Best Options From a Chinese Restaurant?

Hi guys.

My colleague is also doing Atkins and has just asked me what she should have from a Chinese restaurant. I don't really eat Chinese so - any suggestions? She's in the OWL phase and eats nuts.

I see that you're in the UK--is your friend there as well? I ask because I don't know what 'accommodations' you can get in a Chinese restaurant there.

When I last ate in a Chinese restaurant in London, it was 20 years ago, but the food and overall service was very different from what I'm used to in the U.S.

Here I can ask for a simple dish like chicken and broccoli or shrimp and mixed vegetables to be steamed and served without sauce, for example. I don't know if other restaurants would be similarly accommodating.

If she has to order from the menu, she should just be careful, ask about ingredients, etc. But most sauces are very carby.

Years ago, I remember Dr. Atkins writing somewhere that Moo Goo Gai Pan is the most carb-friendly item on a Chinese menu. If it's available at your friend's restaurant, she may want to order that.

Of course, I'm sure she knows that whatever dish she orders, she should tell the waiter to omit the rice. I find that's my biggest challenge because I just love rice.

I do get the impression that it is much easier to ask for alterations in the US. Yes my friend is here too so I will pass the information on. Thank you for such a comprehensive answer.

I usually get Shrimp and Brocolli in white sauce, ask for extra brocolli to replace the rice
I ask for No corn starch/corn flour and no sugar in the sauce.

In the USA I usually order Beef Teriyaki from the appetizer menu and ask them to "hold the teriyaki" . I usually get served 5 or 6 strips of plain beef on skewers. I don't know if it's available on the UK menus.

She should be able to get steamed lobster, shrimp or crab legs, with sauce on the side. Even if it's doused in oil, it's still Atkins-friendly, but the sauces would be carby.

I got crispy duck last time. The duck was sprinkled with 5 spice powder and perhaps something sweet, but it was only the skin. I also ask for plain wokked veggies.

it's been my experience that some asian restaurants can be quite difficult...I would eat something beforehand just in case. Between all the noodles, rice, sugar and cornstarch in the sauces...it can be difficult for a lowcarber

I do chicken and broccoli with sauce on the side. Then I usually just add soy sauce to flavor it.

This is what I do, with beef and broccoli. They warn me the sauce will be thin, I say "no problem", and that's that.

One of the chinese retaurants in the town I live in has the grill bar (don't know the proper name for it) when you can go load up a plate with raw ingredients from the bar and give it to the cook and he will cook it up for you with your choice of sauces or oils.

I usually get a big plate full of shredded cabbage, mushrooms, green peppers, a few onions and chicken, and shrimp and ask for the garlic oil to used for cooking. They cook it up in just a couple of minutes and it's better than anything you can get from the buffet. They also have beef, imitation crab (too carby), and tofu.

The concept of a "difficult" Chinese restaurant is something I've not experienced. Here in Montana in many Chinese places you can drag a goose/duck/deer quarter straight from the hunting trip into the kitchen and they're happy to cook it up for you and will give a nominal price break because you're providing the meat for the meal!

My favorite LC option is usually a lightly sauced curried chicken. I also love a good Chinese buffet because I can always find a couple of dishes that are LC friendly.

Mongolian BBQ.

We have a great one in town, but the set-up of the raw meats is a problem for me with cross contamination. A friend of mine, sick of the fact that I wouldn't go there (one allergic reaction too many), contacted the company, the franchise owner called her, and they are changing the set-up! I'll be able to back there soon. It is absolutely a low carb dream.
