Peanuts?
Why do my peanuts have maltodextrin?? I bought a name brand, but didn't read the label assuming peanuts were peanuts.

Are they dry roasted? I noticed that they seem to season them of course with some sort of sugar for added flavor.

It's a bummer, but I've learned the hard way that you really have to check the labels for nuts and nut butters. Even products that advertise themselves as "natural" or just say "xxnuts" on the label often have sugar, MSG, etc. added. After repeatedly leaving jars of nut butters and bags of nuts on the counter at work for others to take, I've learned to read the ingredient list for nuts and nutbutters with special care.

They're lightly salted and roasted. Sea salt, maltodextrin, corn syrup and corn syrup solids. Live and learn!

I don't know if you get the chance where you live, but if you can check asian/african food stores, many of their recipes call for peanuts and they are sold dried and shelled (but not roasted), into big bags, often available in the peeled and unpeeled version as well.

Many people cannot eat peanuts on Atkins. I think they are considered a legume and not a nut.

Atkins didn't say no PB/peanuts and they may very well be a legume, botanically, but their nutrient profile is like a nut...which is why they are acceptable on many LC plans.
The dry roasted type are coated w nasty stuff. Just get the straight roasted/salted or in the shell. |

I have to read my package now. I get the dry roasted in shell..no salt. I didn't read the ingredients because I thought it was just NUTS.

I always spend 20 minutes in front of the nut/nut butter aisle every time I go to a new store or when a new product comes out checking ingredients and carb counts.
(someday I'll learn to go to the nut aisle before the frozen food aisle!) |

I'm not on Atkins, just doing my own thing. I've never done well on most plans of any type because, if I'm being honest, I'm kind of picky.
Plus, I just do better when I eat when and what I want (within the framework of LC). Re: peanuts.. my daughter told me that besides reading labels I might want to try the fresh peanut butter at Whole Foods. I don't eat much peanut butter/peanuts, but that sounds good. |

Whole Foods' fresh ground peanut and almond butters are pretty good if you like chunky butters, though I usually add a bit of salt to them. Be careful not to use the honey roasted peanut one though!
