How Much is Too Much?

Is there such a thing as too much FAT on low-carb? Just wondering. Thanks!

Idk the answer to this, but I will say that I eat ALOT of fat. (about 70%) and I've had great results from that!

Yesterday I had 18 carbs, 1750 calories and 109 grams of fat. This afternoon I woke up to a hungry belly.

Good to know. Today I ate 1825 Calories, 20 net carbs and 137.4g FAT! That number scared me a little. Wasn't too sure if it was too much.

Too Much Fat Considerations IMO:
(1) Well I think the total number of daily calories puts up one ceiling, in that if you consume too much calories of any of the macro nutrients (including fat), then you will cause stalling and/or weight gain.
(2) In terms of % of total calories, I think Fat % should be backed into. First you determine what your carb limit is (For Example I aim for no more than 40 Carbs (160 Calories). Second you determine how much protein you should be consumming based upon your gender, activity level, and body weight (I.E. I should eat at least 1 gram of protein per pound or 165 grams (660 calories worth) or protein per day).

So if I was going to eat 2000 calories per day (a slight caloric deficit from my maintenance caloric target), after I subtract out Carbs of 40g/160kcal and protein of 165g/660kcals, that leaves me with 1180kcals of fat, which divided by 9 = 132 grams of fat approximately. So more than that would be too much, putting me at risk of stalling/gaining weight...

Last week I AVERAGED 130 g fat a day. And 15 net carbs a day. So I don't think it's too much. I also lost 4 pounds. (which I had also gained some too after
A bad weekend)

Hey Taxbane

I also think as you too many calories will stall or gain weight but reading here some of the biggest weight losers have not even counted their calories how do you explain that?

Since i'm a newbie i will let you explain that

Hi Zed,

Some people just believe that calories do not matter. Some beleive fat loss/gain is substantially drivin by hormones, and only to a lesser extent by thermodynamics (calories). Other's may or may not care about calories, but don't want to also have to count/track calories in addition to carbs for whatever reason.

IMO, I think thermodynamics plays some role, but I know endocronology plays a signifigant roll from personal experience. Moreover, I think most people will agree, that LC diet is more satiating because it contains larger proportional amounts of fat and proteins, which are digested slower, thereby producing steadier levels of insulin (protein) or not inducing in the first place (fats).

That said, I find it hard to overeat on protein and fat. Additionally, as Dr. Eades points out in Protein Power, one of his patients had stalled eventhough she was eating the proper amount of limited carbs. It turns out she was eating an entire stick of butter every night for dessert... She didn't gain, but she wasn't losing either.

I think tracking calories in addition to carbs is a good habit at first, because you become more aware of the qualities and quantitites of foods that you will be habitually consumming. I would also check ingredients too for that matter as a good habit. Once you start making substantial progress and are 4 or more months into the LC WOE, then you can probably stop tracking things (except for carbs), as long as the weight keeps comming off. Is you stall though, I would start tracking everything again to see what has changed.

Being of a "certain age" - almost golden shall I say. Unfortunately I need fewer calories and carbs. I take meds for thyroid so I know that is on track, but as muscle mass decreases and activity over all decreases I need to watch calories secondary to carbs in order to lose. I only have about 15 pounds to lose and that is a major factor too. I don't seem to gain if I have higher calorie counts, but I don't lose at all .

Not starving, not even hungry, but need to limit postions and the higher fat items.

I would love to discuss this further with anyone in my position.

Just re-read my journal from last month to see why I lost so much in Jan, but gained .5 this month. It boils down to calorie intake for me. Mostly cutting out snacking.

ETA: In *addition* to 20 or less carbs daily.

I have been thinking about this and I believe that when I am eating the right proportion of carbs, fat and protein I eventually drop weight. When the proportions are correct I feel full, sometimes very full and I just have to stop eating. I don't think I am able to eat more calories than I need.
I never think about calories.
So far it is working for me.

I think I fall into the bad habit of eating too much "volume" because of the low carb diet mentality of not having to weight or measure or count calories. I think it makes me eventually stall, then I get disheartened, and go off program. I think I need to be aware of portion sizes and maybe even calories.

I discarded the first 50 without counting calories, then I hit a brick wall and did start counting calories and portion sizes along with low carb to discard the last 40+. I maintain just counting carbs but I do have to keep my protein intake in check.
