Has anybody bought smaller clothes just to be ready?

I just bought shorts from JC Penney in 3 sizes - what I fit in now, size down, and then another size down. I did this because I am worried that by the time I need the two sizes down shorts, there won't be any to buy in the stores. Meanwhile, it will still be 100+ degrees outside here in Texas...

Am I the only one doing this?

I tend to pack away clothes that don't fit any more, so I've got a supply of clothes down to size 6 waiting for me to be able to fit into them again. I tend to buy clothes online/through catalogues, so if there's stuff that I need, I assume that I'll be able to find it, regardless of the season.

I hope you are able to wear those smaller and smaller yet shorts very soon! I don't use a scale, just clothes, to evaluate changes in my size. I find that getting closer and closer to wearing the next size down is helpful motivation for staying on plan, and it feels great to comfortably wear the smaller size item when I get there.

I think that's a smart idea. Like svenskamae, I have a lot of stored clothes I should be able to experiment with, and I'm salting away a few dollars a week for filling in extra pieces in future, but not buying anything right now.

The one exception I may make: I have a pair of white denim shorts that I LOVE that I will probably be able to fit into in another 10-15 pounds. In the past, being able to wear these shorts has done something stupid to my brain - it makes me get overconfident and causes me to slack on attention to detail with food, get lazy about exercise and otherwise sabotage myself. Now that I recognize the beast, it may not be a problem... BUT I am considering giving them away and buying another, similar pair in a smaller size.

I do it too, not much, but like for a wedding I will be going to in August. That's thinking positive and committing to plan , that we will continue to lose steadily. (I leave the tags on though, lol) Absolutely it will be hard to find a summer dress or shorts in August when I plan to be at least 1 if not 2 sizes smaller than now!

I'm realistic, I keep clothes of all the sizes I've been that are classics and still in good condition as I go up and down the scale. I don't give everything away, I know myself and my weight history and I'm not rich!

When I shop mail-order I will get the size that I think will fit and the next size smaller. If the larger one fits and I like it enough I will keep the smaller one too for later. This is especially true for pants.

In my younger days, I did that a few times--and no good ever came from those 'hopeful' purchases.

This time, I just bought when I got to the size, and what a delight that has been!

Yes I have - simply because I saw some deals that were too good to pass up, knowing that my pocketbook wouldn't be able to afford new clothes when the time came. Mostly pants last Fall when they were $3 each in clearance ($40 original)

I've done that...in fact at the end of last season I bought some 10s in hopes of wearing them this spring. Spring came and they are all too big

No way! Not intentionally at least. I am too afraid that I will jinx myself and the clothes will taunt me forever. This is why I have clothes in every size from a 8 to a 20 in pants and shirts from a medium to a women's 24/26. I am so afraid that I will need the bigger clothes again if I give them away.

Thats exactly what I have done. I dont buy more than a size smaller USUALLY. I have a divider in my closet to the right that is clothes that almost fit! LOL

I have done this for years, and the huge stash of too-small clothes still taunts me... some of it is left over from when I was thin, and some of it was bought in a misguided attempt to motivate myself... but THIS TIME it will stick!!!

it's hard to resist temptation though. I mean, I shop online at Banana Republic... I almost rarely get to go to the real-life mall. so when I see an online sale with lovely corduroys on sale for $8 (down from $90) then I snap 'em up! I have them in size 12, 10 and 8... in several colours

that, and with stores like Forever 21, things are so cute and stylish and cheap, and go out of stock so quickly that I am always tempted to buy a $7 shirt in Large, even though I currently wear XL or XXL... I just think it is better than having to buy a whole new wardrobe when I get to goal... but there is always the terrifying possibility that I might never get there

I am thinking of doing that right now. In January we go to Florida for a month. So I will need shorts/pants in a much smaller size. I have a size 16 bathing suit already that is a stomach control, so that will fit for a long time. I will shop the resale stores here soon and see what I can find. I know they have already shrunk to their permanent size, so no problem there. I won't spend much money but will be ready without paying the BIG bucks in Florida. I hate when buying a new cotton shirt to guess if it will shrink or stay the same-I usually guess wrong!

