So why high fat, moderate protein???

I am always trying to learn what has worked for others. I have stalled for about 8 weeks now. Waiting to get some bloodwork to rule out thyroid and any other metabolic issues...but still trying to tweak plan. I've been doing glycemic load diet, but it really focuses on carbs. Advice on the the fat/protein recommendations would be appreciated. And how do you get the high fat with moderate protein...coconut oil and other oils maybe, EFA's, fish oil??? TIA for any tips! Always trying to tweak!

Too much protein ends up as glucose. In fact it can keep one from becoming keto adapted. The amount of protein should be about 1.2g per lean body mass. I believe that is the correct amount to preserve muscle. If you are restricting carbs and limiting protein, fat must go up and will naturally.

I think a really great book that covers this issue is 'The Art and Science of Low Carbohydrate Living" by Phinney and Volek is a great resource and highly recommend it.

You say that you are doing 'glycemic load'. I wonder what your daily menu looks like? Are you eating any grains? That can be a big bugaboo for many people with metabolic issues.

.
I have a sucker's sized library of LC (and other diet) books. I am reading that book right now and I am learning things that either aren't in the other books, or are presented in a more understandable way (for me) than the other books. Especially re: the moderate protein thing with a VERY clear explanation.

I also didn't know that SALT is what is often needed (rather than a carb increase) to help with "induction flu" type symptoms early on. Another pearl from that book for me.

Geese - I like Cathy's suggestion of posting a typical days menu.

This is a typical menu:
Breakfast: 2 eggs with a few slices bacon, or Canadian bacon

Lunch: head of romaine with cukes, 5 or 6 grape tomatoes, olives, sunflower seeds (about 2 tbs.) sometimes approx. 2 tbs. of grated sheep's milk cheese, artichoke hearts in brine, not oil--sprinkle of EVOO, balsalmic vinegar

Dinner: whatever meat I'm making for the family and a load of non-starchy veggies

Between meals I'll have a palm full of sunflower seeds on occasion, a few strawberries 9low GI), a few days a week I'll have protein powder in almond milk with CO and on occasion powdered peanut butter.

If I really am dying for something carby I'll do a bite of dark chocolate (like 2 -3 bite square which is allowed on low gly load diet due to low sugar)

My naturopath says between my weight (obese) and the few carbs, I could do like 1/2 cup of brown rice before working out.
Funny thing is, my weight stays the same. I had 2 days of overeating last week and my weight stayed the same. Hoping my bloodword will show something to see why I can't lose.
I will look for that book Cathy! Looks interesting.

so I dont convert my excess protein into sugar

so i dont hurt my kidneys

so i dont get gallstones

because I have been warned more about too much protein than too much fat.

tastes better I prefer it

Geesebaby, I know that most here advocate a high fat, mod protein, LC regimen. However, I have had the best and most rapid success with a low fat, high protein, VLC plan, including a 60 lb wt. loss 3 years ago. If you remain stalled, you might look at Stillman.

Good Luck,

Whatever that is lol!

I think one of my biggest challenges, particularly of late, is figuring out what my body is made up of. How much of my weight is fat, and how much muscle. I've tried measuring, using calipers, using those scales with body fat measurements - everything is so variable.

But I agree completely with your sentiment about the book - glad you liked it - I knew you would! Science is cool.

Geesebaby, I'm not sure what all your doc is testing. But your frustrating experience with following a plan to the letter and not getting any results sounds exactly like my experience before I was diagnosed hypothyroid. I'm guessing your doc is tested for that. Once I was treated, the "playing field was leveled" in terms of abilty to follow a plan, and see appropriate results. (It's still a lot of work, and I have my ups and downs. But at least it's possible to lose now!)

Good luck!

yes he is doing thyroid testing...plus some others for my PCOS. We are also checking testosterone because I've shown low in the past and apparently that can stall weight loss as well!

It's awesome that you are getting these tests! Just knowing where you stand and what options you have in terms of hormones might be a big relief. In the mean time, I would trust my plan and just keep eating healthy like you are.

Good luck!
