YES! When I was told I was borderline diabetic I quickly looked up what the ADA reccomends for a diet. IT WAS VERY CARB heavy! I soon found out that the head of the ADA is also connected to a company that makes diabetes meds!
DUH they want you to NEED their medication!

Low carb is the only way to control your blood sugars without meds! I have reversed my borderline diabetic numbers!

One of the low carb docs (can't remember who) commented that when a patient comes in with a very high blood sugar (newly diagnosed) they have an emergency and have to bring it down fast. The dietician doesn't see this person until after they are on a lot of insulin and at that point the big fear is hypoglycemia. So the diet is designed to avoid hypoglycemia on a lot of meds.

Most diabetics are seen in that acute stage while still on a lot of meds and it becomes self perpetuating. You "need" carbs to avoid hypoglycemia and then carbs cause you to need meds.

The big question is, why don't endos and dieticians ever make the connection by looking past their own noses???? I suspect modern healthcare has made this worse because people are in and out of the hospital before anyone can put two and two together.

My poor MIL feels terrible about how she took care of her dad years ago before he died. His diabetes doctor told her to give him angel food cake because it was fat free. So when anyone's birthday came along, she made whatever kind of cake the birthday person wanted and a side of angel food for her dad. Then she shot him up with insulin.

It was a common belief about 50 yrs ago that fat was the nutrient that caused diabetes. She was only being compliant.

Interesting, I didn't know that.

It wasn't that long ago though, only about 15 years. She was doing exactly what the doctor said to do, but he should have known better.

The medical community was nothing short of negligent at best when they took a diet designed to treat high cholesterol (which it wasn't appropriate for, but there is at least an understandable reasoning for it), and over-applied it to any and all other conditions.

It is like when you teach first graders about the "silent e" and they start tacking it on to all of their words. Except first graders learn better very quickly and that haven't caused a health epidemic.

Thanks for this explanation! I have looked at "diabetic-friendly" cookbooks and am amazed by how carb-heavy they are. This is the first thing I've heard that explains that orientation, to some extent. I imagine that another factor is that health care professionals assume that people won't stick to a very low carb diet, so they assume there's no point in suggesting one. I think people should at least be told about the option, but warned about the consequences if they don't stick with it when they are diabetic.

Interesting. He's never been on insulin, thank goodness. Hasn't been on Metformin in a couple of years now (couldn't hack it). His eating isn't perfect, but Much better than it used to be, Way better. We've got his A1c down to 5.8, was originally in the 9's at diagnosis.

Wow, I am really astounded!! I wonder how common this is? Good for him for making such great improvements - it is clearly making a big difference. That has got to be rewarding.

I exist in a perpetual state of food-anger these days LOL..

Every food commercial I see has me talking back to the TV.
About 90% of the food offered at the grocery store makes me mad.
Every lie I hear about "healthy foods" makes me shake my head in disbelief.

It's no wonder that the obesity rate is climbing, diabetes among young people is sky-rocketing and general health of Americans is quickly failing? It makes me worry for the next generation.

Hi all, I was surprised that about 2 years ago the hospital by my house in MD put my mother-in-law on a low carb diet when she was in there for a week. She had diabetes. She was in for another reason, but the fact that they knew to do that 2 years ago was great.

Thank God you don't go to this doctor anymore who'd rather be "right (in his mind)" than have you be healthy. What a clown!

Congrats on your awesome weight loss and great numbers! You are very inspiring!
