OMG moment

Talking to a friend today whom I thought to be very close to me, weight-wise.

We are the same height and I *thought* close in size...man is my perception skewed...she told me her weight and it's almost 20 pounds less than me.

I was truly shocked!! But of course I did not let her know that. No need for both of us to end up feeling like crap.

Yes that's amazing how 2 people can look the same size but have totally different weights, same thing with sizes too, 2 people wearing the same size can have different weights. It all has to do with muscle density & bone density verses fat density.

I am pretty sure it just means I am (and look) a lot fatter than I thought. *shrug* --- oh well...hitting the gym again tomorrow. *sigh*

If you are the same volume, it means that you are denser than she is - and that's either high bone density and/or more muscle. Either way, a win.

I kind of hate to suggest this but... is it possible that she is not being totally honest about her weight? Lots of people are dishonest about their true weight, esp if they are embarrassed of it.

.. or she might not weigh herself regularly .. that said, people are shocked to hear that I weigh what I do ... not that it is a lot at all, lol! They think I look thinner than that for my height.

I attribute it to a lot working out .. muscle .. At the gym, someone recently told me that i had lost weight .. which is obviously not true. I'd actually been fluctuating up by two pounds even. I think, as dynamic pointed out, it is a body composition thing.

Mishka .. Girl I have seen those big guns of yours before when you've posted pix, lol! Do not doubt that you have the same advantage .. Please don't feel down because of something stupid like that.

I have 2 roommates. We all started working out and dieting the same week (well, we all are into fitness anyways, but we got to the program the same week, and all started our different diets).
Me: trying to lose 35lbs of pizza fat and get fit for cycling, starting weight 167; ht 5'5, female, low carb, size 10
#1: trying to lose I guess 15 lbs, starting weight: 165, 5'7, female "balanced" diet, but still drinks a lot of alcohol and eats high carb... thinks fat is evil, size 10
#2: trying to build muscle/gain weight, already has very low body fat, 155, 5'11; male

After 1 week, we weighed:
Me: 158
#1: 164
#2: 159
I won!! (just kidding :P)

#1 was so mad because I've always been a little heavier than her since we met (although we were *both* a LOT lighter back then!!!). When I used to work at a horse farm and I was a size 6, I weighed 150lbs--I lost a ton of fat, but I was soooo ripped (horses are heavy and they often want you to carry them)! I also did not eat as much pizza back then. When I was a size 4 in college, I was anorexic and had no muscle tone and I weighed 115. So, I keep telling myself, "it's got to be muscle," even though I don't always buy it! I think scales are good for me for motivation, but you have to realize that they are not really measuring what you expect them to.

You beat me to it! I gave up a long time ago comparing weights, because unless you see it on the scale for yourself, you can't be absolutely certain that the weight you are comparing to is accurate.

well, you know people carry their weight differently. especially if one woman has very large breasts and the other doesn't. it's hard to tell by looking, and it doesn't mean you look all that much larger than she, necessarily. *hug*

Thanks y'all. I had a night of beating myself up inside my head and then wrote in my journal this morning: "No more bullsh*t" I have to keep reminding myself (I'm stubborn LOL) that those things are not important...and to focus on me and what I'm doing to make sure I am well and eating clean/working out, etc... beyond that, whether she weighs that much less than me or not, in the big picture I just cannot let it matter.

Thanks for all the input...I really needed to hear some sane people.

Can also be scale she uses, time of day you both use, clothes versus nekked, b4 bm or after, and on and on. Lots of good reasons listed above too. I wouldn't worry. It is what you look and feel like that matters...not comparing a number!

haha I totally know how you feel, I ran into a similar situation this week. My sister-in-law and I are the same height and we used to share clothes all the time (size XL shirts & size 19 pants). Well I started eating LC back in November starting at a whopping 267lbs and have lost 47lbs now bringing me down to 220lbs. (size L shirts & size 15 pants) Well I just found out earlier this week that my sister-in-law got weighed at the dr's office and she's only 217lbs! (she isn't dieting) I am still 3lbs heavier (after losing all that weight!) than her and I thought that I looked similar to her!!!! Oh man, talk about carry weight in different places geeez.

