, I tried to go back on without re-reading... And a fit of severe depression drove me off. (It wasn't diet related, but having to worry about what I ate was making it harder.) When I finally buckled down in January and got back on track for real, I was at first disappointed in my results: First successful time, I'd lost 40 lbs in 6 months. This time, I was only down 20 lbs after 3 months... Talk about frustrating! Oh, wait... Huh... 20 in 3 months is half of 40 in 6 months, isn't it? Once I realized that, everything got much easier. So what I've learned is 1.) DON'T go by memory. Re-read, if you want to succeed. And 2.) Track your weight & measurements over time. It'll save your sanity every time. |

Personally, I don't believe its harder; what I *do* believe is that alot of people discount "carb creep" on subsequent attempts thinking, 'oh, a little bit of this won't hurt' ...
That is so wrong. If you want the results you had the first time, it takes serious diligence and adherence to a STRICT plan. Just my 2 cents. Betty |

This is what failed me the first time. After goal I was like "yeah, that slice of pizza with garlic bread won't hurt me" The whole pizza and 5 garlic sticks later, "darn, why did I just do that?", oh well, let me chase that down with some beers. Wrong. Now I know!!!

You all make great points!
The "carb creep" mentality is what hurt me the first time. Also The first time I was not doing Induction to the letter (ate nuts and more vegetables than allowed and more coffee than allowed) and I think that may have caused me to be "lazy" with counting carbs later on. I had never read DANDR in it's entirety and so I think I may get the book this time and read it. I think having the knowledge of "why" and "how" LC works will help me through the rough times. And after all this is a lifestyle change! Thanks everyone! Viva Low Carb! |

Great question! The first time I did Atkins was in 1976 and it was pretty much zero carbs as there were no bars, shakes, you name it, to derail me
I lost 17 lbs in 3 weeks, and 35 pounds in 2 months. When I regained after 8 years, I was using faux products and while the weight came off, it was slower. Then in 2007 I used Atkins 72 again, and lost 18 lbs the first month so pretty close to the initial time and I was 30 years older! So I would say it works if you follow the plan.Good wishes to you! I did Atkin's induction last year and lost 50lbs. I yo-yo'd around, hovering around 275-280. My low weight was 271, so I didn't have to repeat the loss. However I can say that starting back up again to loose the second 50lbs was hard and I had many failed starts. Then I went back to what had worked before, a gradual weaning off of carbs for a week or two then zero. It's so much easier for me to just simply avoid all carbs in the beginning. That gives me a good push and drops weight quickly.
Now that I've made it through my first 10 days or so it's getting easier, the cravings are subsiding and I've lost enough weight that I'm planning a treat meal next week. I had them before and was pretty good about just having that one treat and going back to dieting. Tuesday I'm gonna hit the all you can eat Sushi Bar. So, it's not like I'm going to attack a bakery or cake factory... Just that the white rice is a no-no... |

I find that this time around it is a bit harder. I get bored with certain foods really fast. Where last time I had an omelet with cheddar and bacon every morning for months, I don't think I could eat that every day now. I need to look for variations and other things to eat. There are still things I could eat every day all day long, but I do need to get more creative.

Thank you all for sharing - I am going through getting onto a fully clean Induction right now, and it is kicking my butt. I agree with all the others who say that not dropping off is what helps you continue your progress and it's easier to stay on if you don't get off. This is coming from someone who recently dropped off and gained all the 15lbs back I had worked so hard just to take off!
