The Problem with Surface Area

So let's say you've got a lot of weight to lose. And let's say you've only lost 5lbs of your total and you're discouraged.

this lady is holding a model of what 5lbs of fat looks like. THAT LOOKS LIKE A NEWBORN BABY.

The problem with your overall image of yourself is your Surface Area (the total amount of space your entire body takes up with every surface of your skin) When you lose, you're losing all over, and smaller amounts are harder to see. A cup of water looks better in the cup than it does spread all over the counter. Surface Area yo.

But never fear! You are losing a significant amount. Just look at the pic above. 5lbs looks pretty big. When you bring it all in to one big grouping, you get a better picture of the great work you've done.

party on!

Thank you, roamer. I am feeling VERY discouraged at my slow loss today, but every pound I lose looks like that little chunk on the table behind her, and every 5 lbs is that thing in her hand. It does put it into perspective!

To be more precise, adipose tissue weight 0.9kg per litre.
So a litre bottle of finest body fat weighs two lbs.

Exactly, I'd just like to add: Ampersand, sprocket and visimilitude.

I've been VIVIDLY imagining it, of late! (80 lbs total gone was my start-goal. Less than that remaining.)

My guideline is a box of butter as a close approximation of 1 lb. fat.
Next time you're at the store try to hold 10 of them at once--it's not a trivial volume!

Wow! This is great!!! It's hard for me to even picture what my 36 pounds lost looks like! But, I started out in size 18 jeans and just bought my first size 10 jeans in the same brand, which fit comfortably! (U.S. sizing. Size 10 ain't what it used to be, but still! I'm much, much thinner!!!)

Thanks for sharing this!!!

So if I imagine that for every 5 lbs I lose = a new baby, then by the time I've lost 120 lbs, I'll have 24 babies...try not to be jealous, Duggers! (Of the TV show, "19 Kids and Counting.")

By the way, right now, I have me a set of twins! ...with another on the way!

Great post! I needed a good laugh.

I do this except I use #10 and #5 bags of potatoes whenever I start feeling like I haven't accomplished anything. Seriously, 25lbs of potatoes is a lot to carry all at once.