It is really hard for us to remember (because we have felt 'compared' to others all our lives, and have ourselves been guilty of it) that this isn't a competition to see who can weigh the least. What a healthy weight is for you, at your height, can be very different from what is healthy for other people. So many factors go into weight...including frame size and muscle mass!

My best friend is the same height as I am. And she has been underweight all of her life (she lives on junk food too...she is just one of those people who, biologically, cannot put on weight. She was back to her pre-pregnancy weight 17 DAYS after giving birth!). I doubt she weighs more than 115 pounds (we are 5'7''). I, on the other hand, am in the 170s...talk about a difference! (lets NOT talk about the difference there was BEFORE when I weighed upwards of 250!). But I am NEVER going to be that small. Firstly, she has a TINY bone structure. She is as delicate as a bird...tiny, willowly limbs. I am built like a linebacker (yep, LARGRE bone structure, by all measurements). I am also MUSCULAR (I can leg press (currently) 390 kg.). I am athletic. I run, lift weights, etc. She does not leave the couch. And those things are going to contribute to our overall health, irrespective of our weights.

Anyhow, the point is, no matter HOW strict I diet, I'll never weight what she weighs. I am not built to. Based on calculations, my lean body mass is 126 pounds. That is if NOT including body fat. So on that basis alone, we will NEVER weigh the same!

So you can't compete with friends, as hard as that is to NOT do, in your mind. This is, ultimately, a competition we have with ourselves, to see how good we can look, compared to how we were. How healthy we can become, compared to how unhealthy we were.

I know how it feels though. But chin up, you are doing fabulously!

Spot on, Mishka!

As others have said, she could be a completely different build to you, or she could be a little on the 'flexible' side when telling you her weight (I have a couple of friends who, I'm certain, have been guilty of that!).

Just have a look back at your progress pictures - you look sensational - and celebrate how far you've come without letting negativity from external factors bother you.

And, by the way, I still want your boots from the 2010 picture !

I have a friend who is 5'8 and she is 200lbs and is a size 18. It's so weird! I am SO much shorter than her, I weigh more yet size wise she is bigger.

I know what you mean, I have a coworker who's like that, just naturally stick thin without even trying to. She was complaining about how she can't find any clothes her size and how all she sees is size 3 & 5 and how they are like so huge on her she said she wears a size zero and I believe it because she looks like she wears a size -5. Not zero, a negative 5. LOL! But she's nice and the really weird thing is that her 5yr old daughter is obese! I don't know how that can be! Not just chubby I mean really obese at 5yrs old! And she talks about how she lets her daughter eat a lot of junk food and I so want to tell her that she should not let her daughter eat like that. But it's weird because since she has a super metabolism how can her daughter be so overweight. My other coworker joked around to her saying that when her duaghter is 7yrs old she's going to be bigger than her mom. But yeah I know I will never be as thin as my coworker no matter how little I eat, I would die of starvation still weighing more than my coworker! But yeah it's all about being the best YOU, you can be and not comparing yourself to anyone else.

Yes I agree. No 5 yr old should eat a whole half gallon of ice cream by herself and all of the other things she lets the child eat.

That was me - on the worse side, lol!! I was the plus size girl wearing 28/30s when people my same weight and height were wearing smaller sized clothes .. it really made me mad at the time, lol!! Luckily I lost fat and gained a lot of muscle and am very ok with how I look now. It is all about body shape and body composition!

I think our tendency to try to compare ourselves to others is an effort to "see" ourselves. At least it is for me. I want to know what I look like and finding a full body version of someone that is my size and shape allows me to examine how I appear to others because I don't have a sense of that when I look at my own reflection in the mirror.

I know I take up less space - I can see it when I sit in a chair and can actually see the edges of the seat instead of my hips and thighs hanging over the edges. But how that translates in the full picture of what I look like - that's what I have difficulty with and I really want to see it. Finding a body double that I could examine from all angles would be ideal - hence my constant internal comparison to other women.

Yes I think that's what we all do even if we are not consciously aware of it.
