Oh no, could it be?!

I've been eating a lot of eggs since I started low-carbing almost 2 months ago...well, today I ate 3 hard boiled eggs and about 5 minutes later I was itching like crazy!!! All over!!! What the heck? Am I allergic all of the sudden?

I LOVE eggs. I'll be super sad if this continues

it's totally possible, unfortunately.

One of my kids ate peanut butter all through childhood and through 20s...got to be about 28 or so and started developing hives every time he had a peanut butter sandwich. Thought it maybe was the wheat bread. Switched to oat bread....still broke out.

A cousin developed overnight life-threatening peanut reaction too...and she also had previously done fine eating peanuts...now she has to carry epi pen, and cant even be in same room with people eating peanuts.

Happened to me. Can't eat more than one egg in a day now. I used to make a lot of egg salad, used to be one of my lc staples, but once I started having bad reactions to eggs I switched to making chicken salad as a staple. Sorry to hear you seem sensitive to eggs, too.

Thanks guys. I'm thinking it was the eggs as that was all I had to eat, up until the point I started having hives and itching like a mother. It's been 8hrs since I ate them and I'm STILL itching!!! Ugh. Not cool. I just took some benadryl...hope it helps

In my late thirties, I suddenly found I couldn't eat walnuts; which I used to eat with abandon. I ate them one day and my tongue swelled up, the back of my throat itched like crazy. It was frightening.

You'd be surprised how many foods have walnuts in them, too! Especially when you're not lowcarbing; they are a common element in baked goods.

I wonder if eating free range farm fresh eggs would make any difference over the store bought ones.

I worry about this, too, as it happened to a friend of mine. She is now very sensitive to eggs. I typically don't eat more than 2 per day, but I LOVE eggs, and will be very sad if I ever develop a reaction.

It's truly horrible! I'm still a little itchy and it's been well over 12hrs since I ate an actual egg. Now I'm pretty scared to eat another egg... I don't want to find out the hard way. I can only assume it was the eggs as they were the only thing I had to eat. I can't afford to get allergy testing, so I guess I will avoid eggs and try to stay away from products that contain them

It might be a good idea to get tested so that you know for sure.
I don't know if they test for egg allergies.
One time when I was a kid I broke out while eating walnuts. At first
we thought it was the walnuts but it turned out to be a reaction to a pesticide that had been sprayed right where I was sitting.

I think you could do a bit of a self-test for this if you wanted to. The idea is to abstain from the suspected food for a period (say 30 days), then eat the food and see if you get a reaction.

Google "food elimination and challenge" for various protocols.

Good luck! Eggs are so cheap and LC-friendly - it's a bummer if you're allergic to them.

(p.s. If you are allergic, make sure to say this before you get any vaccinations - some vaccines are delivered in a solution that includes eggs.)

This.

Also, I have a lot of allergies, but thankfully not to eggs. However, it's true that if you eat too much of something, your body can develop an allergy to it. That's why I've been told to not eat the same things every single day and why some people use a "rotation diet". It's where you don't eat the same things every day, but on the fourth day you can have it again.

But honestly, if I were you, I'd avoid eggs for a while and then try one. If you have a reaction, then you'll know.

I'm going to avoid eggs for a couple of weeks, and then I will eat one and see what happens. Thanks for all the advice.

I've read that it's certain proteins in the egg whites and egg yolks that causes the immune system over-reaction. Now, some people can be more allergic to different parts of the egg (whites vs yolks) but it's pretty difficult to completely seperate the two. If it is an allergy to eggs, it's best just to avoid them- you can try an elimination diet of sorts...unfortunately eggs are in a lot of products so definitely read ingredient labels to do this... And after going egg-free for a couple weeks, try an egg and if you have the same reaction then you know you are sensitive to them. I did that with wheat products and discovered I'm very sensitive to wheat- especially whole wheat flour- felt soooo much better overall joint-pain wise and chronic headaches and skin itchiness when I stopped eating gluten and wheat products... I'd wished I'd did an elimination diet sooner.

Hope this helps...

Also, it might not be an allergy. It may just be a temporary sensitive to them. I'd just avoid them for a month and then do the self-test as Leeloo suggested.