Often I will buy pants and just cut them down to make shorts. What I really need is a new winter coat. Something in a wild color, instead of just a 'good serviceable one', so the will mean $$ this fall. Maybe a leather coat?

I might still have one old size 9 jean in my closet from 33 years ago--I was 119 lbs I'll never be there again. I should look for them and make them into a grocery store bag.

My adult son just asked me if I was considering getting surgery after I lost 111 lbs. I said no, I'll never be a bikini body again--and the medical bills would be over my budget. I will just wear a girdle for my stomach and long pants. No one really looks at me that close anyway. Got to get some new bras to hold these drooping girls up though.

I will buy one thing that is the next size down for me. I use it just like my scale. I go and try on my new outfit every few days. When it fits, I go and buy another outfit one size smaller.

I used to buy clothes smaller to try and motivate myself. Not anymore except for the one.

I've found that Goodwill is an excellent source for transitional clothing. Especially if you're going into sized 4, 6, and 8. I have found SO many pairs of never-worn size 8 jeans it's ridiculous! It's a little harder to find size 10, 12, and 14 that have never been worn, but it's still possible. I just hate to spend $40 or more on something that I plan to eventually not need. I just bought one pair of 10's and 2 pairs of 8's - all designer labels and never worn - for a whopping NINE BUCKS!

I tried this, but I have found that it is not just my size, but also the shape of my body that is changing. I had a favorite pair of jeans when I was a size 16. It turns out that I don't care for that same brand, fit and style in a size 10.

I've decided just to use the thrift stores to keep me in clothing that fits well enough until I reach my goal.

I've had the same thing happen. The overall shape of my butt changes so drastically between size 18 and size 10 that any brand of pants that fit me at 18 will look terrible at size 10. Once I get below size 10, however, I can go ahead and buy an 8 or a 6 and know they'll fit me right.

Quote:

Yeah, I do this. And when I've shrunk out of clothes I donate them back right away! I refuse to keep my old large-size clothes "just in case I need them"--that kind of thinking only ensures that one day, yes, I will need them again. And I also refuse to buy more brand-new pants until I've at least made it back into a size 8.

I also sew, which has really come in handy. Just before I started to have my big surge of weight loss, I bought two pairs of linen pants for summer from J. Jill. I wore them twice--then shrunk out of them. Oh, sure, they still stay on, but all the excess fabric makes me look huge. They do have elastic waists, however, with no zipper, and the construction is simple. So I'm just going to alter them to a smaller size, and then again when I shrink further. And since my bust measurement hasn't changed, I've been able to de-tent-ify some of my shirts by sewing vertical darts in them. They're a lot more flattering, now.

That said, I don't buy smaller sizes in anticipation of getting into them. I'd rather wait to go shopping when I'm skinny.

I do, however have a very old pair of J. Crew jeans that I wore back around 1990 or '91. They're awful, with tapered, high-water legs, and I don't know how they survived so many moves without getting sent to Goodwill. But what amazes me is that they're tiny--a 7/8 that looks more like a current size 4. I don't ever remember being that thin! How on earth did I ever get into those? And is it possible I could get into them again? So despite being horribly out of style I now have them hanging in my closet as a motivator. I don't know if it's possible to ever get my 45-year-old butt into those jeans again, but I sure want to try. But that's my only "aspiration" garment.

I do the same thing, except I retrieve an item I liked from where it's packed in a "too small" box and use that as my pseudo scale. But buying a nice outfit that is a size too small sounds like a pleasant way to reward oneself after hitting a weightloss goal, so maybe I'll try that.

Since I have previously bought clothes I almost fit into and then never got into them it was a nice surprise to see it go the other way...
And my mom has lost weight this year too, so she gets the stuff that is too big for me now! So, it is a win-win...except for my husband who pays for the stuff

I have a pair from long ago, too! I don't know how old they are, but they are cropped at mid-calf and have red flowers embroidered around the hemline.
They are an itty-bitty size 6. I don't think I'll ever fit in them again, but they make me giggle when I come across them in the closet.
