Question regarding beer

First of all, I know that most would say to abstain all together, but I am not asking whether or not to indulge, ok? I don't mean for that to come off snarky.

Question....considering weight loss, would you come out better having a couple of beers 2 - 3 times a week, or maybe 5 - 6 on the weekend?

I thought it would be a problem but hasn't at all. I drink Miller 64 and Michelob Ultra. I don't retain water because it makes me 'go' constantly....serves as a diuretic.

I would guess it is better to confine it to the weekend and that way you would have more days without it's effect (whatever that may be). You really need to experiment and find out how you metabolize it.

I'd say you'll just have to try it and see how it affects you.

I don't really drink much these days, but when I did Atkins 10+ years ago I found that beer wasn't a good choice for me. If I drank 1 beer in the evening a few times a week, I wouldn't lose anything that week. But if I had a few cocktails on a weekend, it wouldn't affect my weight loss.

If you are a man, especially a young man, you can probably get away with some beer consumption, but you won't know until you try.

I would do it all in one night (or over two consecutive nights) rather than throughout the week. that way, you're burning fat for like 5 days, then burning just the alcohol on the days you are drinking. if you had a few beers every day, or spread out over the week, you'd be burning alcohol every day instead of fat.

I only drink maybe once a month, but when I do I have 2-3 glasses of wine or a couple of beers. The damage is pretty temporary, within a day or two I've recovered from the water retention. I certainly would NOT drink every week, because then I'd be down to only maybe 15 days of fat burning per month, rather than 25 or so. If you have to drink though, I would say do it all at once, drink plenty of water to flush your body, and eat lightly to compensate for the increased calories.

When I was in my 20's I could get away with that. Now that I'm 34, um, no. Doesn't work for me. I have 5 Miller Lites over the 2 day weekend and gained 7 lbs water weight that took 2 weeks to come off. That was a month or so ago since I had a beer. Tried Bacardi Limon and diet Pepsi, no water weight gain. Good luck!

Michelob Ultra does not have any adverse effects and I can also drink the "skinny margaritas" that are offered in a lot of our local mexican restaurants since they contain no sugar. I think that it would be better spread out throughout the week instead of all at once. I am a light drinker 1 - 2 max at one sitting on the weekend with meals so I am not sure about a higher quantity. Keep us posted on your results.

hubby and I have much better results drinking hard liquor cocktails...mixing tequila with crystal lite lemonade for a "margarita" type taste. In a bar or restaurant, we order a shot of tequila and a glass of ice water...we bring the individual serving size of crystal lite & split one between our two glasses, drink of enough to add the tequila and we have a nice no-carb cocktail. At home, we also use the ICE flavored carbonated waters (all zero carb/zero calorie)...pineapple-coconut flavor with rum does a nice imitation of a pina colada. Orange-Mango with rum or tequila is a very tropical flavored cocktail also. The worst we get is a day or two at the same weight, but no water-weight gain at all.

I don't drink beer, but when hubby tried the low-carb beers he gained 2-3 lbs. every time he had a couple. And then it would take 5-7 days for it to come back off. So basically after having a couple, it would take a week+ to get to losing weight. Same thing happens when both of us drink wine (even though we try to find lowest carb wine...still get major water-weight gains.)

Neither of us eat more when we're drinking...just don't get the munchies with the low-carb versions.

I tried Michelob Ultra and liked it. I hate other beers though. too carby, and make me bloated and sleepy. generally when I use ketone strips to test, I am only out of ketosis for about 24 hrs after having hard liquor with unsweetened or AS mixers. with beer it takes like 3 days to get back to fat burning.

Catne, when drinking I also get the best result with liquor cocktails. I hate beer... but I think wine is a problem for me so I've ditched it.

Lets pretend you are talking about REAL beer and not LC imposters (or as I call themm "dirty water). Delicious beer is pretty carby!

I think it depends on your WOE (do you need to be in ketosis or not) AND the type of beer AND whatever else you eat.

I mean I suppose you could include the carb counts into your daily carb amount then I would think three times a week would be better IF it were only ONE beer 3 times a week. You would stay in Ketosis.

I am thinking if you drank 5 or 6 at one time ---once a week regularly ...and you were trying to stay in Ketosis, you would constantly be trying to get into ketosis as it would take a few days.

All depends on what else you are eating, drinking, and doing for exercise.

I would do it all at once. I find alcohol, especially beer and wine make me snack like a fiend the next day. - So it suits me to confine that effect to one day, otherwise I'd be fighting the urge to snack all the time.

At the moment I'm avoiding beer altogether and have returned to my love affair with gin

Some people seem to handle some alcohol okay and others do not. I think it is highly dependent on the fitness of the liver. A healthy, clean liver will be able to oxidize the alcohol and get back to burning fat. In sluggish or fatty livers, the process may not go so smoothly and then interfere with fat burning for a longer period of time. Normally homemade beers using quality ingredients and if possible natural yeasts are going to be the best choice. Some sources indicate commercial yeasts may not be desirable.

Well, here I am to report...or not. I haven't really gained or lost, but don't know if it is because of the michelob ultra or not because my calories have been up everyday compared to last week. I will have to try again sometime and then I will report back. Last week my caloric range was between 900 - 1100ish, this week more like 1200 - 1400ish. I had weight loss last week, but pretty much remaining the same this week.
Thanks for all the responses.

I've found that I don't have any issues with a glass of red wine several nights a week but beer can make me have cravings for sugar.

So.... if beer is a problem for you, you might want to try red wine.

I always say about beer, that it's "a sandwich in every bottle". Ale's are less carby, and stout's have the very most carbs (a lot in fact).

Like many here, during my weight loss phase, I still would have some low carb beers on one day of the weekend. Usually when I had my wings at BW3s

Never slowed down my weight loss. But I was very strict about keeping it to only one day of the week.
