Low Carb and Alcohol

I wanted to get your input and experiences on this. It seems to me that drinking while on low carb has its own type of affect.

On low carb I usually drink bacardi and diet coke. I find that if I consume a considerable amount of it, the next day I experience something beyond a normal hangover. I attribute this to the combined diuretic affect of the low carb diet, the alcohol and the caffeine.. together they seem to create a lethal diuretic combination and unprecedented suffering if one overindulges. Thoughts anyone?

i have the same type of reaction when i drink too much..after a binge ill show at least a 5 lb loss and then i cant drink enough water over the next two days. from my understanding alcohol is first in the totem of burning and i definitely feel it.. its like i start from the beginning again. feel like total crap for three days. but i will say this.. before low carb i could drink a half bottle of pinnacle - the big one - and barely have a buzz. on lc, i can have 2 mixed drinks and i'm done for. no clue why it happens, but i feel your pain.

Binges

Right. Sometimes after binges I have trouble sleeping and generally feel awful for at least a day. It's really starting to seem not worth it. I think it also does something hormonally, since a large part of the suffering seems mental/emotional.

I was never a big drinker, but now alcohol seems somewhat more potent. (2 glasses of red wine has me acting silly and I'm 6'4").

Fortunately no hangover (or stalling) yet.

Yup. Low carbing makes one a cheap drunk.

Hi there, Anyone know about having wine on VLCD? It was suggested to me to only drink Grey Goose with seltzer, but I hate it. Would 2 glasses of Red wine kick me out of ketosis?
I have also heard there are decent "low carb" wines out there. Anyone hear this? I just like to have a drink or two on the weekend, and would love some suggestions.
Thanks, Cindy

I find the mental/emotional hangover after a few drinks AWFUL when following a VLC diet. It's really not worth it to me anymore. It seems to take days for me to feel myself again

I lost 30 lbs. over 3 years and never gave up my two glasses of Merlot. Of course, that is a long time to only lose 30 lbs. I never checked to see if I was in ketosis.

Yup, same here.. especially if I end up binging - the buzz is great but the next day isn't even worth it. I guess I'm not the only one.

Before low carb I never drank I was to busy eating. Now I enjoy a drink now and then. I'll drink vodka and sf orange drink or a glass of white zinfandel or a wine cooler with diet squirt. I haven't found a red wine I can drink because I get migraines from them. I'm much more sensitive to alcohol but I've never had a hangover.

Drinking alcohol does not cause to stop being in ketosis.

However, the body preferentially processes the alcohol, so your weight lose/diet is suspended until you are done processing the alcohol. Obviously the more you drink, the more time to process.

Drinking is a no-no during Atkins induction.

After that you need to decide on how often you want to pause your diet.

As a comment, most people LCing appear to be cheap drunks. No idea why that is the case.

Yes I can have a hangover feeling after only one glass of wine. I also have noticed one glass of wine is about all I can drink. Tolerance is much lower, not a bad thing.

I love clear rum and club soda, with a squirt of lemon or lime, but it totally stalls my weight loss. Doesn't help that I can't just have one. I have to avoid drinking alltogether. I find that I am "puffier" after drinking. I'd rather have nothing...

yes!

I get drunker faster and it leads me to the dark side--eating carbs! I don't feel the need to drink often, but when I'm in the company of my relatives and/or strangers, I definitely need something to take the edge off. I wonder if marijuana would be a better "low carb" option if it were legal ?

Yup.
If I'm going to a function with drinks and snacks everywhere, I pocket a piece of gum and chew it immediately after the drink so all the chips and crackers force me to picture crumby gum mouth and lose their appeal.

to me drinking and low carb just don't mix, when I get really wasted, I raid the ref and EAT anything everything onsite!!! I since stopped this habit cuz it's really crazy what it does to me emotionally (depression hits for a at least 3 days ) withdrawing from alcohol

These days whenever I want to indugle I will have one Vodka maritni, straight up , two tops.. no hangover , no guilt .. zero carbs.

cheers!!

I bowl every Friday and went to Diet Coke and Jack since I'm back on the low carb wagon. And since I don't have a working scale at home, I'm not really quite sure of what it does. And I must be odd, I had 5 last Friday and felt fine the next day, no hang over, no munchies, nothing!

Hey Cindy,

When I'm low carbing I avoid drinking as best I can but when I do drink I either do bacardi and diet coke or Mic Ultra (low carb berr). Funny thing, I always have a loss the next day and it lasts. I've never heard of any low carb wines. I would love to have that as an option though.

As far as the hangover situation, I've never had one in my life. For some reason I'm one of those lucky people who can drink as much as I want and never feel bad the next day!

All red wine is low carb and lowers blood sugar. I drink Cabernet Sauvignon. I always have a loss the next day and it usually lasts too like you said. I don't drink anything but this since on low carb. Would be nice to find a low carb strawberry daiquiri recipe with spring and summer right around the corner.

I definately get drunk easier on LC, but I dont eat when buzzed/drunk... oddly I guess it takes my mind away from food. I don't drink wine and not much beer, when i drink i like vodka w/ICE zero cal/carb sparkling water, or just a nice shot of good tequila. I have had losses after a drink or two, i keep thinking it will stall me one day but hasnt, but I do wonder if I would have lost more had I not drank...

Here's one to try. Diet squirt, crushed ice, and strawberry flavored crystal light, or MIO. ADD RUM AS DESIRED.

Not sprite, diet squirt, 50/50, I can't think of another brand, but I'm sure there are more. It's like a sweet and sour pop. I did forget to post blend with blender or magic bullet ect.
