Is ground Flaxseed ok?

Hey everyone. I started to use ground flaxseed this week - 1 tablespoon each morning. Just wondering if it is ok during induction or will it hinder ketosis? There are so many benefits along with the added fibre.

My opinion only, I'm doing a sort of extended induction, and I regularly have flax. No problems here, no issues with ketosis. It's not on the actual induction list of approved foods; but when that list was compiled flax wasn't something that was really 'on the radar', so to speak.

I think it's fine in moderation, but with a caution. Flax has phytoestrogens. Too much flax caused me to have prolonged and heavy bleeding.

Too much was a daily muffin made with 1/4 cup of flax meal. I cut my flax down to once or twice a week and no longer have a problem. I don't hear a lot of people with this reaction here, but when I googled unexplained prolonged bleeding there were enough reports of it that I stopped eating flax and the bleeding stopped within two days of doing so.

It may be that I'm more sensitive to estrogens because I have PCOS, but I do suggest using caution. I still eat flax but in moderation now.

Holy cow! With all of the reading I've done on it, I haven't come across what you've described. All of the googled info suggests 1 to 2 tbsp per day which is about 30 gr in total. I wonder if it can actually cause problems then. Have to do some more reading.

I think it was kind of unusual to have that happen, but it has apparently been an issue with a small number of other people. I don't want to warn people off of flax (I'm still eating it in moderation), but just to be aware and not go overboard.

I love it! It's almost completely carb free.

I asked this question a few weeks ago and someone said to try and limit it to a couple of tablespoons, however I use 1/4 cup (4 tbs) every day and have had no problem thus far! Good luck!

I've looked at those packages of Linwoods flavored flax powders a dozen times but never picked one up since my yogurt seems busy enough as it is.

another flax seed question

Ok, so, I need all the flax seed I can get, if you know what I'm sayin . .

My bag of whole flax seeds (which I grind in a handy Goodwill coffee grinder) says 9 grams carbs per 3 tablespoons. however, it also says dietary fiber 7 grams. Do I get to subtract the fiber from the carbs, since it can't be digested and just passes through? or do I count the whole 9 grams of carbs? thanks!

Yes, you can subtract the fiber and only count the net carbs. If you're having bathroom troubles, be sure to drink plenty of water along with the fiber. I have found that increasing fats and taking magnesium is more helpful than fiber.

If you are new diet revolution or nutritional atkins then yes you take off the fibre grams if you are atkins diet revolution from 1972 then they all count.

You can make super easy crackers with flax seed.
You can fancy it up, but at the most basic you can get by with just water and flax seed.
I sometimes add ground flax to my mixture especially if it is too watery after soaking for a couple of hours.
It makes a crispy carrier for spreadable cheese or seed or nut butter.
It's really good with a smear of tahini.

I eat a lot with no negative consequences.

Breakfast is often flax seed meal bread with butter, SF maple syrup, low carb nature's hollow jelly, and unsweetened whipped cream. Or I might have it as toast with my farm eggs, avocado, and fried cheese:

Breakfast.jpg

Next, I always have a quick shake with water, protein powder, 1 tbs psyllium, and 2 tbs flax seed.

With coffee I might have a slice of flax seed bread, with Torani almond syrup and almond butter and whipped cream.

Lunch might include a grilled cheese sandwich using Muenster cheese and lots of walnut oil.

I think the flax has done a lot to lower blood pressure.

Flaxseed Bread

Ingredients:

2 cups flax seed meal

1 Tablespoon baking powder (salt-free type)

1 teaspoon potassium salt

.5 cup chopped pecans (optional)

1 Tablespoons erythritol

5 beaten eggs

3 drops liquid splenda

1/2 cup water

1/3 cup oil

Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350 F. Prepare pan (a 10X15 pan with sides works best) with oiled parchment paper or a silicone mat.

1) Mix dry ingredients well -- a whisk works well.

2) Add wet to dry, and combine well. Make sure there aren't obvious strings of egg white hanging out in the batter.

3) Let batter set for 2 to 3 minutes to thicken up some (leave it too long and it gets past the point where it's easy to spread.)

4) Pour batter onto pan. Because it's going to tend to mound in the middle, you'll get a more even thickness if you spread it away from the center somewhat, in roughly a rectangle an inch or two from the sides of the pan (you can go all the way to the edge, but it will be thinner).

5) Bake for about 30 minutes, until it springs back when you touch the top and/or is visibly browning even more than flax already is.

6) Cool and cut into whatever size slices you want. You don't need a sharp knife; I usually just cut it with a spatula.

Nutritional Information: Each of 12 servings has less than a gram of effective carbohydrate (.7 grams to be exact) plus 5 grams fiber, 6 grams protein, and 185 calories.

Wow. Not bad. I had no idea you could bake bread with no other "flour" than flax seed. I've tried flax seed in some of my baking projects and haven't had much luck; the taste and texture come out horrible. The latest experiment I've tried with flax was to add it into a baked omelet roll, which made the entire omelet inedible.

But I think I'll try your recipe with a few changes and see how it turns out.

Hmm, maybe it does have something to do with PCOS. When I started to use flax regularly, my cycle lengthened (more time between periods) and the menses itself was shorter. All of the EFAs are important to hormone regulation.

I use flaxseed to make muffins. I freeze the muffins and only eat every other day or so.

One variation is to use half Carbquik and half flax seed, but I prefer 100% flax.

The flax taste can be too much, and I need to cover it with SF maple syrup, low carb jelly, or lots of butter, etc.

I've had a few surgeries in the past year and prior to the surgery they send you a list of things to abstain from beginning 2 weeks prior to surgery because of danger of increased bleeding. Flax (or maybe it was flax oil) was on the list. I know there were a few things on the list I wasn't sure if they meant specifically in supplement form only. I didn't bother asking, but just avoided the items in all forms.

I use about 18-20 gms of flaxseed in my 1/2C greek yogurt in the morning. Haven't noticed any help in the bathroom and I'm beyond monthly issues.

In one way I can't wait to see how it affects cholestorol (along with CO), but I'm also kind of scared.
