Why am I retaining so much water?

I've been at low carb for a long time with 2 pregnancies in between that slowed me down.

I've gotten back to basically my lowest weight ever since the birth of my first son and have become stuck, stuck at the same weight (bouncing around about 6 pounds or so) for 4 to even 6 months. I cannot seem to get it to reduce.

The strange part is during this time I'm down about a 1/2 size (*going from a tight 16 to a well fitting 16 with any brand) and some shirts that did not fit me now do. The problem is I have a MASSIVE belly that jiggles constantly and I cannot for the life of me get rid of it. FYI this is not vanity my stomach has actually gotten bigger as the month has progressed from being fairly flat to large and very floppy.

I assume its water weight because for the last week I have been doing a M/E fast for a couple days followed by just an egg fast even cutting out all dairy (no HWC either) and have lost NOTHING. No weight. I've tracked every bite, kept the calories from 1350 to 1550 and drank over 100 oz of water a day. Can anyone help explain what might be going on. I'm so frustrated.

P.S. I do drink diet soda in excess sometimes and alternate that with crystal light at 1/4 strength but I have had it in the past and it hasn't slowed my weight. Also the 100 oz of water is in excess of the soda and the more I drink the more I weight in the morning. (Egg fast and 140 oz of water put me up 2 pounds this morning)

do you use a lot of salt, or salty seasoning mixes or sauces?
And you probably don't want to hear it, but ditch the soda & crystal lite for a couple of weeks to see what happens. I know you've had no issues with it in the past, but believe me, our systems change constantly as we age (and having kids can really upset the metabolic applecart!) What worked before will not necessarily work now.

I have had a pattern of too much soda...and every time I've done atkins in the past few years, I lose a bunch right away on induction...and then stall out for weeks with no weight loss.

This year, I started induction in March. Same old pattern-lost a bunch in first week, and then nothing after day 8. About 3 weeks ago, I ditched the diet pepsi (was drinking several cans a day) and went to just coffee and lots of water (120
+ ounces a day, plain water.)

I started losing again.

It's worth a try.

Some people find that a particular artificial sweetener makes them retain water. I can't touch xylitol, it makes me retain, others can't use splenda. I agree with the above poster, stop the soda and see what happens.

You guys are killing me today but you're right. I will try to drop the soda and see how that goes. I'm down to eggs and soda so I can't drop too much more but hopefully something will let loose soon.

Another one who can't have splenda!

One 4c drink stalls me for a WEEK!

Hi Elise,

I agree with others re: sweeteners. I used to drink a lot of crystal light but it was a huge staller for me.

One other thing - and this may be a bit extreme - have you considered having allergy testing done? I was insanely frustrated by not losing over several months and had allergy testing done for an unrelated issue and it turns out I am allergic to eggs I was super sad as I love eggs but since I've stopped eating them, I have started losing again.

Have you ever had your thyroid levels checked?

Water retention and inability to lose weight are both hypothyroid symptoms.

If I eat too much meat, I can get so backed up that my belly protrudes and that is in addition to the water retention.

I have the same water weight problem. I gain water weight about 8 days before TOM and hang onto it for a little over two weeks. By the time all is said and done I lose weight for two weeks or less a moth it seems. It is SO frustrating when I am so strict (meat and eggs) and all I want is To go down! I also drink no diet soda or crystal light etc only water and coffee with heavy whipping cream

How can you tell what's water weight and what's "real" weight?

For me, if my hands, feet, and ankles are puffy and swollen, I know that I am retaining water. Many women also get puffy and bloated in the abdominal area around their periods - but since my tummy has always been rounded, I can't say for sure if that happens to me .

The reason I think it is water weight is because I am technically fitting into smaller pants with no weight loss. I do exercise but not hardcore enough to claim it's muscle. Also while the rest of me is getting smaller my abdomen is actually beginning to stick out in a pronounced way (like during TOM but no where near that time).

I had thought at first it might be too much protein which is why I did the egg fast in the beginning but that doesn't seem to be causing the stall since I am gaining more since I got rid of the meat.

I haven't check my thyroid yet but I guess that will have to be the next thing on my docket.

Yup. Even my toes get puffy when I retain water! I hate that in the summer time when I want to wear cute sandals and have puffy toes.
