BEST FOODS....HELLMAN'S MAYO QUESTION!

Hi guys! It's been a few years since I have been on "the board" and I'm gearing up to coming back. I intend to stay sugar free and in the past didn't care about the sugar in Oscar Meyer bacon or in my Bet Foods mayo. Do you concern yourselves with that?

Hi

I couldn't do without my mayo, I would never be able to follow the plan without a good dollop on most meals. I do count the carbs though so it is a concious choice of mine to use some of my carb allowance on mayo.

The sugar in mayo doesn't concern me but the soybean oil sure does. I used to be a mayo junkie but then I finally listened to what Fawn has been saying all these years about excess omega-6 fatty acids and stopped eating it along with nearly all salad dressings too. And I'm glad I did!

Hellman's (or its supermarket brand equivalent)have never been a problem.

there is a neglible quantity per portion. However, i do not abuse the privilege.I do not cook bacon, but get it on my cheeseburgers or along with an omelet. I am sure i average less than 4 oz a week, if that much. The same with coffee. Best of luck, and happy TG! Love & Profits: FLATFERENGHI

I use Hellman's mayo and have been successful. It's a big part of my way of eating.

I love mayo and used to go through a quart jar every other week but I find I eat a lot less since going low carb because I no longer eat the bread, muffins and bagels I used to slather it on. Now, I just use it in my salads or as a condiment when I'm having beef or pork.

I didn'tthink it would matter until I ate a huge amount one day and got out of ketosis - so I found some sugar free mayonaise at trader joe's - haven't tasted it yet though.

I don't use enough mayo that it makes a huge difference - I add maybe 2 teaspoons to a can of tuna, for instance. I use the Costco brand and I only checked the carb count. When I make a recipe that requires a lot of mayo, I'll sometimes use half mayo and half sour cream to lower the calorie count (I need to count calories as well as carbs).

I buy Duke's when I can find it because it doesn't have sugar. Usually I can't find it so I buy Hellman's. The amount of sugar is so small so i don't let it bother me.

For anyone in the NC, SC, TN area - look for JFG Mayo - its the only brand i've ever found that has eggs as the second ingredient (every other brand is water) - the taste is incredible - and it also has no sugar. Everytime I'm in that area, I bring it home by the case.

What has Fawn said about excess omega-6 fatty acids? Why are you concerned about soybean oil?

I use a T mayo w/burgers/deviled eggs/tuna/mock potato salad to name a few.

I use Kraft or JFG, whichever has the best sale.

Kraft's label lists, 0 sugar, 0 carbs, soybean oil, water, eggs, egg yolks, vinegar, contains less than 2% sugar, etc ingredients listed.

JFG lists, 0 carbs, 0 sugars, soybean oil, egg yolks, distilled vinegar water listed, sugar is listed after water with no %. It also has mustard flour listed. Whatever that is

What did fawn say about soybean oil? Is there a mayo that is 'healthier' then the others??

I use Duke's but to be honest, it is mainly because it is my favorite. I also love the fact it doesn't contain any sugar. I too try to contain the amount as it is an item I can easily over do.

Yes, Duke's is free of sugar, but I have to agree on the soy oil. Homemade mayo is about the easiest thing to make, to every Sunday I make a batch for the week. That way I know FOR SURE what's in it.

I like Walnut oil. I have also used Grapeseed, Flax, and Olive Oil.

The Flax was

And I didn't care for the stronger taste of Olive Oil either. Walnut and/or Grapeseed oil are nice and light.

I just drop an egg into the blender and turn it on, then a bit of lemon juice or vinegar, then VERY slowly drizzle in 1 Cup oil. It will emulsify in mayo. Then season it with salt, pepper, ground mustard, garlic powder, or whatever you want.

There are more complicated recipes on here, but I keep it simple.

I tried different oils and never liked the results. Now, i just use extra, extra light virgin olive and this works works fine for me.

Make sure your eggs are room temperature. 1 whole and 1 yolk, pinch of salt, tsp of Dijon mustard, 1T to 1 1/2 T of lemon juice, 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar and 3/4 c-1c of oil. I also add in 1T of whey to make the mayo last a long time in the fridge. If I use whey I leave the jar on the counter for 7-10 hrs and then refrigerate.

I drop everything in a narrow jar(a Ball canning jar) that fits closely to my stick hand blender. I start the blender at the bottom. Hold for a minute or so and slowly lift up and hold at every pull for a few seconds. Done in less than 2 minutes and it's already in the jar for storage. Easy!
