All or nothing?
Do you think low carb high fat is an all or nothing thing?
For instance, is a HF diet only dangerous in the presence of carbs? Or would someone be better off doing low-fat/high-carb than moderate-carb/moderate-fat diet? What I'm trying to ask is...should you ONLY increase your fat intake if you are willing to decrease carbs?? ![]() |

That's my understanding. Remember at the end of the day calories will count (more so if you eat more carbs) so as you add carbs you will have to decrease fats. Eating low carb changes how our body gets it's fuel ... our bodies actually use fat up!

Research points to the carb+fat combo as being problematic. There's just something about the insulin spike coupled with the availability of fat that does damage. It's why a juicy steak is a good thing (fat+protein) but a glazed doughnut or bag of fries (carb+fat) is bad.
Some people do better on a low-fat diet as long as they don't make up for it with a ton of sugar. That's the trap of the "foods" (using that term loosely) like SnackWell cookies, in which the fat has been removed, they're loaded with sugar to make up the flavor, and that's supposed to be healthy. I love seeing bags of jelly beans with "A FAT FREE FOOD!" printed on the package. Really? So then I should eat them as part of a "balanced diet" as I watch my fat intake? |

Jenny Ruhl has a new book out called Diet 101: What they don't tell you about low carb dieting. She points out that it's a particularly bad idea to increase carbs while you keep fat levels up too. She suggests that if you are going to increase carbs, you should decrease fat to no more than 30% of daily caloric intake.
High fat + high carbs = metabolic damage of the worst kind. |

I think it's often a chain reaction. A person develops a pattern of eating empty carb calories (sugar and flour). Over time, the body senses the lack of nutrients and scrambles for more food--any food--that happens to be nearby and in the US that's going to be about equal amounts carb (probably corn syrup) and fat (probably vegetable oil).
If a person is a conscientious enough to even know her numbers, she's already ahead of the game and can probably make it work as long as total quantity is under control. |

Ok, so if you decide to eat higher carbs on a particular day, you should lower your fat, got it. My question is..could you do this on a regular basis and still get good weight loss and health? Maybe 2 - 3 times a week?
