How my stall is breaking (!)

Hey All, I'm almost nervous to post this thread in case I jinx myself!

My weight loss has been stalled for the past six weeks. After doing a lot of supplement research last weekend, I bought L-acetyl carnitine + alpha lipoic acid capsules. They're said to help your mitochondria to work more efficiently. I took the first one Feb 27th and was down 1 lb the next morning. And incredibly I dropped about 1 lb on the 29th and today too. (-3.4 total) I'm in shock but so happy. Today my scale showed 299, but I'm waiting to see one more day before updating my stats.

In wonderful addition, I FINALLY understand now what it means when others on this board talk about immense energy. I now have that too! I feel really alert and vital, and have no wish for naps anymore in the daytime. I have the energy to rejoin zumba after feeling so long like I just couldn't do it.

I also understand now what appetite suppression means because mine has finally kicked in. I'm sitting here this evening struggling to think what I can eat to raise my calories for the day above 1000. Seriously, for me that is HUGE. And I'm only looking for food because I know I have to.

Ok, sorry for the long winded post. But I'm just excited! And if any of you are interested in the details, I''d be so happy to share the details of what I'm doing if you want to try for yourselves..

Yep, the re-started weight loss is undeniably awesome, but I think the most cool thing is that I'm now experiencing all of the benefits of low carbing, like the high energy and appetite suppression. It was a bummer to be following the lifestyle, but not reaping the benefits that the LC books promise, and that so many of you all here enjoy.

I guess my metabolism just needed a little push along..

That is awesome news. I have not tried the carnitine and think I may just give it a go. I have been taking a.l.a. with not results that I can determine. What else do you think you have changed about what you are eating? Thank you for sharing.

Wow..
this is very interesting.

I am going to give these supplements a try.
I posted here that I think the mitochondria supplying energy was one of my problems: Mitochondria and Being Ketone Adapted...
and remember you commenting on these sups in that thread! Very excited. thank you for sharing!..

What doses are you using Raquel? I just went out and bought some, and it contains 500mg acetyl-L carnitine and 200mg alpha lipoic acid combined in each capsule.

Ok guys, the capsules I'm using have 500 mg of l-acetyl carnitine and 150 mg of APA. I'm taking 1 capsule first thing in the morning. Through my research, I think the L-Acetyl Carnitine is better absorbed than just regular carnitine. I also take magnesium before bed, and I've read that the carnitine needs to bind to magnesium to do its job.

There are some other nutrients (B12, ribose, CoQ10, etc) that have been shown to help the carnitine to transport fat to the mitochondria for energy, but I have not tried adding any of them yet.

Please post your results here - I'm so excited to know what you find!

Cathy, I did not change anything in my eating patterns along with taking the supplements, but after taking them, I definitely am eating less just for naturally being un-hungry. I normally snack at night.. and I remember on the 29th, looking around the kitchen considering various snacks, but then realizing I was not actually hungry! So I was looking for a snack just out of habit! Unreal!!!

Thanks Ragoon! I went out to get some carntine today (GNC) only to find that it is not allowed to be sold here in Canada.

Wow, I had just placed an order for l-acetyl carnitine and alpha lipoic acid caps (though separate and not combined) earlier today not for weight loss purposes but for energy issues. I'd been reading up on mitochondrial energy and energy in general lately and decided to try this out. Hearing about your increase in energy is very encouraging and I can't wait till my order arrives!

Cathy, I forgot about Canada.. I actually have a Canadian friend with MS who takes the alcar/apa supplement and orders it online from the US. (as an aside, MS patients seem to have great success using it for energy too)

Heather, I bought mine from The Vitamin Shoppe and the brand is Source Naturals.

Vilanteira and Amgarrett - please let us know here if you feel any energy difference, ok?

This is the book review by the LC author Fran McCullough that set me out on my carnitine research:

"The Carnitine Miracle by Robert Crayhon, M.S. ... Carnitine turns out to be the missing piece in the diet world, the nutrient (which was thought to be an amino acid at one time, but isn't) that actually burns fat at the cellular level. If you don't have enough carnitine in your system, it doesn't matter how rigorously you diet, you just won't burn the fat. Add carnitine (which has no side effects) and bingo, the furnace ignites. You also gain the benefit of all that fat-burning, which is not only weight loss but a huge energy boost - in fact you need to take carnitine in the morning so it won't keep you from sleeping. ... If you've hit a plateau, if your weight loss isn't what it should be according to your dietary compliance, if your energy is low, you really should check out this book."

I took my first capsule this afternoon, but didn't feel any different (does it work immediately or does it take a while to build up in your system?) In fact, i still took a nap later in the afternoon lol.

I'll take another tomorrow morning and see if there's any difference in energy. Maybe i need a higher dose?

AmyLiz,

It may take a little more time to have an effect. For me, I took the first dose on the 27th afternoon, and my second on the 28th morning. And that's the day when I felt a change. *fingers crossed for you*

This is VERY interesting to me, as I'm one of the slowest losers on the planet! My losses are in ounces, not lbs, so maybe this will be the boost I need. Thanks!

I see that Netrition sells carnitine and l-carnitine. Any suggestions on which one to purchase?

AmyLiz & Amgarrett,

Wow, I'm *really* happy for you! Any difference in energy/appetite too?

One live and learn note: I wish I hadn't bought the alcar +ala in one capsule. I'm having trouble sleeping these days (too much darn energy? Lol) and I think it may be that the ALA dose is too high (today I read that it can cause insomnia in doses over 50mg). Now I wish I had bought them separately so I could tweak according to my experience...

So that's $24 lost to nutritional experimentation. A kind of bitter pill, but on the bright side, it put me on the right path. I love my new found energy and lack of appetite!!

Now I just need to find my correct combo!
