Pancake batter in IHOP omletes

I am dumbfounded. I just saw a commercial where IHOP was proudly announcing they use pancake batter in their omletes. I figured omletes were pretty safe. Just goes to show you never know what is in the food you don't cook!

Yeah ... found that out the hard way.

Just order a "cracked egg" omelet to avoid the pancake batter.

I would NEVER have guessed. Yuck.

Thanks for the heads-up. Breakfast is one meal we can eat out and usually not worry.

Thanks for the warning. I pulled up a couple of stories about this on the Internet. One quotes the IHOP director of communications as follows: "He suggested consumers ask for 'egg-only' omelets, though he couldn't guarantee that every restaurant would make them, since the chain is a franchise." There was also a story posted by a woman with a severe allergy to gluten who asked for an egg-only omelet and got one with pancake batter in it, so I'm not taking any chances. The pancake batter adds 6 grams of carbs to an IHOP regular omelet.

Are you OK if you ask for sunny side up eggs? Maybe that would work.

That probably is the safest bet. If they put pancake batter in the omelets to make them fluffy, I wouldn't trust the scrambled eggs, either.

We were there the other week and I was glad to see this noted on their menu. Batter have always been in their omelets so it was great that they are finally acknowledging it to their customers.

Yes, I've known this for a while, thanks to this board. I saw that commercial and I couldn't believe they actually sounded like it was a good thing.

I've known this for a while now (I actually learned about it on this board) so whenever I do go to Ihop, which isn't very often, I order my eggs over easy.

Whenever I've gone to IHOP (ie: in the past 7 years), it's always been stressed on their menu. They're proud of it. Means I pretty much can't eat there (which is fine, as the service at our local one is TERRIBLE).

I never go to IHOP, but if I did...I would rather have eggs in my pancakes, than pancakes in my eggs.

Bleh, I only have pancakes at home, and rarely at that.

i wonder if they put pancake batter in their burgers.

when u order anything at IHOP, bring a lawyer's business card with you, and let them know u will use it if u do not get it your way. I loved their coffee, though. I have not been there for over 30 years. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI

This is true and also for you newbies.

Did you know that the cream at Bob Evan's in the silver pitchers is not real cream? It is powdered coffee creamer melted and refrigerated then poured into the pitchers. You must ask for half and half to avoid the corn syrup in the coffee creamer.

Also at Bob Evans they allow you to substitute melon and strawberries(in season) for their hash browns.

Also did you know that the wings at Applebees (not the breaded ones) are safe and even induction friendly.

They've done this for at least the last 10 years. I'm so glad they are openly admitting it, so that low carbers can make a better choice. I wish they would rethink putting that in there.

You can request your omelet with real eggs NO BATTER. I've done it before and they oblige, or at least I think they did. Tell them you are allergic to the wheat and sugar in the pancake batter and that you want an omelette made with real eggs that they crack open.

I would never think to ask it they were putting pancake batter in their omelets.
What else is going on that I don't know about?
I try to eat my own cooking as much as possible.

We end up eating at IHOP maybe once-twice a year...usually because relatives are visiting and want to meet for breakfast. We always just order fresh eggs, over easy or sunny-side up. No batter there, just eggs. With a couple of meat sides (bacon & sausage, yum) it makes a fine breakfast. Course they always want to know if we want hash browns, toast or pancakes with that

This is why I stay away from chain restaurants as a rule.

Why the heck do they want their omelets fluffy, anyway?? Shoot, you stuff enough bacon into that omelet, it'll be plenty fluffy.

I heard about the IHOP batter contamination on here and I've stopped plenty of my low-carb friends from ordering anything but recognizable eggs.

I ask for 3 eggs over-medium with a side of bacon, "and nothing else. No toast. No hash browns. No fruit. Because I'm a supermodel!" Then I laugh.
For some reason, acknowledging that I'm weird (to them) to not want the massive pile of carbs makes them laugh and I usually get only what I ask for.

I was at some little place in the middle of nowhere and the waitress refused to not give me "at least a little toast and some hash browns. They won't hurt ya!"
I said "okay! That sounds great! But please serve them on a separate plate and leave that plate in the kitchen."

From a business point of view, why would they want to give their secret away!?!?

Because it could be very dangerous for someone who has a serious allergy.

I feel the same way! I just spent a week in Buffalo and basically all I felt safe eating was their chicken wings (because they never bread them) and the roast beef on kimmelweck sandwiches minus the kimmelweck roll. We ate every meal out.

I'm a little tired of wings by now, though...LOL!

Just out of curiosity. Why just an egg white one? Low carb doesn't require you to do low fat

I asked for fresh egg omelette the last time I went and it was not a problem, I would rather have that than a mix that has been sitting around in a plastic jug in the cooler anyway. The gluten allergy statement should work, people are finally starting to catch on to the gluten thing if nothing else.
