dormitory-style housing
So I am staying for 2 weeks (less weekends) in dormitory style housing. Everyone seems to be on the same schedule, so we all end up cooking/eating at the same time. This other guy is a cyclist. I am feeling very self-conscious about my eating... this guy was trying to talk to me while I was cooking an omelet with lots of cheese in it and I was afraid he would be disgusted by what I was making. I said nothing and figured if he was going to say anything, he would have and I would then have to defend myself... It's just difficult feeling like the "outsider," the one who can't have pizza or spaghetti... while everyone else here is eating tons of pasta and pizza all the time, and yet *I* am the weird one!

You don't in any way HAVE to defend yourself.

If the cyclist guy didn't say anything, that just shows he has good manners!
You're probably a lot more aware of your food choices than anyone else. Other people mostly just think about themselves - we're all the stars of our own movie, and the protagonists of our own story. I think that a lot of the time that we are feeling self-conscious, it's a total projection. Rose1 gave you some great comebacks, though - I'm going to try to remember those for if anyone ever comments negatively on my food choices. |

LEAD BY EXAMPLE!
besides, HEWMONS do not live by pizza and pasta alone. Eventually, they might lust after what u are eating, for no other reason than variety. Frankly, I love the expression on peoples faces at restaurants, when i DE-CARB my eats. Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI

Sounds to me like your fear of what others may think is greater than any criticism they have actually made.
I think it's a bit normal for us to feel defensive because the rest of the world believes the conventional wisdom that fat is bad and carbs--especially grains--are good for you. We know better, but it's impossible to get the truth of the matter across to others. So we hide out. I have a stick of butter in the office fridge wrapped in parchment paper and disguised as cheese so the other people in my office can't say "oh look, the fat person puts butter on her food" (and in my tea when they aren't looking) . In your case, I have a feeling your concern is motivated by a fear that fellow athletes will think you're not serious about your sport if you eat things considered by the mainstream to be unhealthy. I understand how this feels but you need to recognize that this feeling comes from you and not from other people. How you CHOOSE to deal with it is up to you. You can be experimental--if this WOE works for you, you know their perceptions are wrong, or you can learn to be confident in your well-reasoned and researched decisions, OR, you can let fear of other's perceptions derail you from this path and follow the herd back to a carb filled diet. The other thing I hear in your post is a bit of feeling sorry for yourself because you aren't eating pasta and pizza. Keep in mind that nobody is making you do this, it's a choice you are making for your health, and you have to answer to yourself, not someone else for your choices in what you eat. You can CHOOSE to see it as a very positive thing for your health or you can CHOOSE feel sorry for your deprivation. It's all up to you and how you CHOOSE to look at it. |

Fortunately, I don't think anyone here would say anything to me about my eating, it is all in my head... I just wish it weren't!
I am also not able to get the foods I normally would buy. The only grocery store near here is pretty far away and they had put away all of the meats to clean the store by the time I got there the other evening. I cannot shop during the day and I am working insane hours. I will be back in Poughkeepsie this weekend, so I can better prepare there, but for now I am eating foods I kind of don't like at all just to stay on plan and it's making my mind wander and think thoughts like, "it's just one day..." but I just got down to my lowest weight yet and I really don't want to go off plan because of convenience. I also miss eating foods I *enjoy*. This place kind of sucks and I WANNA GO HOME!!! Plus, there are GREAT mountain bike trails right here, but my bike is broken and the shop was supposed to have it fixed, but they didn't. So I have no mountain bike, just a road bike, and I'm scared to ride the roads here--lots of traffic. |
